Chapter Twenty-Five: Mia

I needed space. Space to breathe, to think, and to untangle the knot of emotions that had tightened in my chest since Lucas’s confession. I left the mansion behind, driving away from the life that had become increasingly complex. The car ride was silent, filled with the hum of the engine and the rush of passing scenery. My mind, however, was anything but quiet.
Pulling into my parents’ driveway felt like arriving at a safe haven. The house, a warm, inviting structure surrounded by the familiar sights of home, gave me a moment of peace. I parked the car and took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the past few days pressing heavily on me. The security team, always a reminder of my current situation, remained in the background, their presence both comforting and intrusive.
“Mom!” I called out as I entered the house, hoping her embrace could offer some comfort.
Mom appeared almost immediately, her face lighting up with a mix of surprise and concern. “Mia, what a surprise! I didn’t expect you today.”
“I needed to get away,” I said, my voice wavering. “Things have been... complicated.”
Her arms wrapped around me in a warm hug. I melted into it, feeling a wave of relief. “Come on in, sweetheart. Let’s sit down and talk.”
We moved to the living room, where the scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. The room, with its soft, comfortable furniture and the gentle afternoon light streaming through the windows, felt like a cocoon of safety. I sank into the sofa, trying to find solace in the familiar surroundings.
Mom settled beside me, her eyes full of concern. “So, what’s going on, Mia?”
I took a deep breath, struggling to find the right words. “Lucas told me he loves me,” I finally admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. “But I don’t know if he means it or if it’s just part of the arrangement. Everything feels so confusing right now.”
Mom’s eyes softened even more. “I see. And how do you feel about it?”
I felt tears welling up. “I don’t know. I want to believe him, but I’m so unsure. I’ve been thinking about this non-stop, and I can’t tell if my feelings are genuine or if I’m just afraid of being hurt.”
Mom’s touch was gentle as she took my hand. “Mia, you need to listen to your heart. Don’t let fear dictate your decisions.”
“I want to believe that,” I said, feeling the weight of my confusion pressing down. “But everything feels so uncertain. I’m afraid that if I let my guard down, I’ll end up getting hurt.”
Mom’s eyes were filled with empathy. “Love isn’t always clear-cut. Sometimes it’s messy and complicated. If you care about Lucas, you need to give yourself a chance to explore those feelings. Don’t let fear stop you from finding out what could be.”
“I just don’t know if I can trust his feelings or my own anymore,” I said, wiping away a tear. “Everything feels so tangled.”
Mom squeezed my hand reassuringly. “It’s okay to feel that way. Sometimes, it’s about taking the risk and seeing where your heart leads you. You have people who care about you and want to see you happy. Don’t let fear control your decisions.”
I nodded, feeling a bit of the weight lift off my shoulders. “Thank you, Mom. I needed to hear that.”
After our talk, I went to find Jake. My younger brother was home from college, and I was grateful for his presence. I found him in his room, sitting at his desk with textbooks scattered around.
“Hey, Jake,” I said, leaning against the doorframe.
He looked up and smiled. “Hey, Mia. What’s up?”
“I could use a chat,” I said, stepping into his room. “Do you have a moment?”
“Sure,” Jake said, closing his book and giving me his full attention. “What’s going on?”
I sat down on the edge of his bed, feeling the heaviness of my emotions. “Lucas and I had a big conversation. He told me he loves me, but I’m not sure if his feelings are real or if it’s just part of our arrangement.”
Jake’s brows furrowed. “That sounds pretty intense. Have you talked to him about it?”
“I’ve tried,” I said, my frustration bubbling up. “But every time we talk, it just feels like there’s more confusion. I don’t know if I can trust his feelings or even my own.”
Jake leaned back, thinking carefully. “Sometimes, it helps to step back and look at the bigger picture. If Lucas really loves you, he’ll show it through his actions, not just his words.”
“That’s what I’m hoping,” I said, feeling a bit of relief at his perspective. “I just need to give it time and see how things unfold.”
Jake nodded. “Exactly. And remember, you’ve got family who supports you. You don’t have to go through this alone.”
I felt a glimmer of comfort from Jake’s words. “Thanks, Jake. It’s good to know that I have your support.”
Later that evening, I sat alone in my parents’ living room, thinking about the advice Mom and Jake had given me. Their words offered some comfort, but the emotional turmoil still weighed heavily on me. I knew I needed to confront my feelings and make some decisions, but it was challenging when everything felt so uncertain.
Meanwhile, Lucas seemed to be throwing himself into work, his stress and frustration evident whenever we crossed paths. The mansion, once a place of comfort, now felt like a cage, holding me within the confines of my confusion. I needed time to reflect, but the emotional distance between us was growing, and it was hard to ignore.
