CHAPTER 22
"Strength doesn't come from what you can do; it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't."
The past few weeks had been nothing short of chaotic. Ever since my father’s unexpected return and his revelations about Alex’s manipulations, I had been working nonstop — meeting with my legal team, restructuring company protocols, and strengthening my partnerships. But despite everything, I refused to let the pressure break me.
It wasn’t easy. Every morning, I woke up feeling like I was walking into battle. My inbox was flooded with questions from clients, media outlets hounded me for statements, and social media was buzzing with speculation. Some headlines painted me as a resilient leader rising above adversity — others hinted at scandal, twisting my silence into something more sinister.
I tried not to let it get to me. I reminded myself that I’d built Lyson Company from the ground up, that I knew every corner of my business better than anyone else. Still, the whispers followed me like shadows, feeding my doubts.
"What if they believe Alex?"
"What if my reputation is ruined despite everything I’ve done?"
"What if... I fail?"
I shook off those thoughts as I sat in my office, fingers poised above my laptop keyboard. The city skyline stretched before me through the floor-to-ceiling windows, a view that once filled me with pride. But today, it felt like a distant world — one I was fighting to stay a part of.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Come in,” I called, straightening in my seat.
Jake stepped inside, his face a mix of concern and relief. He held a stack of papers in one hand and his phone in the other. “I’ve got the latest media reports,” he said, placing the documents on my desk. “And... well, you’ve been trending all morning.”
I let out a breath. “Good or bad?”
“Both,” he admitted. “Some outlets are praising you for standing strong through the lawsuit. Others... not so much.”
I nodded, reaching for the papers. The headlines blurred before my eyes:
“Aria Santillan: The Woman Who Defied the Odds”
“Business Queen or Corporate Fraud?”
“From Marketing Maven to Industry Maverick”
“The Untold Story Behind Lyson’s Rising Star”
I clenched my jaw. The media loved to twist narratives, spinning success into scandal and vice versa.
“People are talking about you,” Jake continued. “But the good news is that you’re still in control. Your latest campaign is performing well, and investors are still on board.”
“Thanks, Jake,” I said quietly. “I appreciate you keeping track of everything.”
He gave me a small smile. “You know I’ve got your back.”
As he left, I leaned back in my chair, staring up at the ceiling. I felt exhausted — mentally, emotionally, physically. No matter how hard I tried to stay strong, the pressure kept mounting. It wasn’t just the lawsuit or Alex’s schemes; it was the constant need to prove myself.
For years, I had worked tirelessly to build my company. I sacrificed sleep, skipped social events, and poured every ounce of my energy into making Lyson successful. And now, my achievements were being questioned — as if everything I’d built could be reduced to gossip and suspicion.
I couldn’t let that happen.
You’ve faced worse before, I reminded myself. You didn’t come this far to let someone like Alex destroy everything.
I pushed myself upright and grabbed my phone. If the media wanted a story, I’d give them one — on my own terms.
I spent the rest of the afternoon planning. I scheduled interviews with reputable business magazines and accepted invitations to speak at two upcoming events. If people wanted to know who I really was, I’d show them — not as the woman caught in a scandal, but as the entrepreneur who had built something meaningful from the ground up.
By evening, I was exhausted but satisfied. I had spent hours fine-tuning my responses, ensuring my words reflected my integrity and the values I’d built Lyson upon. I knew the media could twist things, but I refused to hide in the shadows.
Just as I was about to leave my office, my phone buzzed. I frowned when I saw an unknown number flashing on the screen.
“Hello?” I answered cautiously.
“Miss Santillan?” a voice said — a man’s voice, crisp and professional. “This is Marco Delos Reyes from The Daily Insight. I’m calling to ask if you’d like to comment on a developing story involving your company.”
I felt my pulse quicken. “What story?”
“I’d rather discuss this in person,” he said. “But I’ll be upfront with you — our investigation found some questionable financial records tied to Lyson Company. There’s evidence suggesting funds may have been misused or hidden. I wanted to give you a chance to explain before we publish.”
My heart slammed against my ribcage. “That’s impossible,” I said firmly. “Our finances are transparent, and everything is accounted for.”
“I understand,” Marco said evenly. “But the evidence we’ve gathered suggests otherwise. I’d recommend you review your records — there may be something you haven’t seen.”
I gripped the edge of my desk, my fingers digging into the wood. “When are you planning to publish this?”
“Tomorrow morning,” he replied. “I’ll hold off for now, but only if you agree to speak with me.”
“Fine,” I said, my voice colder than I intended. “I’ll meet you first thing tomorrow.”
After hanging up, I stood frozen for a moment. My mind raced through every possibility — was this Alex’s doing? Could someone inside Lyson have betrayed me? Or was this some elaborate manipulation designed to ruin my name just when I was beginning to rebuild my reputation?
I grabbed my bag and headed out of my office, my mind still spinning. As I stepped into the elevator, I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly.
You can fix this, I told myself. You’ve been through worse... and you’ll get through this, too.
But deep down, doubt gnawed at me. Because if Marco’s claims were true, this wasn’t just about my career — it was about my integrity. And that was something I couldn’t afford to lose.
