Chapter 1: Prom Night

Chapter 1: Prom Night
Madison and Naomi sat side by side at the vanity in their shared bedroom, surrounded by an array of makeup, hair tools, and jewelry. Madison, the older sister, was a vision of elegance in her shimmering silver gown. Her excitement was palpable as she applied the finishing touches to her makeup, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. Naomi, in contrast, wore a simple blue dress that complemented her shy demeanor. She adjusted her glasses nervously, feeling a knot of unease in her stomach.
“Madison, are you sure about this?” Naomi asked, her voice tinged with worry. She tugged at the hem of her dress, feeling out of place.
Madison turned to her sister, her smile radiant.
“Come on, Naomi, it’s prom night! We’ve been looking forward to this for ages. Besides, Calvin will be there with us. We’ll have a blast.”
Naomi sighed, unable to shake the feeling of dread that had settled over her.
“I know, but... The Gold Bachelors will be there too. They always cause trouble. And Rowan...”
Madison’s expression softened as she placed a reassuring hand on Naomi’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about Rowan. Tonight is about having fun. Just stick close to me and Calvin, okay?”
Naomi nodded reluctantly.
“Okay.”
As they finished getting ready, their best friend Calvin arrived, looking dapper in his suit and tie. His eyes widened with admiration as he saw the sisters.
“Wow, you two look amazing!” he exclaimed.
Madison beamed at him.
“Thanks, Calvin. You clean up pretty well yourself.”
Calvin grinned sheepishly, adjusting his glasses.
“Ready to go?”
The sisters nodded, and the trio made their way to the prom venue. The school gymnasium had been transformed into a magical wonderland, with twinkling lights and elaborate decorations creating an enchanting atmosphere. Music filled the air, and students danced and mingled, their laughter echoing through the space.
Madison quickly immersed herself in the festivities, her laughter and grace drawing admiring glances from all around. Naomi, however, felt a pang of anxiety as she noticed The Gold Bachelors lounging near the punch bowl. Rowan, their arrogant leader, stood at the center, exuding an air of confidence and entitlement. His eyes scanned the crowd, finally landing on Madison with a predatory gleam.
“Great,” Naomi muttered under her breath. “Here they come.”
Madison followed Naomi’s gaze and saw Rowan approaching with his entourage. Her heart skipped a beat, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling within her. Rowan was undeniably handsome, but his reputation for cruelty and manipulation was well known.
“Madison,” Rowan greeted smoothly, his voice dripping with charm.
“You look stunning tonight.”
Madison forced a polite smile.
“Thank you, Rowan.”
Rowan’s gaze flickered briefly to Naomi, a hint of disdain in his eyes, before returning to Madison.
“Would you honor me with a dance?”
Naomi’s heart sank. She opened her mouth to protest, but Madison’s excited nod stopped her.
“I’d love to,” Madison said, taking Rowan’s extended hand.
As they moved to the dance floor, Naomi felt a surge of frustration.
“This is a bad idea,” she whispered to Calvin.
Calvin placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“She’ll be okay. Let’s just keep an eye on her.”
The night continued, and the much-anticipated announcement of the Prom King and Queen approached. Madison and Rowan danced gracefully together, their movements synchronized and elegant. Despite her misgivings, Naomi couldn’t deny the chemistry between them. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.
Finally, the moment arrived. The principal took the stage, holding the results of the vote.
“And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for,” he announced.
“This year’s Prom King and Queen are... Rowan McAllister and Madison Parker!”
The crowd erupted in cheers and applause. Madison’s face lit up with pure joy as she was crowned and handed a bouquet of flowers. Rowan accepted his crown with a smug smile, his eyes never leaving Madison.
Naomi clapped along with everyone else, but her heart was heavy with worry. She watched as Rowan whispered something in Madison’s ear, causing her to giggle. Naomi exchanged a worried glance with Calvin, who nodded in silent agreement.
After the crowning ceremony, Rowan led Madison off the stage and towards his group. Naomi’s unease grew as she saw Madison being surrounded by The Gold Bachelors, their leering faces making her skin crawl. She couldn’t hear what they were saying, but Madison’s laughter seemed forced, her eyes darting around nervously.
“Calvin, we need to do something,” Naomi urged, her voice trembling.
