Chapter 4: The First Shadow Technique

Jaehwon stood before the massive stone door leading to the boss lair, his heart pounding in his chest. The air was thick with tension, and the oppressive silence weighed heavily on his shoulders. He knew what awaited him on the other side of that door—a creature unlike anything he had ever faced before, a being of pure darkness and malice.
“The final test,” Jaehwon whispered to himself, gripping the hilt of his sword tightly. The Shadow Authority pulsed within him, as if responding to the impending challenge. He could feel the power coursing through his veins, but it wasn’t enough to quell the fear gnawing at his insides.
Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open. The ancient stone groaned in protest, and a cold gust of wind swept past him as the door slowly creaked open. Beyond it was a cavernous chamber, lit only by the faint, eerie glow of the dungeon’s ever-present moss. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and a low, rumbling growl echoed from the shadows.
Jaehwon’s eyes widened as the figure of the Dark Wolf came into view. The beast was colossal, towering at least 20 meters tall, its fur a shifting mass of darkness that seemed to absorb the light around it. Its eyes glowed with a malevolent red, and its fangs gleamed like jagged blades. Each step it took shook the ground, sending tremors through the stone beneath Jaehwon’s feet.
“This… this is insane,” Jaehwon muttered, his voice barely audible over the thunderous growl of the creature. His grip tightened on his sword, his knuckles white with the effort. “How am I supposed to beat something like that?”
The Dark Wolf snarled, its massive jaws parting to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth. Without warning, it lunged forward, moving with a speed that belied its size. Jaehwon barely had time to react, raising his sword just in time to block the creature’s attack. The force of the blow sent him skidding across the chamber, his back slamming into the cold stone wall.
“Ugh!” Jaehwon gasped, the air knocked out of his lungs. He struggled to regain his footing, his body screaming in protest. The Dark Wolf didn’t give him a moment to recover—it was on him again, its claws raking through the air with deadly precision.
Jaehwon rolled to the side, barely avoiding the creature’s strike. He scrambled to his feet, his mind racing. “I can’t beat this thing head-on… I need to think, need to find a way—”
But the Dark Wolf was relentless. It charged at him again, its massive body barreling toward him with terrifying speed. Jaehwon raised his sword to block, but the impact sent him flying once more, his body crashing to the ground in a heap.
“I-I’m… losing…” Jaehwon wheezed, struggling to push himself up. His vision blurred, and pain radiated through his entire body. The Shadow Authority flared within him, but it wasn’t enough—not against a monster like this.
The Dark Wolf growled, circling him like a predator stalking its prey. Jaehwon could see the hunger in its eyes, the desire to tear him apart. He couldn’t let it end like this—not after everything he’d been through.
“I won’t… give up,” Jaehwon whispered, his voice trembling with determination. He closed his eyes, focusing on the power of the Shadow Authority. He could feel it, just beyond his reach—something new, something powerful.
“Shadow Authority… awaken!” Jaehwon cried out, pouring every ounce of his will into the command. The darkness within him surged, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. The power responded, and Jaehwon felt something shift—a new ability, a new strength.
**First Arts: Shadow Clones.**
The words echoed in his mind, and Jaehwon’s eyes snapped open. The Dark Wolf was upon him, its jaws wide open, ready to strike. But Jaehwon was ready.
“Shadow Clones!” Jaehwon shouted, his voice filled with newfound confidence. The shadows around him twisted and warped, forming into three identical copies of himself. Each clone held a sword, their expressions mirroring Jaehwon’s steely determination.
The Dark Wolf hesitated, its glowing eyes narrowing in confusion. Jaehwon didn’t waste the opportunity. He and his clones moved in perfect synchronization, surrounding the beast from all sides.
“Now!” Jaehwon commanded, and the clones struck in unison. Their swords flashed through the air, slicing into the Dark Wolf’s fur with precision and speed. The creature howled in pain, its massive body thrashing as it tried to fend off the attacks.
Jaehwon felt the strain of maintaining the clones, each one draining his mana with every passing second. But he couldn’t stop now—not when he was finally turning the tide of the battle.
“Keep going!” Jaehwon urged himself and his clones, their blades cutting through the darkness. The Dark Wolf roared, its attacks becoming more desperate as it struggled to fight off the relentless assault. Claws slashed through the air, but the clones evaded with unnatural speed, each strike weakening the beast bit by bit.
