After hours Daniel reported back saying, his mother was never sick and that when she got to their house no one was there, they have already moved. Mia felt the ground beneath her shake. "What…?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her father crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "You heard him. Alex lied to you, took your money, and vanished." Mia shook her head in disbelief. "No… that can’t be true. There must be some mistake!" Daniel handed her his phone. "See for yourself." With trembling hands, Mia scrolled through the pictures. Alex’s house was empty—no furniture, no sign of his family. The neighbors had said they left the night before, and no one knew where they went. Tears welled up in her eyes. "No… he wouldn’t do this to me." Her father sighed. "He did do this to you, Mia. I warned you, but you didn’t listen." Mia felt her heart shatter into pieces. The person she had trusted, the one she had loved, had betrayed her in the worst way possible. Her hands clenched into fists. "I have to find him." Her father’s gaze hardened. "No. You’ll let him go. You will not chase after someone who used you." Mia looked up at him, pain and anger flashing in her eyes. "It was my money! I deserve to know why!" Her father exhaled sharply. "And if you find him? What then? He won’t give the money back. He’ll only feed you more lies. Is that what you want?" Mia opened her mouth but had no answer. Her father stepped forward, his voice softer. "I know it hurts, Mia. But sometimes, letting go is the only choice you have." Mia bit her lip, forcing back the tears. She had never felt this betrayed before. Alex was gone. And so was the love she thought they had. She immediately called alex and he picked, Mia gripped her phone tightly, her hands trembling as tears streamed down her face. "Alex… why? I gave you everything—I trusted you! How could you do this to me?" she sobbed. Alex let out a cruel chuckle on the other end. "Are you seriously crying right now? Wow, Mia, I thought you were smarter than this." Her heart pounded painfully in her chest. "I loved you…" "Loved me?" He scoffed. "You were just an opportunity, Mia. A rich, spoiled girl who fell right into my hands. Do you really think someone like me would ever love someone like you?" Mia's breath hitched. It felt like she had been punched in the gut. "You’re lying," she whispered. "I'm not. I was never interested in you. I just wanted your money, and guess what? I got it." His voice was laced with amusement. "Sixty million, just like that. Easiest scam of my life." Mia covered her mouth, trying to suppress the sob that threatened to escape. "Anyway," Alex continued, his tone nonchalant, "I have no reason to keep talking to you. Do yourself a favor—move on." The line went dead. Mia stood frozen, staring at the screen, her fingers trembling over the call log. Her body felt numb, her mind unable to process the depth of his betrayal. She had given him her heart, her trust, and he had crushed it without a second thought. The pain turned into anger. How could she have been so blind? Slowly, she lowered the phone from her ear, wiping away her tears. Mia curled up on her bed, her phone clutched tightly in her hands as she kept redialing Alex’s number. Each time, it rang until it went to voicemail. Her tears soaked her pillow, her chest aching with every sob. How could he do this to me? She sent him text after text. Mia: Alex, please just talk to me. Mia: Tell me this is a mistake. Tell me you didn’t mean it. Mia: I don’t care about the money, just… don’t shut me out like this. But the only response she got was silence. Her mind raced. Maybe he was just mad at her father for not believing him. Maybe there was still a chance he would come back and explain everything. But deep down, she knew the truth. Daniel had investigated. His mother was never sick. He had moved out. He had planned this from the start. A fresh wave of pain hit her, and she threw her phone across the room in frustration. It hit the wall with a loud thud before dropping to the floor. Her door suddenly swung open. Her father stood there, his expression unreadable. “I told you,” he said coldly. “I warned you.” Mia buried her face in her hands, refusing to look at him. He sighed. “You’re lucky I froze the transaction before it was completed. He never got a single cent.” Mia’s head shot up. “What?” Her father nodded. “I had the bank put a hold on large transfers from your account. By the time Alex tried to withdraw it, the money was already blocked.” For a moment, relief flooded her. But it was quickly replaced by something else—humiliation. Even if he didn’t get the money, he had still played her. He never loved her. Her father crossed his arms. “This is why I don’t trust you to make your own decisions.” His words stung, but Mia was too exhausted to argue. She just wanted to be alone. Without another word, her father left, closing the door behind him. Mia sat there in silence, staring at the phone lying on the floor. Alex was gone. And for the first time, she had no idea what to do next.
