Chapter Twenty-One - Lucas

Returning from our weekend getaway, the changes were subtle but noticeable. I was still reeling from the closeness I had felt with Mia. Our time together had been transformative, and it had awakened feelings I wasn’t ready to fully confront. Yet, the city, with its relentless pace and pressures, was unforgiving.
I threw myself into work, hoping it would drown out the confusion and new emotions swirling inside me. But no matter how engrossed I became in the minutiae of the business, I found Mia constantly drifting into my thoughts. Her laughter, the warmth of her presence—it was all too vivid to ignore.
Then came the text from Claire: “We need to talk. It’s important.” The last thing I wanted was another confrontation with her, but I knew I had to handle this delicately. I set up a meeting at a café nearby, hoping to resolve this quickly.
Claire was waiting for me when I arrived, her demeanor poised and calculated. As I approached, she looked up with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. I took a seat across from her, trying to mask my unease.
“Claire,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. “What’s this about?”
She sipped her coffee, her eyes sharp and evaluating. “Lucas, I’ve heard some troubling things about you and Mia.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Like what?”
Claire leaned forward, lowering her voice. “People are talking. They say your marriage isn’t what it seems. That it’s just a cover.”
I felt a tight knot form in my stomach. “And what do you think?”
Her gaze remained steady. “I think you’re trying to pull a fast one on everyone. You’ve always been good at hiding your true intentions.”
I exhaled slowly, trying to keep my composure. “This marriage is real, Claire. It’s important for both of us.”
Claire’s smile turned cold. “Really? Because it doesn’t look that way to me. And I’m sure there’s more to this than you’re letting on.”
I clenched my jaw, feeling a surge of frustration. “Why are you so interested in my personal life? This is between me and Mia.”
Claire’s expression hardened. “I’m not just interested. I’m here to warn you. If you’re not honest with me, I might just have to expose what I know.”
Her threat hung heavy in the air. “You think you can intimidate me into giving you what you want?”
Claire’s smile was thin, almost triumphant. “I’m simply giving you a choice. Keep things as they are, or face the consequences. I know how to make this whole arrangement look suspicious.”
I felt a pang of anger but tried to stay calm. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
I left the café feeling uneasy, the threat from Claire weighing heavily on my mind. I knew I had to maintain the facade of our marriage, not just for my sake but for Mia’s as well. The stakes were higher than ever, and the risk of exposure was something I couldn’t afford.
That evening, as I walked through the living room, I noticed Mia working on her laptop, her face illuminated by the screen. She looked both absorbed and frustrated, her shoulders tense. I hesitated before approaching.
“Mia,” I said softly, “working late again?”
She glanced up, her hazel eyes tired but alert. “Yeah, just trying to finish a blog post. It’s about love and self-discovery.”
I sat down beside her, trying to keep my tone casual. “How’s it going?”
She sighed, closing her laptop. “It’s challenging. Sometimes it’s hard to find the right words.”
I could see the frustration on her face. “If you want to talk about it, I’m here.”
Mia’s gaze softened slightly, but there was still a hint of hesitation. “Thanks, Lucas. I appreciate it.”
There was a moment of silence. The weight of unsaid words was palpable. I wanted to ask her about the distance between us, about her blog and what she was writing, but I didn’t want to push her. I was still wrestling with the threat from Claire and wasn’t sure how to handle it without making things worse.
Instead, I decided to focus on her well-being. “How’s everything else going? Outside of work, I mean.”
Mia’s eyes met mine, and she seemed to consider my question for a moment. “It’s been a bit overwhelming. Trying to balance everything, you know?”
I nodded. “I can imagine. If there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know.”
She looked down, fidgeting with the edge of her laptop. “I know you’ve been busy, Lucas. I don’t want to add to your stress.”
I reached out and placed a hand on hers. “It’s not about adding to my stress. It’s about being there for each other. We’re in this together, remember?”
Mia’s eyes lifted to meet mine, and for a moment, there was a glimmer of something unspoken. “I guess you’re right. I’ve just been feeling like I’m on my own sometimes.”
My heart ached at her words. “You’re not on your own, Mia. I may not always show it, but I care about you. More than I thought I would.”
Her gaze lingered on me, and the silence between us felt charged with a new intensity. I wanted to reach out, to bridge the gap that had grown between us, but the fear of vulnerability held me back.
“So,” I said, trying to change the subject, “what’s this post about? Love and self-discovery?”
Mia looked relieved to shift the topic. “It’s about understanding yourself and what love really means. I’ve been writing about my own experiences, how I’ve struggled with finding my place and what it means to truly connect with someone.”
I listened, fascinated by the depth of her insights. “That sounds really personal. I didn’t realize you were sharing so much of yourself.”
She nodded. “It’s not easy. Sometimes it feels like I’m exposing a part of myself that I’m not entirely comfortable with.”
I wanted to offer her more reassurance, but I wasn’t sure how. “I think it’s brave. Sharing your experiences can help others who might be feeling the same way.”
Mia gave a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Thanks. It means a lot to hear that.”
The conversation drifted into more mundane topics, but the weight of our earlier exchange lingered. I could sense that Mia was still holding back, and it made me realize how much I wanted to understand what was really going on in her mind.