Jaehwon could feel the exhaustion setting in, but he pushed through the pain. “This is it… this is my chance!” he shouted, charging forward with his clones at his side. They leaped into the air, their swords aimed for the Dark Wolf’s exposed neck.
The beast’s eyes widened in realization, but it was too late. Jaehwon and his clones struck as one, their blades piercing through the Dark Wolf’s flesh. The creature let out a final, ear-splitting howl before its body convulsed and crumbled into a mass of shadows.
Jaehwon landed on the ground, breathing heavily, his clones dissolving into the darkness around him. He stood there, sword in hand, as the last remnants of the Dark Wolf faded into nothingness. The silence of the chamber was deafening, broken only by the sound of Jaehwon’s ragged breathing.
“I… I did it,” Jaehwon whispered, disbelief washing over him. He had defeated the boss, against all odds. He had won.
The realization hit him like a tidal wave, and a grin spread across his face. “I really did it,” he repeated, his voice growing louder, more confident. He raised his sword in triumph, the weight of the victory settling on his shoulders.
But the elation was short-lived. As the Dark Wolf’s body disappeared, the chamber began to tremble, the stone walls shaking violently. Jaehwon’s eyes widened in alarm as the ground beneath him cracked and splintered.
“What’s happening?!” he shouted, stumbling as the floor gave way beneath him. The entire chamber was collapsing, the walls caving in as if the dungeon itself was reacting to the defeat of its guardian.
Jaehwon tried to run, but the ground crumbled too quickly. He felt himself falling, the darkness swallowing him whole. For a moment, all he could see was the endless void, the world spinning out of control.
And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the tremors stopped. Jaehwon hit solid ground with a painful thud, the air knocked out of his lungs. He lay there for a moment, dazed and disoriented, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Slowly, he pushed himself up, wincing at the sharp pain in his side. He was in a new chamber, one that was eerily quiet and bathed in a soft, ethereal light. The walls were smooth and polished, unlike the rough stone of the previous chamber, and the air was filled with a strange, soothing energy.
“What… where am I?” Jaehwon muttered, looking around in confusion. He spotted something in the center of the chamber—a pedestal, glowing with a soft, blue light.
Cautiously, Jaehwon approached the pedestal, his sword still in hand. As he got closer, he saw that there was something resting on it—a small, intricately carved box, radiating with a mysterious energy.
“What is this…?” Jaehwon reached out to touch the box, but hesitated. The Shadow Authority pulsed within him, as if warning him to be careful. But Jaehwon couldn’t resist the pull, the curiosity gnawing at him.
With a deep breath, he placed his hand on the box. The moment his fingers brushed against it, the chamber was flooded with light, blinding and intense. Jaehwon cried out, covering his eyes as the light overwhelmed him.
And then, just as quickly as it had appeared, the light faded. Jaehwon blinked, his vision slowly returning to normal. The box was gone, and in its place was a new item—an amulet, glowing with a dark, pulsating energy.
Jaehwon’s heart skipped a beat. “Is this… for me?” he wondered aloud, picking up the amulet. The moment he touched it, he felt a surge of power, unlike anything he had ever experienced before. The Shadow Authority resonated with the amulet, and Jaehwon knew, deep down, that this was what he had been searching for.
He slipped the amulet around his neck, feeling the power settle within him, as if it had always been a part of him. A sense of calm washed over him, the fear and uncertainty fading away.
Jaehwon smiled, a new determination burning in his eyes. “This is only the beginning,” he said quietly, his voice filled with resolve. He had faced the darkness, fought against impossible odds, and emerged victorious.
And now, with the amulet Jaehwon adjusted the amulet around his neck, feeling its weight settle comfortably against his chest. The glow from the amulet cast a soft light on the chamber’s polished walls, creating an almost serene atmosphere amidst the chaos he had just endured.
“I can’t believe it…” Jaehwon muttered, his voice tinged with awe. “I actually did it. I beat the Dark Wolf.” He looked around the chamber, still in disbelief at his own victory. “And now, this amulet. What does it even do?”
He took a deep breath, the exhilaration of triumph mingling with a new sense of curiosity. The chamber was silent, save for the faint hum of the amulet’s energy, and Jaehwon felt a strange sense of peace. But that peace was short-lived as he remembered the collapsing dungeon.
