Chapter 11
TYLER
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of another eventful day at Adamson High School, I made my way to Miles' locker, accompanied by the mischievous twins, Klaus and Clark. We had become inseparable ever since we formed a close-knit group in middle school, bonding over shared interests and a love for soccer.
Tomorrow marked the finals of the prestigious interschool soccer competition we had been participating in for months. Our team, the Adamson Tigers, had made it to the ultimate showdown after countless hours of relentless practice and unwavering determination. Excitement surged through my veins as I considered the possibility of inviting Miles to watch the game and share in our final triumph.
As I approached Miles' locker, the mischievous twins exchanged playful smirks. Klaus, with his dark hair and a mischievous glint in his blue eyes, nudged me teasingly. "So, are you finally going to ask him?"
I rolled my eyes, feigning nonchalance. "Asking someone to watch a soccer game shouldn't be such a big deal, Klaus. Besides, Miles is one of our friends now. Of course, he'll want to be there."
Suddenly, Clark nudged me with his elbow, causing me to wince. He pointed discreetly in a direction, his eyes gleaming mischievously. It was Jessica, "Hey, your girlfriend is here!" he whispered, a smirk playing on his lips.
I shot Clark an irritated glance, attempting to mask my embarrassment. "I told you she's not my girlfriend!" I hissed back, my voice laced with frustration.
"Oops, my bad, sorry!" He hissed, making the peace sign.
"Hey there, cutie, how's your class?" she greeted me sweetly, her voice brimming with warmth. She planted herself beside me, wrapping her arms around me in a tight hug. Her words were friendly enough, but her actions often blurred the line between friendship and something more. She would often hug me a little longer than necessary or make playful comments that made me uncomfortable. I had tried dropping hints and avoiding close physical contact, but it seemed that she either didn't notice or didn't want to understand.
This time, however, I decided to make my concerns clear. As she approached to kiss me on the cheek, I swiftly turned my head, denying her the gesture. It was never my intention to hurt her feelings, but I couldn't continue allowing her to cross boundaries I had voiced before.
"Please don't do that again, Jessica; I don't like it," I said firmly, hoping she would understand.
"Fine," she replied, her voice tinged with annoyance. "Tomorrow will be the finals of the soccer competition, right? And I heard you'll be throwing a party after the game?" She added, her eyes fixed on mine, expecting a confirmation.
I smiled and nodded, trying to suppress my excitement. A smile gradually formed on Jessica's face, replacing her previous irritation. The news had ignited a spark of enthusiasm within her.
"Let's go girls! We still have time to master our cheerleading stunts for tomorrow's competition!" Jessica exclaimed a gleam of determination in her eyes. The girls nodded in agreement, their spirits uplifted by Jessica's unwavering enthusiasm. As they started walking away from us, the sound of giggling caught my attention. She turned to face me again with a mischievous grin, and she blew me a flying kiss, accompanied by a playful wink as her squad laughed. But the sight alone made me queasy and sent chills down my spine.
I'm sorry Jessica but I already have someone I like.
"That was utterly gross," said a familiar voice from behind us, so the three of us immediately turned to see who it was. As we pivoted, our eyes widened in surprise at the sight before us. Standing there, with a disgusted look on her face, was Erin.
"Erin, hi!" Clark stammered, his voice betraying his nervousness, while Klaus stood beside him, unsuccessfully covering up his laughter. Erin simply smiled at Clark, her eyes sparkling with warmth.
"Are you guys waiting for Miles?" Erin asked, a touch of curiosity in her eyes.
"Yeah, we are," I replied to her then she grinned.
"Oh, don't bother waiting for him; he won't be coming here today. He went straight to the dandelion field just behind our school, alone," Erin said, so I gave her a puzzled look.
"Wait, why would he go to the dandelion field? Alone?" I asked. Erin shrugged, her eyes fixed on something in the distance.
"Beats me," she replied absentmindedly. "But the only thing he told me was that when he needed some time alone or when his secret admirer gave him a new piano sheet and he had to figure it out alone, for some reason he felt the dandelion field was the best place to do that," she informed us.
"A piano sheet? From his secret admirer?" Klaus asked in surprise.
Erin nodded, a glimmer of excitement flickering in her eyes. "Yes, ever since we were in middle school. Every Monday, like clockwork, a new piano sheet mysteriously appears in Miles' locker. It's like someone out there is trying to get his attention."
"So, you're saying this has been going on for years now?" Clark asked, adjusting the strap of his backpack on his shoulder. Erin and Charles just nodded in response.
"Do you think it's a prank?" Klaus pondered aloud, his voice laced with skepticism.
Erin shook her head. "No, I don't think so. The sheets are meticulously organized, and they're not just random songs. They're pieces that Miles loves to play. Someone out there must truly care about him."
"We also wonder who it could be," Charles mused, his eyes scanning the crowd of students bustling to their next classes.
