Chapter 30: In His Eyes

"Ahn Minhyuk fled out. He left Park Hyejin and all of you in a very tough situation right now."
Yuki's statement sounds like thunder to their ears, causing their anxiety to go up on high level. Jungwon swallowed, cosuming his fears down, but he can't show it, not in the face of people who draw strength from him and most especially to the equally tensed Park Hyejin on his side.
When his anxiety peaked all he did is do the 333; naming three things he can see, three sounds he can hear and three parts of his body. It's working everytime, but suddenly, it's seems like it's not doing it's effect. He was grasping for an alternative, like his brain entirely shuts down.
"Damn it. How could you let this all happened?" Yuki was fussing so hard. "I guess this is it. I don't have any other choice but to--"
"Sunghoon Hyung--"
Finally Jungwon's rational brain came back running, halting Yuki from what he's about to say.
Sunghoon flinched. His wary eyes tells he's also pertubed.
"Y-Yes?"
"How fast can you learn a skating routine?"
"W-Well, I can learn it faster than anyone here. I'm an ex skater. My skills are still unscathed. Wait a minute. Are you suggesting--?"
"You take Ahn Minhyuk's place, I'll take your lines. What do you say, Yuki?"
Yuki was perplexed but given their time, he was amazed by how Jungwon's mind works intelligently. He's a stoic, rational leader the group really deserves.
"Well, leaders are only leaders if you follow them. Give Hoon a skate, now!" Yuki ordered a staff.
"Are you sure about this, Oppa?" Hyejin butted in, quite concerned for the turnaround.
"Don't disparage me, Park Hyejin. I am the one who taught you the Biellman spin, right? You quite struggled with it when you're 12. And I'm not bragging here but I'm observing Minhyuk's performances for the entire year and no, he's not even close to what I can do."
"So are we good now? Can you promise me a good performance later on? Darn in, how could you do this to me again? It seems like you are all enjoying giving me a hard time." Yuki grumbled, quite displeased.
"One more thing." Jungwon took his glance to catch Hyejin's eyes. "Jagiya--" he muttered, breathing slow, as if his words are the most pleasurable thing to say.
Hyejin heard a synchronic choke, followed by a dramatic sighs and glancing at the faces of the people around the room, it was wrapped in disbelief witnessing Jungwon bravely displaying his affection.
"Oh, God. Why am I even here?" Jay, from far side, whispered incredulously.
"Uh-oh. Someone's jealous. Meowz unit no more." Sunoo let out a little giggle, nudging Jay.
"D-Did I just hear Won called her "baby" right in front of everyone here?" Jake was flustered, turning into Ni-Ki.
"Yeah, you just did, Hyung." Ni-ki softly responded and was covered with titters.
"Whew! I didn't expect that hard launch, like, that was smooth. Jungwonie learned faster than I thought." Heeseung is chuckling and looking like a proud master.
"Seriously? Right in front of me and in the middle of a quandary? Get out of here." Sunghoon suddenly bleated coherently.
Totally ignoring his members ribbings. Jungwon stepped to the fore and gently cupped his hand on Hyejin's face. He gave her a sly smile causing the notch on his cheek to appear while gazing at her intensely, the kind of look that gave undeciphered meaning.
"W-Won--" Hyejin was stilted seeing those playfully teasing eyes. "I know what you're thinking. Let's not gamble on it."
"I won't accept what Minhyuk had said to you. You're a champ, not a second place with consolation price. Redeem yourself, Jagiya. Show them what you got."
"Minhyuk called you a second place with consolation price?! That filthy nuthead!" Sunghoon croaked in fury.
"Ya, ya. Hoon, loosen up." Heeseung intercepted, rubbing Sunghoon's shoulder to unruffle his digressing temper. "Okay, what's the catch, leader cat? We're running out of time."
"Whatever that is, just say yes, Hyejin. Show to that prick he was wrong for looking down at you." Sunghoon asserted, quite temperate now.
Jungwon makes decisions fast and come from his sense of empathy, combined with logic and grounded in reality. For when he makes choices that way, it's always better and never a failure. He reverted back to give his attention to his members, his face was compelled with a sound decision that cannot be refuted.
"We're going to give Hyejin her vital moment. After her performance with Sunghoon Hyung, let's wrap things up with "Forget Me Not".
"W-What? Wait. We're going to sing Japanese?" Jake was packed with uncertainty.
"There's a prompt, Jake. And yeah, no problem for me." Jay was confident and was fast to settle.