Calvin nodded.
“Let’s go over there.”
They made their way through the crowd, but just as they reached the edge of the dance floor, Rowan turned to Madison with a playful smile.
“Madison, how about we continue the celebration at an after-party? My friends and I have something special planned.”
Madison hesitated, glancing towards Naomi and Calvin.
“I don’t know, Rowan. I promised Naomi and Calvin I’d stick with them.”
Rowan’s smile faltered for a moment before he recovered.
“Come on, it’ll be fun. Just a few of us hanging out.”
Naomi stepped forward, her voice firm. “Madison, please don’t go. We can have our own after-party together.”
Madison’s eyes softened as she looked at her sister.
“Naomi, I’ll be fine. It’s just for a little while.”
Naomi felt a surge of frustration and fear. “But you don’t know what they’re capable of! Rowan and his friends are”.
“Enough, Naomi!” Madison snapped, her patience wearing thin.
“I can take care of myself.”
Naomi recoiled, hurt and worried. Before she could say anything else, Rowan gently took Madison’s hand.
“Let’s go, Madison. It’ll be fun, I promise.”
As Madison and Rowan walked towards the exit, The Gold Bachelors following closely behind, Naomi felt a sense of helplessness wash over her. She turned to Calvin, her voice barely above a whisper.
“We have to follow them.”
Calvin nodded, determination in his eyes. “Let’s go.”
They slipped out of the gymnasium, keeping a safe distance behind Rowan’s group. The parking lot was filled with luxury cars, and Rowan’s sleek black van stood out among them. Naomi and Calvin watched as Madison was guided into the van, her nervous smile still in place.
“Come on,” Calvin urged, pulling Naomi towards his car. “We can’t lose them.”
They climbed into Calvin’s old sedan and started the engine. Naomi’s heart pounded as they followed the van through the dark streets of Crestwood. The tension in the car was palpable, each minute stretching into an eternity.
“Where are they taking her?” Naomi wondered aloud, her voice trembling.
Calvin tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“I don’t know, but we’ll find out.”
As they drove, the town’s familiar landmarks became fewer and farther between. The streets grew darker and more desolate, the streetlights casting eerie shadows. Naomi’s unease deepened with every passing moment.
Suddenly, the van took a sharp turn onto a narrow, unmarked road. Calvin followed, his eyes focused on the taillights ahead. The road wound through dense woods, the trees looming like dark sentinels on either side.
“This doesn’t feel right,” Naomi whispered, her voice barely audible.
Calvin nodded. “Stay calm. We’re almost there.”
The road became rougher and more difficult to navigate. Naomi glanced around, realizing they were entering an area she didn't recognize. The van ahead seemed to vanish and reappear among the trees, its taillights flickering like ghostly eyes.
“Calvin, do you know where we are?” Naomi asked, her anxiety rising.
Calvin shook his head, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. “No idea. Just keep an eye on that van.”
They continued down the winding road, but as they rounded a particularly sharp bend, the van suddenly disappeared from view. Calvin pressed down on the gas pedal, speeding up to catch sight of it again. But as they reached the spot where they last saw it, the road split into several narrow paths.
“Which way did they go?” Naomi asked, her voice panicked.
Calvin scanned the paths, each one looking equally dark and foreboding. “I don’t know. They’re gone.”
Naomi’s heart sank. “We lost them. What are we going to do?”
Calvin pulled the car to a stop, turning off the engine. The silence of the night pressed in on them, broken only by the distant hoot of an owl. “Let’s think. Maybe there are some clues around here.”
They got out of the car and began searching the area with their phone flashlights, but the woods offered no hints. The tire tracks from Rowan’s van were indistinguishable from those of other vehicles that had traveled the same paths.
Naomi’s frustration turned to desperation. “We can’t give up, Calvin. We have to find her.”
Calvin nodded. “We won’t give up. Let’s try calling her.”
Naomi quickly dialed Madison’s number, but it went straight to voicemail. She tried again and again, but there was no answer. Tears of frustration welled up in her eyes. “What if something happens to her?”
Calvin pulled her into a comforting hug. “We’ll find her, Naomi. We have to.”
They climbed back into the car, deciding to drive down each path one by one, hoping to catch a glimpse of the van or any signs.