Erin sighed, a hint of longing in her voice. "I wish we could just ask Miles. But he seems so clueless about it all. Sometimes I wonder if he even appreciates those gifts."
"Seems like you have a rival, perhaps a love triangle?" Klaus whispered as he leaned closer to me. His voice carried a hint of mischief as he observed my confusion and curiosity.
"Is Miles interested in getting to know this stranger?" I asked them, my voice trailing off with a hint of uncertainty. I could sense a flicker of surprise dancing across their faces, their eyes widening ever so slightly. Then Charles, with a mischievous grin stretching across his face, straightened his back and chuckled softly. The smirk he wore seemed to suggest that he had caught onto something, suspecting me of an ulterior motive.
"Nope, because Miles only likes one person, and he's obsessed with HIM," Charles said proudly, emphasizing the word while looking me straight in the eyes.
I heard Klaus chuckle, so I looked at him. The moment he caught me glaring at him, he immediately stopped laughing and avoided his gaze at me, but there was still a trace on his face that he was holding back laughter.
I couldn't help but feel a pang of curiosity ignite within me. Charles's words hung in the air, teasing my inquisitive nature. Who was this person that Miles was supposedly obsessed with?
"Anyway, we should get going now. If you need anything from Miles, you can just go after him; he won't mind at all. Bye now!" Erin said with a smile, dragging Charles away from us.
"See you tomorrow, guys!" Charles said, waving his hand at us, and I waved back.
"So are we going to talk to Miles?" Clark asked suddenly, but I shook my head in response.
"Nope, I will talk to him alone. You can just go ahead," I said, and they both nodded.
"Okay, we'll go ahead first, but make sure you go home right away and have a good and proper rest because we still have a game tomorrow," Klaus said, so I nodded and waved at them before we went our separate ways.
I quickly walked to the dandelion field just behind the school. As I approached the field, a gentle breeze caressed my face, carrying with it the sweet scent of dew-kissed grass and blooming flowers.
When I arrived, I was amazed at how beautiful the view was. It was as if nature had painted the landscape with its delicate brushstrokes. The dandelions stood tall and proud, their vibrant yellow petals shining like the sun. It was a field of wishes, where dreams were whispered and carried away by the wind.
With each step I took, the dandelions seemed to come alive, their feathery heads swaying in a synchronized rhythm. It was almost as if they were dancing, gracefully moving to an invisible melody only they could hear. I couldn't help but stand there, mesmerized by the spectacle before me.
Suddenly, someone caught my attention, I watched as Miles stood in the middle of the dandelion field, his average figure casting a long shadow on the ground. The soft breeze tousled his hair as he tilted his head toward the sun, shutting his eyes to soak in its warmth. His face was bathed in the gentle golden hue of the setting sun, giving him an ethereal glow.
There was something about Miles that always captivated an enigmatic aura that drew people in. His presence had a way of brightening up any room, or, in this case, a dandelion field. It was as if he possessed a secret connection with nature, understanding its rhythm and being in harmony with its essence.
Opening his eyes, Miles spotted a lone dandelion standing tall amidst a sea of feathery white heads. A smile formed on his lips as he plucked the delicate flower from the ground. Holding it gently between his fingers, he admired its seemingly fragile beauty. With a soft breath, he sent the dandelion's tiny seeds floating into the air.
As the seeds drifted away on the currents, carried by the wind to unknown destinations, Miles' eyes followed them with a wistful gaze. His heart seemed to merge with the fleeting white specks as if he were sharing a piece of himself with the world. It was as though he recognized the ephemeral nature of life, embracing its transience rather than lamenting it.
I stepped closer, fascinated by the poignant scene unfolding before me. Miles glanced at me with a surprised expression on his face.
MILES
Opening my eyes, I spotted a lone dandelion standing tall amidst a sea of feathery white heads. A smile formed on my lips as I plucked the delicate flower from the ground. Holding it gently between my fingers, I admired its seemingly fragile beauty.
"I wished you'd be mine someday, Ty," I whispered, then, with a soft breath, I sent the dandelion's tiny seeds floating into the air.
Every time I have free time to be alone, I always come to this dandelion field by myself. This place is like my comfort zone; it helps me calm down and forget the bad events in my life. Sometimes, I just come here to make a wish, like what I did just now.
Underneath a bright blue sky, I found solace amidst the countless fluffy dandelion heads swaying in the gentle breeze. Their delicate seeds seemed to carry the weight of my worries, whisked away with every breath of wind. It was in this moment of serenity that I made my wish.
As I was about to sit on the grass when someone caught my eye. A familiar figure of a man emerged from a distance, steadily making his way towards me. Recognizing the familiar face, I stood up straighter, a mix of surprise and curiosity filling me. It was Tyler. And he was heading straight for me, a gentle smile on his face and his hands comfortably tucked into his pockets.
"Your friends told me I'd find you here; I never knew you were into this kind of place," he said with a playful tone, his laughter echoing through the air.