“I’ve got to get out of here,” he said, determination settling into his voice. “No more delays. I need to make sure I get back safely.” Jaehwon made his way back to the chamber’s exit, navigating carefully through the labyrinthine paths.
As he walked, he tried to make sense of the amulet’s power. “It feels like the Shadow Authority is resonating with it,” he mused. “But what’s its purpose? Will it give me new abilities? Or is it something more?”
The sound of his footsteps echoed in the empty corridors, and Jaehwon soon reached the entrance of the dungeon. The exit was bathed in the pale light of dawn, a stark contrast to the darkness he had just left behind. Relief washed over him as he stepped into the daylight, feeling the warmth on his face.
“Finally,” Jaehwon said, letting out a sigh of relief. “I’m out of that place. And with the amulet, I can finally figure out what’s next.”
As he made his way back to the city, his thoughts were consumed by the amulet. The power it held was undeniable, but he needed to understand it better. He knew he couldn’t do it alone.
“I need to talk to someone who knows about these things,” Jaehwon decided. “Maybe there’s a scholar or a mage who can help me understand this.”
He arrived back at the city, his body exhausted but his spirit invigorated. The streets were bustling with activity, and Jaehwon moved through the crowd with purpose, heading toward the library. The old stone building loomed ahead, its grandeur a reminder of the knowledge it held within.
Inside the library, Jaehwon was greeted by the familiar scent of old books and parchment. The quiet was soothing after the chaos of the dungeon. He approached the front desk where a librarian, a middle-aged woman with spectacles perched on the edge of her nose, looked up.
“Good morning,” she greeted. “How can I assist you today?”
“I need to speak with someone who can help me with… magical artifacts,” Jaehwon said, trying to find the right words. “I recently acquired something that I need more information about.”
The librarian’s interest was piqued. “Magical artifacts, you say? We do have a few experts on staff who might be able to help. If you could follow me…”
She led Jaehwon to a private study room where a tall, elderly man with a long, white beard was immersed in a book. He looked up as they entered, his sharp eyes immediately assessing Jaehwon.
“Ah, what do we have here?” the man said, his voice rich with curiosity. “Another seeker of knowledge, I presume?”
“Yes, sir,” Jaehwon said, stepping forward. “I’ve come into possession of a magical amulet and need to understand its properties.”
The scholar’s eyes lit up. “An amulet, you say? Do show me.”
Jaehwon carefully removed the amulet from around his neck and placed it on the table. The scholar adjusted his spectacles and examined the amulet closely, his expression growing more intrigued with each passing second.
“This is quite a remarkable piece,” the scholar said, finally looking up. “It bears traces of ancient magic, particularly shadow magic. It’s rare to see such an artifact.”
“Shadow magic?” Jaehwon asked, leaning in closer. “Is there anything specific I should know about it?”
The scholar nodded, picking up a book from the table and flipping through the pages. “Shadow magic is a powerful and often dangerous form of magic. It’s associated with illusions, stealth, and, in some cases, control over darkness itself. This amulet likely enhances those abilities, potentially granting you new powers or enhancing the Shadow Authority you already wield.”
Jaehwon’s eyes widened. “So, it’s connected to the Shadow Authority? Does that mean it will help me with the abilities I’ve already gained?”
“Precisely,” the scholar said, closing the book and looking at Jaehwon with a serious expression. “But be cautious. Shadow magic is not to be trifled with. It can consume those who are not prepared.”
Jaehwon nodded, absorbing the information. “Thank you. I’ll be careful.”
The scholar gave him a reassuring smile. “If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to return. We’re here to help.”
Jaehwon thanked the scholar and left the library, his mind racing with possibilities. The amulet had the potential to enhance his abilities, but it also came with risks. He knew he had to tread carefully.
As he walked through the city, Jaehwon felt a sense of purpose and determination. The amulet was a powerful tool, but it was up to him to harness its power wisely. He had faced the darkness of the dungeon and emerged victorious, but the challenges were far from over.
“I’ve come this far,” Jaehwon said to himself, his voice filled with resolve. “I’m not going to stop now. I’ll master this power and use it to become stronger. For myself, and for those who need me.”
With a newfound sense of purpose, Jaehwon made his way home, ready to face whatever came next. The amulet hung around his neck, a constant reminder of the power he had yet to fully understand. But one thing was certain—he was no longer the weakest hunter in the world. He was a force to be reckoned with, and he would use every ounce of his strength to prove it.
