Chapter 9 The Price of Perfection

After that car ride, everything just go back to normal. It's like the car ride never even happened because Lucian is in his usual self again. The circus tent was alive with the vibrant colors of the evening performance, the air thick with excitement and the scent of popcorn and cotton candy. The audience was a sea of eager faces, their eyes focused on the ring where the night’s final act—a breathtaking high-wire performance—was about to begin.
Emily stood at the edge of the performance area, her heart pounding as she watched the performers prepare. The high-wire artists, a pair of siblings known for their flawless acrobatics, stretched and practiced their routines. Tonight was supposed to be the highlight of the show, a grand finale that would leave the audience breathless.
But as the performers took their positions, something went horribly wrong.
The trapeze artist, Maria, missed her grip on the trapeze bar and plummeted towards the safety net below. The net, which had been carelessly set up by an inexperienced crew member, was not properly secured, and Maria fell through the net onto the ground with a sickening thud. The audience gasped in horror as the performance came to a screeching halt.
Emily’s heart raced as she watched Lucian Blackwood leap into action. His face was a mask of controlled fury as he strode across the tent, his mismatched eyes blazing with a cold, dangerous light. The performers and crew scattered, their faces pale with fear as they tried to tend to Maria’s injuries.
Lucian approached the scene with a commanding presence, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the damage. He crouched beside Maria, his gaze sweeping over her unconscious form. There was no hint of the charm he used with Emily or the warmth he pretended to show others. In this moment, Lucian was a ruthless figure, unyielding and stern.
“Get her out of here,” Lucian’s voice cut through the chaos, his tone cold and commanding. “And make sure the safety net is fixed properly. We cannot afford such mistakes.”
The doctor and crew scrambled to follow his orders, and the tent fell into an uneasy silence. Lucian’s gaze swept over the remaining performers and crew, his eyes like a predator surveying his prey.
He stepped closer to Emily, his gaze piercing as if he could see right through her. “What did you think of that performance, Emily?”
Emily took a step back, her voice trembling as she spoke. “It was... awful. I can’t believe Maria fell.”
Lucian’s eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, his gaze was almost hypnotic. “It was a failure. And failures have consequences.”
Emily shivered under the weight of his words. “But Maria’s hurt. Don’t you care about what happened to her?”
Lucian’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Of course I care. But not enough to let sentiment cloud my judgment. Perfection is the only thing that matters here. Anything less is unacceptable.”
Emily’s eyes widened as she took in the harshness of his words. “That’s not right. People aren’t just tools for you to use and discard.”
Lucian’s smile widened, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous amusement. “And what do you propose we do instead? Should we coddle them? Hold their hands? This is a world where only the strongest survive.”
He turned away from her, his demeanor chilling as he walked towards the exit of the tent. “If you cannot handle that reality, perhaps you should reconsider your place here.”
Emily stood there, her heart pounding as she struggled to process the enormity of what she had witnessed. Lucian’s ruthless demeanor was a stark contrast to the charismatic figure she had seen in the limousine and the enticingly enigmatic persona he put on for the public. This was the true face of Lucian Blackwood, and it was both terrifying and mesmerizing.
Determined to confront him, Emily followed him out of the tent and down the dimly lit corridor that led to his private quarters. Her steps echoed ominously in the silence, and she could feel the weight of the evening’s events pressing down on her. She reached the ornate door to Lucian’s room and knocked sharply.
“Enter,” came Lucian’s voice from inside, smooth and inviting but with an underlying edge that made Emily’s heart race.
She opened the door and stepped into the room, her eyes taking in the opulence of the space. The room was adorned with rich fabrics and dark woods, a stark contrast to the stark reality of the performance she had just witnessed. Lucian was seated behind a large desk, his fingers steepled as he regarded her with a cool, calculating gaze.
“What can I do for you, Emily?” he asked, his tone a velvety purr that sent a shiver down her spine.
