The storm was relentless, a symphony of chaos echoing through the night as the waves crashed against the jagged cliffs of Ridicullus. Rain fell in torrents, mingling with the salt-laden mist and the tears streaming down Notty’s face. She stood on the rocky shore, her designer gown—a cascade of flowing silk and intricate embroidery—soaked through and clinging to her trembling frame. In any other moment, she might have cursed the ruin of such a masterpiece. Tonight, though, she couldn’t muster the energy to care.
The sea roared like an untamed beast, its ferocity mirroring the tempest within her. Notty pulled her arms tightly around herself, the chill of the rain biting into her skin. Her chest heaved with uneven breaths as she tried, and failed, to stem the tide of her emotions.
"Why do they hate me for something I didn’t even do?"
The thought pierced through her like a dagger. Her family’s faces flashed before her eyes, stern and unyielding as they threw accusations like stones. She had begged them to believe her, to see her as the same daughter who had strived to make them proud with every thread she wove and every design she created. But her denials had fallen on deaf ears.
“You’re a disgrace, Notty,” her mother had hissed that night, her voice trembling with anger. “Do you think the nobles of Ridicullus will wear gowns created by someone living a life of sin?”
A life of sin... They had condemned her for the whispers, the sideways glances, the unfounded rumors that spread like wildfire in Ridicullus’s social circles. No evidence, no truth—just the suffocating weight of suspicion. And so they had demanded a solution, a way to save the family’s pristine reputation. That solution had come in the form of a lavender marriage, neatly arranged and hastily executed.
Notty clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. It wasn’t fair. None of it was fair. She had married Ludikrousz, her worst frenemy of all people, just to appease her family. To shield herself from gossip, from the sideways glances that could topple everything she’d worked for. Ludikrousz—a man whose sharp tongue matched her own and whose motives were as enigmatic as his unnervingly perfect smirk.
“A lavender marriage will protect both of us,” he had said with a shrug, the night they struck their strange agreement. His tone was casual, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of something deeper—sympathy, perhaps, or understanding. “I have my own reasons for needing this. Let’s just call it a mutually beneficial arrangement.”
Mutually beneficial—the phrase rattled in her mind as thunder rolled overhead. She had wanted to believe it, wanted to think that maybe they could navigate this together, even if their relationship had always been a tangle of rivalry and reluctant respect. But tonight, standing alone on the stormy shore, she felt like a woman drowning in expectations, clinging to the fragile hope that she could still save herself.
“Notty!” The voice cut through the storm like a whip. She froze, startled by the familiarity of it. Slowly, she turned, rain dripping from her lashes as she squinted into the darkness.
There he was—Ludikrousz, striding toward her with an umbrella that was doing a poor job of keeping him dry. His coat, meticulously tailored as always, was speckled with rain, and his dark hair clung to his forehead. Even in the chaos of the storm, he managed to look infuriatingly composed.
“What are you doing here?” she snapped, her voice hoarse from crying.
“What am I doing here?” he shot back, his tone sharp but tinged with concern. “The better question is, what are you doing here, Notty? It’s the middle of the night, and you’re standing on a cliff like some tragic heroine waiting to be swept away by the sea.”
“I needed to think,” she muttered, turning back to face the crashing waves. “Alone.”
Ludikrousz sighed, the sound barely audible over the wind. “You looked more like you were trying to drown yourself than think.”
She stiffened, the accusation striking a nerve. “I wasn’t,” she said firmly, though the words sounded hollow even to her. “I’m not that fragile.”
“Really?” he drawled, stepping closer. “Because from where I’m standing, you look like a woman at her breaking point.”
She whirled on him, her eyes blazing. “What do you know about my breaking point, Ludikrousz? You’ve always been an observer, watching from the sidelines and making your little quips. You don’t know what it’s like to be accused of something you didn’t do. To be forced into a sham marriage just to salvage a reputation that shouldn’t even be in question!”
Her words hung in the air like a challenge, her chest rising and falling with the force of her emotions. Ludikrousz didn’t respond immediately, his sharp features unreadable as he studied her. Then, to her surprise, he stepped even closer, his voice dropping to something quieter, something almost gentle.
“You’re right,” he said. “I don’t know what it’s like to be in your exact position. But I know what it’s like to live a life under scrutiny, to feel like every move you make is being dissected by people waiting for you to fail. And I know what it’s like to put on a mask because it’s the only way to survive.”
Notty’s anger faltered, the fire in her eyes dimming. “Why are you telling me this?” she asked, her voice softer now.
“Because,” he said, his gaze steady, “whether you believe it or not, I’m on your side. We can do this together, Notty. And I’m not going to let you drown—not literally, and not in whatever this storm inside you is.”
The wind howled, the storm raging around them as Notty searched his face for signs of insincerity. But Ludikrousz’s expression was uncharacteristically open, and for the first time in a long time, she felt a flicker of something she hadn’t dared to feel... something she can't explain yet.
“Fine,” she said, brushing a strand of wet hair from her face. “Let’s go back. There’s no point standing out here any longer.”
Ludikrousz nodded, stepping aside to let her pass. As they began the trek back up the rocky path, lightning split the sky, illuminating the cliffs in stark, fleeting brilliance. It was then that Ludikrousz noticed something strange—a faint shimmer around Notty, like an aura of light that danced and flickered with the rhythm of the storm.
“Notty,” he said sharply, grabbing her arm to stop her. “Do you see that?”
She frowned, following his gaze to her own hands. Her breath caught as she saw it—the faint glow, pulsing like a heartbeat and spreading outward from her fingertips. It was beautiful and terrifying all at once, a manifestation of something she couldn’t quite name.
“What is this?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Ludikrousz’s grip tightened on her arm, his expression suddenly serious. “I think,” he said slowly, “this is the beginning of something we can’t ignore.”
As the glow intensified, the storm seemed to respond, the wind whipping around them in a frenzy. Notty stared at her hands, the light illuminating her pale skin and casting shadows on the jagged rocks beneath her feet. For a moment, time seemed to stand still, the storm and the sea and the world itself holding its breath.
“Ludikrousz,” she said, her voice barely audible. “What’s happening to me?”
Before he could answer, the glow flared brighter, forcing them both to shield their eyes. When it faded, the world was eerily quiet, the storm suddenly subdued as if it, too, had been silenced by whatever had just awakened within her.
As Notty and Ludikrousz stood amidst the storm’s aftermath, the faint shimmer around her hands began to pulse once more, signaling that this was only the beginning of a far greater mystery.
