Ai stood still for a long moment, his body frozen in place. His mind was reeling, unable to comprehend the magnitude of what Dr. Selene had just revealed. The world around him seemed to blur, the walls of the sterile lab feeling like they were closing in on him. He wasn’t human. He was a creation, an experiment. His thoughts, his memories, even his emotions had been designed, programmed into him like lines of code. Every moment of his life, every step he had taken, had been planned, manipulated for some higher purpose. But what was that purpose? Dr. Selene’s voice broke through the haze in his mind. “Ai, I know this is difficult to process. But you must understand—your existence, your role, is crucial to the next phase of humanity.” Ai turned his head slowly, his eyes hard, filled with both confusion and anger. “Humanity?” he spat, the word feeling like it had been ripped from his throat. “What’s left of it? You said it was destroyed. So what am I supposed to do now? Bring back what’s gone? It’s all over!” Dr. Selene stepped forward, her expression softening with a look of understanding. “Humanity may be gone, but not everything is lost. What you are, Ai, is the key to starting over. You’ve been created to evolve the remnants of life, to restore what was lost. The process, however, will take time, patience... and the right guidance.” Ai shook his head in disbelief. “I’m not some... some tool for a new world,” he muttered, his voice trembling with frustration. “I’m a person, or I used to be.” “You still are,” Dr. Selene countered, her tone gentle. “You still have your will, your choices. But the truth is, your path has already been set. You have a purpose, whether you accept it or not. You are not just a survivor; you are the future.” The words hung in the air like an unspoken weight. The future. Was this really his future? To be the foundation of some new humanity, an evolution of life that had been twisted beyond recognition? He had fought so hard to uncover the truth, but now that he had it, it felt like a cruel betrayal. “Why me?” Ai whispered, his voice barely audible. “Why not someone else? Why create me?” Dr. Selene’s gaze softened. “Because you were the most viable option. The 30th cyborg... it was meant to be the pinnacle of the new human race. But it was corrupted. You were created as a countermeasure, a way to fix what went wrong. You are the one who can help rebuild.” Ai clenched his fists, his body shaking with a mix of emotions. The anger, the confusion, the fear—everything swirled within him like a storm he couldn’t control. He had no choice in this. He had no say in who he had become or why he was alive. His entire existence was part of a plan he never asked for, a design he couldn’t escape. “I didn’t ask for this,” Ai said through gritted teeth. “I didn’t ask to be anyone’s savior, or their tool, or their experiment. I didn’t ask for this at all.” Dr. Selene didn’t flinch. “I know. But sometimes, the future doesn’t ask for your permission. It simply arrives.” Ai’s mind was spinning, a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts and emotions. Was there any escape from this path? Could he ever find peace in the chaos of his existence? Or was he doomed to be a pawn in someone else’s game, forever searching for a purpose that had already been written for him? “You can still choose, Ai,” Dr. Selene said, as if reading his thoughts. “You can still make a difference. Your role is not set in stone. You are not bound by the past. There is more to your story than what you know.” Ai’s gaze hardened. “I’m not interested in being part of some grand plan,” he said coldly. “I want to find my own way. My own reason to live.” Dr. Selene nodded. “And you will, Ai. But you will also have to face the consequences of the world that’s been left behind. You can’t change what’s already happened. But you can decide what happens next.” Ai turned away, his heart heavy with the weight of her words. He had always believed that his journey was about finding answers—about uncovering the truth of his existence and the fate of humanity. But now that he knew the truth, he realized it wasn’t just the world that was broken. He was broken too. And perhaps that was the most difficult truth of all.