I chuckled, my laughter echoing through the tranquil dandelion field. "Yeah, because I find solace in this enchanting and mesmerizing place," I said as we sat down on the soft carpet of dandelions.
"I like it here," Tyler simply replied, which made me glance at him. Curiosity piqued, I observed as Tyler plucked a dandelion from the ground and held it delicately in his hands. He stared at it intently, as if lost in thought. With a gentle smile on his lips, he blew softly, sending the tiny seeds floating into the air. The dandelion seeds danced and swayed in the breeze, carried away to destinations unknown. As I watched their graceful flight, I couldn't help but wonder what had captivated Tyler's interest.
"Did you make a wish too?" I asked him with a hint of curiosity in my voice. He turned his gaze at me with a smile.
"I did," he calmly replied.
We both stared into each other's eyes for a moment. The air crackled with anticipation as a mix of emotions swirled between us. The silence stretched, becoming almost unbearable, and I felt compelled to break it.
"By the way, why were you looking for me, Ty?" I asked, hoping to get rid of the weighty stillness that hung between us.
"Oh yeah, about that," he stammered, "tomorrow will be the final of the interschool soccer competition, so I was thinking of inviting you to watch my game?"
My heart skipped a beat as I looked into Tyler's eyes. I had always admired his passion for soccer and the way he effortlessly dominated the field. Being invited to watch his final match meant everything to me. Even though I never missed his every game, It is still an opportunity to see him in action and show my support. Trying to appear nonchalant, I replied with a hint of excitement, "Sure, Ty, I'd love to come."
"Why did you ask me to come and watch your game anyway?" I asked him jokingly, and he shook his head, chuckling.
"Okay, I'll be honest with you," Tyler began. "I'm used to you watching me play, Miles. You've been watching me play since the day I joined the team, and since then, you've been there for every game I've had, watching me from a distance." I listened intently, my heart pounding with a mix of confusion and curiosity.
He is right; I have watched all his games live. I was there every game to watch him play and support him as well, but what I didn't think was that he noticed my presence. All this time, I thought he never noticed me, but I was wrong.
"Your presence gives me confidence and strength to play harder and win the game; It's like I didn't want to disappoint you, Miles." After he said those words, a moment of silence broke the tension between the two of us. I can't believe what I just heard.
"And not just that, I'll be throwing a party tomorrow night, and I wanted you to come with me," he added.
"Are you inviting me to your party, Ty?" I asked for a confirmation.
"Yes, Miles, I am." He simply replied.
No one in my entire life had ever invited me to a party. Being an outcast for being gay, I had grown accustomed to feeling excluded from social gatherings. The sting of rejection had become a familiar pain. So, when I received an unexpected invitation from Tyler, confusion washed over me. It felt like a cruel joke, one that would surely end in humiliation. After all, why would anyone want a freak like me to be there?
I avoided looking at him because I didn't know what to say. The weight of unresolved emotions hung heavily between us, creating an invisible barrier. "Hey." He called me in his most gentle voice. Something within me compelled me to glance over my shoulder, locking eyes with him hesitantly.
"But what about your friends?" I asked with a hint of concern in my voice, but he just smiled at me.
"They will be glad to see you, Miles; trust me," he said with assurance.
It took me a moment before I spoke again, "Okay, I'll go."
Tyler's smile widened. "Then I'll pick you up at eight," he said.
"You'll pick me up?"
"Gladly."
Tyler and I continued to sit in a field of vibrant wildflowers, basking in the golden rays of the afternoon sun. The gentle breeze played with our hair as we shared laughter and stories, creating a rare bond that seemed to transcend time.
As the conversation flowed effortlessly, our jests and cliché jokes filled the air, only accentuating the genuine joy we found in each other's company. With every dig and tease, our laughter grew louder, resonating with the spirit of youth.
Tyler's contagious grin was infectious as he spun tales of his wild adventures, transporting us to distant lands and exciting escapades. His eyes twinkled with mischief, and his animated gestures illuminated the conversation. It was easy to forget about the worries and constraints of everyday life, momentarily lost in the shared bliss of our connection.
Amidst the lighthearted banter, we stumbled upon deeper conversations that unraveled hidden layers within our souls. We delved into our dreams, passions, and fears, finding solace in the comfort of vulnerability. In this tranquil setting, we discovered that our journeys had mirrored each other's, though we had been unaware until now. Time became inconsequential, stretching out on this carpet of possibilities. The enigmatic field embraced our conversations, cherishing the genuine bonds being forged. It was as if the universe conspired to bring us together, granting us this sanctuary to explore the depths of our minds and hearts.
As the sun began its descent, splashing warm hues across the vast canvas of the sky, we reluctantly acknowledged that our time in the field of wishes had to come to an end. Though we had only just scratched the surface of our friendship, we sensed that our conversation had sown the seeds of a lifelong connection.
With promises to meet again in this enchanted field, we bid farewell, carrying with us the memories and laughter that had blossomed within those hallowed grounds.Download Novelah App
