Chapter 19: The Ring of Souls
Chapter 19: The Ring of Souls
The haunted village of Drear Hollow loomed ahead like a forgotten place lost to time. Shrouded in mist, with crumbling buildings and crooked streets, it was rumored to be the home of the Ring of Souls —a powerful artifact capable of controlling spirits. The village had been abandoned for centuries, its few remaining inhabitants being ghosts tethered to the land by dark magic.
Evanora and Everett stood at the entrance to the village, their breath visible in the chilly air. Their new allies, Alaric and the witches of Moonlight Meadows, waited nearby, making preparations for their mission.
“Are you sure this is the right place?” Everett asked, staring into the eerie fog that covered Drear Hollow. “It doesn’t exactly scream ‘welcoming tourist spot.’”
Alaric, the lost prince of Astoria who had recently joined their quest, nodded grimly. “The Ring of Souls is said to be hidden in the heart of Drear Hollow. If Monroe gets his hands on it, he could summon an army of vengeful spirits to do his bidding.”
Evanora shivered at the thought. “We definitely can’t let that happen.”
She glanced down at her broomstick, which lay at her feet. Even after all their adventures, the broom was still as stubborn as ever. It hadn’t helped that it had developed a habit of bouncing in mid-air like a pogo stick whenever she tried to fly it. Today, however, wasn’t a day for broomstick antics.
“Are you ready?” Evanora asked Everett, her voice filled with determination despite her nervousness.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” he replied, though there was a hint of humor in his tone. “I just hope we don’t have to deal with too many ghosts.”
“Don’t jinx it,” Evanora muttered, rolling her eyes. She turned to Alaric and the witches. “Stay on guard. Drear Hollow is full of traps, and the spirits here aren’t exactly friendly.”
Alaric gave a curt nod.
“We’ll cover you from here. If anything goes wrong, we’ll create a distraction.”
With that, Evanora and Everett cautiously entered the village, walking down the cobblestone path that creaked beneath their feet. The air was thick with an otherworldly chill, and shadows danced along the walls of the crumbling houses. Everett squinted through the mist, trying to make sense of the layout.
“It’s like this place is frozen in time,” he said quietly, his voice echoing slightly in the stillness.
“Yeah,” Evanora agreed, clutching her wand tightly in her hand.
“But we need to focus. The Ring of Souls is probably hidden in the village’s central tower.”
They continued forward, their footsteps echoing unnervingly in the silent streets. As they turned a corner, they were met with a narrow alleyway lined with overgrown vines and eerie glowing lanterns. The shadows seemed to shift and sway, playing tricks on their minds.
Everett leaned in closer to Evanora.
“You don’t think any of those shadows are... you know, ghosts, do you?”
Evanora gave him a nervous smile. “Let’s hope not.”
Suddenly, a low whisper echoed through the alleyway, sending chills down their spines. A cold gust of wind blew past them, and Everett instinctively grabbed Evanora’s arm.
“Okay, I think it’s safe to say there are definitely ghosts here,” Everett said, his voice slightly shaky.
Evanora nodded, her heart racing. “We’ll be fine. Just stick close to me.”
As they walked further into the village, the whispering grew louder, and shadows began to swirl around them. Evanora could feel the presence of the spirits watching them, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Without warning, a ghostly figure materialized in front of them, blocking their path. Its translucent form flickered, and its hollow eyes seemed to stare directly into their souls.
“Who dares to enter Drear Hollow?” the ghost rasped, its voice cold and menacing.
Everett tightened his grip on his wand. “Uh... just passing through?”
The ghost floated closer, its spectral hand reaching toward them. “You seek the Ring of Souls, don’t you? It belongs to the dead. You cannot take it.”
Evanora stepped forward, her wand at the ready. “We don’t want to harm anyone. We’re trying to stop someone—Monroe—who wants to use the ring for evil.”
The ghost let out a bone-chilling laugh. “Many have come to Drear Hollow with such intentions, but none have left alive.”
Evanora’s eyes darted to Everett, who looked just as terrified as she felt.
“This isn’t looking good,” she whispered.
Before they could react, the ghost let out a piercing scream, and suddenly, more spirits began to emerge from the walls, surrounding them. The air grew colder, and the ground beneath their feet trembled.
“We need to move!” Everett shouted.
Evanora grabbed his hand and pulled him forward, running through the alleyway as fast as they could. The ghosts gave chase, their eerie wails echoing behind them. Evanora’s broomstick, as if sensing the danger, bounced erratically at her side, threatening to trip them up.
“Not now!” Evanora hissed at the broom as it clattered along beside them.
They raced through the twisting streets, desperately trying to find the central tower where the Ring of Souls was hidden. The fog thickened around them, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet ahead.
“There!” Everett pointed to a looming structure in the distance—a tall, decaying tower that seemed to pulse with dark energy.
They skidded to a halt in front of the tower’s entrance, gasping for breath. The door was old and rusted, barely hanging on its hinges.
“Let’s get this over with,” Evanora muttered, pushing the door open.
Inside, the air was thick with the stench of decay. The walls were lined with ancient symbols, and at the center of the room, on a pedestal made of black stone, sat the **Ring of Souls**. It was a simple silver band, but it pulsed with a sinister energy that sent shivers down Evanora’s spine.
“We found it,” Everett whispered, stepping toward the pedestal.
But before they could reach the ring, the door slammed shut behind them, and the room was plunged into darkness. The air grew colder, and the whispering voices returned, louder and more frantic.
“You should not have come here,” a voice hissed from the shadows.
Suddenly, ghostly figures began to materialize around them, their hollow eyes glowing with malice.
“Great,” Everett muttered, raising his wand. “This just keeps getting better.”
The ghosts lunged at them, and Evanora quickly cast a protective barrier around them, deflecting the spirits’ attacks. But the barrier wouldn’t hold for long.
“We need to get that ring and get out of here,” Evanora said, her voice tense.
Everett nodded and sprinted toward the pedestal, dodging the ghostly hands that reached for him. He grabbed the ring, and the moment his fingers touched it, the entire room shook violently.
The ghosts let out an ear-piercing scream, their forms flickering and distorting. For a moment, it seemed as though they were about to be torn apart by the dark energy swirling around them.
“Evanora!” Everett shouted, holding up the ring. “I think this thing is making them stronger!”
Evanora’s eyes widened. “We need to break its connection to the spirits!”
Without hesitation, she raised her wand and aimed at the ring. A beam of bright light shot from her wand, striking the ring and shattering the dark energy surrounding it.
The ghosts let out one final wail before disappearing, their forms dissolving into the air.
Everett stumbled back, clutching the ring tightly in his hand. “That was... way too close.”
Evanora nodded, panting heavily. “But we did it. We have the Ring of Souls.”
They quickly made their way out of the tower, the mist beginning to clear as the spirits were banished from Drear Hollow.
As they stepped outside, Alaric and the witches of Moonlight Meadows greeted them with relieved smiles.
“You did it,” Alaric said, nodding in approval.
Evanora smiled tiredly.
“Yeah. But I think I’ve had enough ghost hunting for a lifetime.”
Everett chuckled, slipping the ring into his pocket.
“Let’s just hope Monroe doesn’t get any more ideas about summoning spirits.”
They exchanged relieved glances, knowing that their mission was far from over but for now, they had earned a brief moment of victory.Download Novelah App