"I'm on. Let's do it." Ni-Ki quicklly agreed, releasing his thrills by clicking his tongue.
"Vi6en's up and we don't have time. You all better get ready while I do some quick changes on your needed tracks." Yuki fervently uttered before taling his way out.
"Wait a minute--" Sunghoon silenced the rackety crowd, his judging eyes were focused solely on Jungwon. "What's with "Forget Me Not"? Is the song have significant meaning to both of you?"
Hyejin timidly scratched her head as her words dried up. The whole situation is getting disintegrated and Park Sunghoon's temper is uncontrollably going south. She needed to find a way to dodge herself out.
"I need to change my skates." she answered instead, feet are so ready for the run off.
"Let me do it for you." Jungwon gets into the act, pulling her fast, leaving everyone completely wordless.
Finding a vacant room is so much more than the sum of its parts and it encourages themselves to finally breathe. Within the desolation, in the quietude they longed to find, their eyes met, both lungs took in air to maximum and their hearts gained a lively rhythm.
"I'm sorry but I need to drag you out. It's getting  chaotic in there, you might lose your focus. And Sunghoon Hyung is worst in handling stress, he's eager to fight everyone when frazzled."
"I understand."
"And I want you all for myself, even for a minute." Jungwon hushed, grinning wide.
"But this isn't the best time, Jagiya. Help me change these skates." Hyejin answered with a sheepish smile and proceeds to untie her laces.
Hearing her utterance, Jungwon was frozen numbed. Her soft, gentle voice calling him affectionately got him immensely thrilled. Watching her reform her skates, it took him back to time when he took a childish decision to spend his break with Park Sunghoon, never knowing what kind of fate awaits for him. But fate decided it's course on him. It's fate that led him to meet her. It is also fate she took hold of his soul in a way no other is capable of. It is fate he fell in love with Park Hyejin.
"Done! Ah, it feels so good to wear these skates again! Come on, let's do this now!" Hyejin was suddenly pumped up.
"Can please you say it again?"
"Say what?" her brow arched in a tangle. "Ah!" she giggled, bagging his eyes. "Jagiya?"
Speechless and deeply smitten, he goes in a way where everything is uncontrollable. He is madly in love, falling really, really hard. Jungwon seized her waist with his arm, clasped it hard, and captured her sneering lips, all for him to take. A love rush sealed with an unexpected kiss, a seconds of hug before he let her lips go.
Breathless and caught unawares, Hyejin jokingly stroke his arm, face was torn between being staggered and relishing.
"You are one sly cat, Yang Jungwon."
"I'm not done yet." he cunningly responded.
"Jagiya!"
Seeing her pouting face, Jungwin heartily cackled. Hyejin's facial expression was enough to bust a gut.
"Alright, alright. Let's save it for later." he straightened up to control his giggles. "I think we need to go out now. Let's go." he pulled Hyejin's hand only to feel her strong clasp, her worries run through his skin.
"Hey--" he came closer, caressing her cheek. "I always believed in you, yet I'm still astonished. What you did back then was credible and incredible all at once. I saw what you did and how amazing you are. I also saw how you got from there. It's just so far from the beaten track of what everyone else was doing. Own the stage, make it yours, Jagiya."
There was encouragement in his eyes, the way they were warm and soft. His words could be few or many, yet always around him she felt more capable, more able, a better human than she otherwise could have been. Jungwon had a way of encouraging her to see all that she was capable of. Where others thought they are her protectors by holding her back or hitting upon her self esteem, he did the exact opposite. If they were chains, Jungwon was the key. He wanted her to have the same mental freedom he had, to see her strengths and build them stronger.
"Hyejin-a--" Coach Jang appeared and quickly dragged her out in Jungwon's arms. "It's show time! You need to take your positions now!"
Jungwon nodded and leaned on Hyejin's ears for a whisper. "I love you and I'm so proud of you." he hushed and moved along to pinch her cheek.
He expressed his love and what a power it is, he wanted to melt in thrills. She met Jungwon steady gaze before he pulled away and suddenly, everything was right in the world again. She's so ready to take those glides.
"The thing is, I'm so worried if your cousin can pull the routine. He's an ex skater, yes, but you didn't practice the spin together, not even once. You might hurt yourself." Coach Jang is nervously clicking her nails, face was filled with dread.
"You're talking about Park Sunghoon. What's there to worry about?" Hyejin cuts her coach's apprehensions and proceeds to take the ice stage.
