Chapter 10: Busted.

As we walked into the house, George's infectious enthusiasm finally started to rub off on Emily, and she cracked a small smile, her eyes sparkling with a hint of amusement. "Hey, Mom!" we chimed in unison, greeting our mother with a warm hug, the tension from earlier slowly dissipating.
Mom's face lit up with a warm smile, her eyes shining with love and concern. "Hey, kids! How was the game?" She looked at me expectantly, her gaze searching for details, but George jumped in before I could answer, his voice booming with excitement.
"David was absolutely fantastic, honey! He played the best game I've ever seen him play. His defensive skills are top-notch, and he's got a real talent for the sport. I mean, that tackle he made in the second half? Unbelievable!" George beamed with pride, his eyes shining with admiration, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude towards him.
Emily rolled her eyes good-naturedly, a hint of a smile still playing on her lips. "Yeah, yeah, we get it. David's a superstar." She teased, but I could tell she was happy for me, her voice laced with a warmth that only came from sibling love.
Mom laughed, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Well, I'm glad to hear that. I'm proud of you, sweetie." She turned to George and they shared a passionate kiss, making me feel uncomfortable, but also happy to see them so in love.
As they pulled away, I headed straight to my room, pulling out my phone and typing out a text to Dad, my mind racing with thoughts and emotions.
"DAD, I WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED IN YOU TODAY, NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR ARGUMENT WITH EMILY, BUT BECAUSE YOU BLEW YOUR COVER BY SHOWING UP, NOW GIVING EMILY A REASON TO FILE A CHARGE AGAINST YOU." I hesitated for a moment before hitting send, my heart racing with anticipation.
Just as I was about to put my phone away, it buzzed with an incoming text from Dad, his response swift and apologetic.
"DAVID, I KNOW I SCREWED UP. I WASN'T THINKING. BUT YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE ME, I'M DOING ALL OF THIS FOR YOU AND EMILY. I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT YOU BOTH." His words were laced with a desperation, a plea for understanding, and I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt.
"WE'LL TALK ABOUT THIS LATER, DAD. JUST BE CAREFUL, OKAY?" I replied, my voice firm but gentle, trying to convey a sense of calm and reason.
I put my phone away, feeling a sense of unease, my mind racing with thoughts and emotions. I knew that this was far from over, and I couldn't help but wonder what would happen next, the uncertainty hanging in the air like a challenge.
I spun around, surprised to see Emily standing behind me, her eyes blazing with a mix of anger, accusation, and hurt. "I would've known it, you were in contact with Dad," she said, her voice low and even, but laced with a hint of betrayal and disappointment. "You were the one that invited him to the game today." Her words hung in the air like a challenge, daring me to deny it.
I felt a surge of defensiveness, my mind racing for an explanation, a justification for my actions. "What are you doing in my room without knocking?" I asked angrily, trying to divert attention from the real issue, trying to shift the focus away from my own guilt.
Emily shrugged off my question, her eyes never leaving mine, her gaze piercing and intense. "That's not the point, David. The point is that you're in contact with Dad, despite the court's ruling. Despite everything he's done to us." Her voice was laced with a deep-seated pain, a pain that I knew I had contributed to.
I stood my ground, refusing to back down, refusing to admit my mistake. "It's none of your concern, Emily. I can handle my own relationships." I tried to sound confident, but I knew I was on shaky ground.
Emily's eyes flashed with anger, her face reddening with indignation. "None of my concern? You're my brother, David. And Dad's behavior affects me just as much as it affects you. We're in this together, remember? We're supposed to be a team." Her words were laced with a sense of betrayal, a sense of hurt.
I sighed, feeling a sense of frustration, feeling like I was trapped in a corner. "Look, Emily, I know you're upset, but I can handle this. I'm not going to let Dad's behavior dictate my life." I tried to sound calm, but I knew I was failing.
Emily's voice rose, her words tumbling out in a passionate torrent. "That's exactly what you're doing, David. You're letting him manipulate you, just like he always does. And what about the court's ruling? He's not supposed to be in contact with us. He's not supposed to be near us." Her eyes were blazing with anger, her face set in a determined mask.
I shook my head, feeling a sense of desperation, feeling like I was running out of options. "I know, okay? But I can handle it. I'm not going to let him hurt me." I tried to sound confident, but I knew I was lying.
Emily's eyes searched mine, looking for answers, looking for a glimmer of hope. "Why are you doing this, David? Why are you risking everything? Why are you putting us in danger?" Her voice was laced with a deep-seated fear, a fear that I knew I had caused.
I hesitated, unsure of how to respond, unsure of how to justify my actions. I knew I couldn't tell her the truth - that I was trying to protect her, that I was trying to keep Dad's secrets safe. So I just shook my head, feeling a sense of defeat, feeling like I was trapped in a web of my own making. "I don't know, Emily. Just leave it alone, okay?" I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper.
