Chapter 7: The Game.

As I slowly opened my eyes, the sound of the alarm clock piercing through my ears, I knew it was time to start the day. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and swung my legs over the side of the bed, planting my feet firmly on the ground. I stretched my arms above my head, arching my back in a languid stretch, feeling the familiar creaks and groans of my muscles as I came to life.
I shuffled towards the bathroom, still trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. As I entered, I was greeted by the sight of George, my stepdad, standing at the sink, toothbrush in hand, scrubbing away at his teeth. We exchanged morning greetings, our voices still husky from sleep.
"Morning, David," George said, his eyes meeting mine in the mirror. "Sleep well?"
"Yeah, thanks," I replied, trying to sound more alert than I felt. "Just need to wake up a bit more."
I squeezed some toothpaste onto my toothbrush and began to brush my teeth, trying to work up some enthusiasm for the day ahead. As I brushed, I thought about my schedule for the day. I had a game with my team later in the afternoon, and I was determined to do well. We had been practicing for weeks, and I was ready to put my skills to the test.
"Hey, George?" I said, spitting out toothpaste and rinsing my mouth.
"Yeah?" he replied, rinsing his own mouth and turning to face me.
"I've got a game today," I said, trying to sound casual. "It's at 4 pm. Would you be able to come?"
George's face broke out into a smile. "Of course, I'll be there," he said. "I wouldn't miss it for the world. What's the plan for today? Do you need any help getting ready?"
I shook my head, feeling a surge of gratitude towards him. Despite my initial reservations about him, he had been trying hard to be a good stepdad, to support me and be there for me. I appreciated his efforts, even if I still struggled to see him as a father figure.
"Nah, I'm good," I said. "Just need to grab some lunch and head out. But thanks for offering."
George nodded, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "No problem, kiddo. I'm just happy to be able to support you. You know I'm always here for you, right?"
I felt a lump form in my throat as I looked at him. Maybe, just maybe, I could learn to see him as a father figure after all. Maybe he could become a source of support and guidance for me, someone I could turn to in times of need.
"Yeah, I know," I said, my voice a little softer this time. "Thanks, George. That means a lot coming from you."
George smiled again, and we stood there for a moment, the only sound the gentle hum of the bathroom exhaust fan. Then, he clapped me on the back and said, "Alright, kiddo. Let's get moving. You've got a big game to win today."
As we all sat down for breakfast, George seemed to be beaming with pride, his face radiating a warm and enthusiastic glow. He couldn't stop talking about the fact that I had invited him to my game, and he kept repeating it to anyone who would listen.
"Hey, honey, did David tell you that he invited me to his game today?" George asked my mom, a huge grin spreading across his face like a sunrise. "I mean, it's a big deal! David doesn't usually invite me to his games, so I must be doing something right!"
My mom smiled and nodded, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Yes, dear, he told me. That's great! We're all proud of you for being such a supportive stepdad."
George turned to my sister, Emily, who was busy scrolling through her phone, her eyes fixed on the screen with a look of intense concentration. "And Emily, did you hear that David invited me to his game? I'm going to be the coolest stepdad there! I'm going to wear my lucky jersey and everything!"
Emily rolled her eyes good-naturedly, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Yeah, George, we get it. You're going to the game. Congratulations. Try not to embarrass David too much, okay?"
But George didn't seem to notice her sarcasm. He just kept talking, bragging about the fact that I had invited him, and speculating about all the amazing things he would do at the game. "I mean, it's a big deal, guys! David doesn't usually invite me to his games, so I must be doing something right! I'm going to cheer him on so loudly, he'll be able to hear me from the field! I'm going to be the loudest one there, I just know it!"
My mom smiled and patted him on the arm, her touch gentle and reassuring. "Of course you are, dear. David appreciates you, and we're all proud of you for being such a supportive stepdad."
I just shook my head, feeling a bit embarrassed by George's antics, but also happy to see him so happy. He was really trying to be a good stepdad, and it meant a lot to me. I knew he wasn't trying to be overbearing or annoying, he was just excited to be included, and that was something I could definitely relate to.
As we finished up breakfast and started to clear the table, George turned to me and said, "Hey, kiddo, what time do I need to be at the game again? I don't want to miss a single minute of it!"
"It's at 4 pm," I replied, trying to sound casual despite my growing excitement. "But you can come a bit earlier if you want to get a good seat. Just don't forget to wear your lucky jersey, okay?"
George nodded enthusiastically, his eyes shining with excitement. "Absolutely, I'll be there with bells on! I'm going to cheer you on so loudly, David, you'll be able to hear me from the field! I'm going to be the loudest one there, I just know it!"
