CHAPTER 16

I never imagined that my heart could feel anything beyond the wounds of betrayal Alex had inflicted, but here I was, sitting across from Lucas Reyes, feeling an unfamiliar warmth. It was strange how easily I could talk to him, how natural it felt to laugh again. For so long, I had built walls around myself, determined to protect the pieces of my heart that still ached, but Lucas’s kindness was beginning to chip away at my defenses.
We met for coffee after work. What was supposed to be a quick meeting to discuss a potential collaboration turned into an evening of conversation that flowed like we’d known each other for years. I found myself talking about things I hadn’t shared with anyone in a long time—my fears, my dreams, and the loneliness that had crept in after the breakup. Lucas listened intently, his eyes filled with understanding rather than pity.
"Aria, you’re stronger than you realize," he said, his voice gentle but firm. "What you’ve accomplished... it’s not just impressive, it’s inspiring."
I looked down at my coffee cup, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks. Compliments always felt like something I didn’t quite know how to accept, especially when they came from someone like Lucas, who seemed to see right through me.
"Thank you, Lucas. That means a lot," I replied, my voice softer than I intended.
As the conversation continued, I found myself opening up even more. It was almost as if I needed to hear these words, to remind myself that I was more than the sum of my past mistakes and heartbreaks. We talked about our careers, our families, and even our thoughts on life and love. Lucas’s perspective was refreshing. He didn’t push or pry; he just let me be, and in that space, I found a sense of comfort that had been missing for a long time.
But as the evening drew to a close, a nagging thought began to tug at the back of my mind. There was something Lucas hadn’t mentioned, something I needed to ask him before I let myself get too close.
"Lucas, can I ask you something?" I began hesitantly.
"Of course, anything," he said, leaning forward slightly, his expression encouraging.
"How do you know Alex?" The question hung in the air between us, heavy with the weight of everything that had happened.
For a moment, Lucas seemed taken aback, but then his face softened. He looked at me with a seriousness that made my heart skip a beat.
"Alex and I go way back," he began slowly. "We were friends in college, but things changed after graduation. I didn’t agree with some of his business practices, and we drifted apart. I haven’t spoken to him in years, not since he became... well, who he is now."
His words hung in the air, and I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of relationship they had shared and why it had ended so abruptly. But I didn’t press further. Lucas seemed sincere, and I wanted to believe that whatever connection he had with Alex was in the past.
"Lucas, I appreciate your honesty," I said after a moment, trying to keep my tone even. "It’s just... after everything that’s happened, I’m trying to be careful about who I let into my life."
"I understand, Aria," he replied, his gaze steady. "I don’t want to cause you any more pain. If you’re not ready, I respect that. But I’d like to get to know you better, if you’ll let me."
There it was, the choice I had been dreading and anticipating at the same time. Trust didn’t come easily to me anymore, but something about Lucas made me want to take that leap, even if just a little. Maybe it was the way he looked at me, with no expectations or demands, just genuine interest and a willingness to understand.
"Let’s take it one step at a time," I said finally, offering him a small smile. "I could use a friend right now."
"Then a friend is exactly what I’ll be," he replied with a warmth that made me feel, for the first time in a long while, that maybe everything would be okay.
As we walked out of the café, the night air cool against my skin, I felt a flicker of hope. Life had thrown so many challenges my way, but maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something new—a chapter in my life that was about more than just survival. It was about living, truly living, and finding the courage to trust again.
But as Lucas walked me to my car, that flicker of hope was accompanied by a whisper of doubt. Could I really trust him? Or was I setting myself up for another heartbreak? Only time would tell, but for now, I was willing to find out.
Just as I was about to get into my car, Lucas paused and looked at me, his expression suddenly serious.
"Aria, there’s something you should know," he said, his voice low and cautious.
My heart skipped a beat as I turned to face him. "What is it, Lucas?"
He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Alex and I... we were more than just friends. We were business partners, and some of the decisions I made back then, well, they might come back to haunt me—and maybe you too."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut, leaving me reeling. All the warmth and comfort I had felt just moments ago were replaced by a cold, creeping fear.
"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Lucas sighed, looking pained. "There are things about Alex that you don’t know, things I didn’t know until it was too late. If he finds out we’ve been in contact..."
He trailed off, leaving the sentence unfinished, but the implication was clear.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I looked into his eyes, searching for answers. But all I found was a reflection of my own uncertainty and the sinking realization that, once again, my past might be catching up with me.
"Lucas, why didn’t you tell me this sooner?" I managed to ask, my voice trembling.
"I didn’t want to scare you off," he admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But I also didn’t want to lie to you. I want to be honest with you, Aria, and I want to help you. But I need you to know that being around me might complicate things more than they already are."
I didn’t know what to say. My mind was racing, trying to process everything he had just told me. It was like the ground beneath my feet was shifting again, and I was desperately trying to find my balance.
"I need some time to think," I said finally, taking a step back.
"Of course," Lucas replied, his voice filled with understanding. "Take all the time you need. I’m here when you’re ready."
With that, he gave me a small nod and walked away, leaving me standing there in the parking lot, alone with my thoughts. As I watched him go, I couldn’t help but wonder if letting Lucas into my life was the right decision—or if it was a mistake I would regret.
I got into my car, my hands shaking as I gripped the steering wheel. I had worked so hard to rise from the ashes of my past, to build a life that was mine and mine alone. But now, it seemed like the ghosts of that past were back, threatening to pull me under once more.
As I drove home, the city lights blurring around me, I knew one thing for sure: whatever came next, I had to be ready. Because this time, the stakes were higher, and I wasn’t just fighting for my future—I was fighting to protect everything I had built.
And no matter what, I wasn’t going to let anyone take that away from me.