In the moments before the transitions, before the stage and spotlights, Hyejin felt as if she was back in an old rink, blessed by dappled light. For then there is the comfort of the shade and the invite of the warm rays. Taking her side, Hyejin breathes out, her senses were on extreme level, all for the the show. That is what she do.
The first time her favorite skates touched the ice there was a frisson that was too evasive to describe, yet later she could name what it was. Freedom. The point at which her will for adventure took over from her shy sense of vulnerability, a quick rush of electricity that jump started her soul.
The lights came to berth revealing the center rink, it travelled dramatically to where she is, capturing a beautiful facade. Her moves flowed along with Jungwon's glorious hum, cascading through the tone of the incredibly dreamy track, Moonstruck. It was into her deep emotions and the song's clever wordplay, depicting a moonlit night of magic, soaring and good music making audiences to hold their breaths in awe.
The travelling spotlight knows no bounds, revealing a much bigger suprise. The moment Park Sunghoon's face flashes before everyone's eyes and bravely wearing his skates, the crowd went silent for a mere five seconds, then an uproar was heard, just as the way Hyejin imagined it to be. She glided to meet him at the main point, flowing and steadfast while purposely trying to hold her giggles.
"You're fans are going nuts, Oppa."
"Believe me. They'll change their perspectives after they'll see your solo. Let's do this, Hyejin-a." Sunghoon whispered back, sounds like a shot in the arm.
"Like the old times?"
"Yeah." Sunghoon heartily laughed. "Just like the old times."
Sunghoon took her hand and they finally come together in music and dance and show the world that dreaming is something that can happen upon a stage. It is upon the broadway-like lights that came to her as a sort of modern rainbow, all excited and drawn in random perfection. Hyejin allowed her spirit to fly to the peak and glide down on her feet without fear, for she knows, no one's going to hurt her anymore.
Then comes the time to finally execute the thrilling and the most dangerous spin. In Sunghoon's eyes exhibits power. Hyejin smiled as good memories of her childhood flash before her eyes.
"On the count of three, I'm going to toss you up. You can count on me. I won't let you fall, just like the old times." Sunghoon whispered the words of reassurance, in readiness to do the act.
In accordance to Lee Heeseung's outro, Hyejin closed her eyes, not in the way of showing fear, but because she's relieving her childhood dream coming into life. No hesitations, just full trust and their strong cousins bond.
"Aigoo. You're heavy now." Sunghoon chuckled after catching her mid air. "I need to scoot out now. I need to see what Jungwon is bragging about you dancing to our song. Take it away."
The crowd's cheer is never-ending. It seems like they have witnessed a performance that would go down in history but they haven't seen nothing yet. Hyejin relieves her tension by puffing some air and she didn't waited for long to hear the next songs intro.
"Forget Me Not" is the song she loved to listen after meeting Yang Jungwon back in their quiet hometown. Down in her bed every night, she went unexpectedly smitten by Yang Jungwon's strong personality, his catty features and most especially, his wide, captivating smile. She was so enchanted that she wanted to know him more and somehow create a connection, that the Enhypen's leader won't forget her even if time passes by. It started as a wish and the next thing she realized, she's dancing into his song and attaining the routines she struggled to do before.
Like the other dancers, Hyejin lives for her art and her body bares the scars and bunions on her toes. It takes great strength to make such activity as graceful as she does, total exertion with a smile that extends all the way to the eyes. Her spontaneous twirls, flawless jumps and jaw dropping spins, in harmony with Enhypen's powerful vocals, made it possible to be stamped as the highlight of the evening's gala.
From up in his high seat not far away from the rink, Jungwon stayed stoic but mindfully steals glances on Hyejin with astounded eyes. She unbelievably looks like she's floating more than anything, like she twirls without effort in a serenity the audience craves. He was lucky to see her danced to their song back then and he was blessed beyond words to see what she can do now. After so many wondrous spins and turns, she made it, exceedingly, right in front of everyone's equally dazed eyes.
It's the silence before the cheer that's always bringing her heart to go off her chest. The cheers rise into the air sounding like the greatest of celebratory firework explosions. It's the kind of cheer someone get when you pop a champagne bottle and the cork flies out, and tiny pieces of confetti burst into the air, creating a festive atmosphere.
Like the way the saying goes, everything that has beginning must come to an end. Her act's done. She succeeded. Her heart is so full that she longed the see the person behind that success. Hyejin turned around to see the Enhypen members slowly moving out of the stage and just in time before Jungwon took his way out, their eyes met, it locked in a way that screams that goes beyond words could explain. In his eyes, she saw it all, all love only for her.
