Chapter 34 - A woman?

Ai’s hand hovered over the machine’s control panel. The faint hum that had once felt so distant was now unmistakable, vibrating through his bones. The air around them thickened as the strange energy surged through the metal beast before him. His pulse quickened, but he refused to let fear take control. There was too much at stake.
“What is this place, Ai?” Aria asked softly, her voice filled with awe and hesitation. She was standing a few steps back, her eyes scanning the sprawling machine, its complex, alien design more intricate than anything they had encountered so far.
Ai didn’t answer immediately. He was too absorbed in the machine, the way its hum seemed to beckon him, urging him to interact with it. Everything had led to this moment, this machine that felt like both a warning and a promise. If it was the key to uncovering the truth, it was also the key to whatever future remained in this shattered world.
“I don’t know,” Ai said finally, his voice steady despite the storm brewing inside him. “But I think it’s the core—the reason everything changed. This... this is where it all started.”
Shade, always the cautious one, eyed the machine warily. He had been a skeptic since the beginning, and now, standing before this unknown entity, he wasn’t sure what to think. “You sure we should mess with this? It could be dangerous. We don’t know what it’s capable of.”
Ai nodded, though uncertainty flickered in his mind. What if this was a trap? What if turning this machine on would bring about more destruction? The possibility weighed heavily on him, but his need for answers outweighed the fear.
"I have to," Ai muttered under his breath. "I need to understand. This is the only way."
Without giving Aria or Shade another word, Ai pressed a sequence of buttons on the machine’s control panel, his fingers moving with a practiced urgency. The lights above flickered violently, casting strange shadows across the walls. The sound of gears grinding against each other echoed through the building, and Ai felt a sudden, overpowering rush of energy fill the air.
Then, the machine’s core began to glow.
A deep, resonating tone filled the space, reverberating through the metal walls and vibrating the floor beneath them. Ai could feel the weight of it, almost as if the entire structure was alive, awakening from a long slumber.
Suddenly, a holographic interface appeared in front of Ai, flashing with codes and data. The symbols were foreign, but Ai’s mind was sharp, and he quickly began to recognize the patterns. His hands flew over the interface, deciphering the information with an intensity that felt almost instinctual. It was as if his very existence had been designed for this.
“What are you doing?” Aria asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of awe and fear.
“I’m opening it,” Ai replied, his voice distant. His mind was already elsewhere, diving deeper into the data. “This... this machine isn’t just a remnant of the past. It’s a key to the future.”
As Ai’s fingers hovered over the final sequence, a sudden flash of memory surged through his mind. It was the same vision he had seen in his dream—a younger version of himself, standing beside Professor Norlax, staring at the machines with an unsettling sense of purpose. But there was something else—something that made Ai's stomach churn. He saw himself, not as a human, but as part of the machine. A creation. A tool.
Ai hesitated. The doubt gnawed at him. Was he really human? Or was he just another part of the experiment? The revelation stung more than he could have imagined.
“Something’s wrong,” Ai murmured, stepping back from the interface.
Aria rushed forward, her hand on his arm. “Ai, what’s happening?”
Before he could answer, the machine’s core flickered violently, and the ground beneath them trembled once more. A low rumble echoed through the facility, and the walls seemed to close in around them. Ai’s heart pounded in his chest.
“Get back!” Shade shouted, pulling both Aria and Ai toward the exit. But it was too late.
The machine’s power surged uncontrollably, and the facility seemed to collapse in on itself. Sparks flew from the walls as the ground cracked beneath their feet. The sound of twisting metal and groaning machinery filled the air. Ai felt a sharp pain in his head, as though something was trying to break free from inside him.
“No!” Ai shouted, his voice desperate as he fought to stay upright. “We’re not done yet! I need to know—”
A blinding flash of light enveloped the room, and Ai felt himself being thrown backward, his body weightless. Everything around him turned to chaos.
When the light faded, Ai’s world went dark.
Ai awoke in a different place. The surroundings were quiet—eerily so. The air smelled sterile, almost too clean. His body was heavy, his limbs stiff, as if he had been asleep for far longer than he should have been. The faint hum of machinery echoed in the distance, but this time, it wasn’t the violent surge he had felt before. It was steady, calm.
Slowly, Ai sat up, his head spinning. He tried to shake off the disorienting sensation, but something felt off—more than just the way he had woken up. Something had changed.
He stood up, his eyes scanning the new environment. It was a room, but not like any room he had been in before. The walls were smooth, metallic, and the floor was made of the same material. It looked like a laboratory, but much cleaner, much more advanced than anything he had ever seen.
Before he could move, a soft voice echoed from the shadows. "You’re awake."
Ai turned to find a figure stepping into the light. It was a woman, her features sharp and calculating, but there was something strangely familiar about her.
“Who are you?” Ai asked, his voice hoarse but strong. He wasn’t sure if he could trust her, but he knew one thing—this wasn’t just another survivor. This was something different.
The woman smiled, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of pity and something darker. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