Emily took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. “I need to talk to you about what happened out there. The way you handled Maria’s injury—it was... brutal.”
Lucian’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. “Brutal? Or simply realistic?”
Emily’s gaze met his, unflinching despite the chill that ran through her. “You were cold and ruthless. Maria was hurt, and all you could think about was how it reflected on the circus.”
Lucian’s smile was a dangerous curve of his lips. “The circus is a place of high stakes and higher expectations. Compassion has no place in the pursuit of perfection.”
Emily’s voice was steady, though her heart pounded in her chest. “That’s not how you should treat people. They’re not just cogs in a machine.”
Lucian stood slowly, his movements deliberate and imposing. “And what would you have me do? Reprimand those who fail? Offer them solace? In this world, weakness is punished, not rewarded.”
He walked around the desk, his eyes locked on hers with a predatory gleam. “Are you saying that I should soften my methods, Emily?”
Emily took a step back, her breath catching in her throat. “I’m saying that you’re being unfair. You can’t just discard people when they make mistakes.”
Lucian’s smile grew wider, almost seductive in its intensity. “And what if I told you that it’s not about fairness? It’s about maintaining control, ensuring that the circus continues to thrive despite the occasional failure.”
He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming as he leaned in slightly. “But perhaps you’re right. Perhaps there is a different way to handle these situations.”
Emily’s eyes widened as he moved even closer, the space between them shrinking to an almost unbearable closeness. “What are you talking about?”
Lucian’s voice was a low, sultry whisper. “I’m saying that there are many ways to approach a problem. Some are more direct than others.”
He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against her arm. The touch was both intimate and intimidating, and Emily shivered under the contact. “But you must understand that my methods are my own. I do not follow the same rules as others.”
Emily pulled back slightly, her heart racing. “This isn’t about your methods. It’s about how you treat people.”
Lucian’s eyes glittered with a dark amusement. “Is that what you believe? That I am heartless and unfeeling?”
He took another step closer, his smile a mix of charm and menace. “Perhaps you should reconsider what you know about me, Emily. The rumors you’ve heard are just that—rumors.”
Emily’s cheeks flushed as she recalled the whispers she had heard about Lucian. “You mean the rumors about you being a monster? Eating flesh? I didn’t believe them, but...”
Lucian’s eyes flashed with a dangerous light. “Ah, so you did hear those stories. And did you believe them?”
Emily hesitated, her face turning red with embarrassment. “Some of them. I thought maybe there was some truth to them.”
Lucian’s smile was both enticing and frightening. “And now? Do you still think I’m a monster?”
Emily swallowed hard, her eyes meeting his with a mixture of fear and defiance. “I think you’re complex. But I’m not afraid of you.”
Lucian’s smile widened, a dark satisfaction in his eyes. “Are you sure about that, Emily?”
Before she could respond, Lucian moved swiftly, closing the door behind her and locking it with a soft click. The sound echoed ominously in the room, and Emily’s eyes widened as she realized she was now alone with him, with no easy way out.
Lucian leaned against the desk, his gaze fixed on her with a predatory interest. “It seems we have some privacy now. How do you intend to use it?”
Emily’s heart raced as she looked around the room, her mind racing with thoughts of escape. “Why did you lock the door?”
Lucian’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous curiosity. “I wanted to ensure that we have a proper conversation without interruptions.”
He took a step closer, his presence overpowering as he leaned in, his breath warm against her skin. “But perhaps you’re right. Maybe there is more to me than what you see on the surface.”
Emily’s breath caught in her throat as she looked up at him, her fear mingled with a reluctant fascination. “What do you want from me?”
Lucian’s smile was a mix of charm and menace. “I want you to see beyond the rumors, to understand the reality of who I am.”
He moved even closer, his eyes locked on hers with an intense, almost hypnotic gaze. “But first, you must be willing to confront the darkness that lies beneath the surface.”
Emily took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. “And if I refuse?”
Lucian’s smile was a dangerous, seductive curve of his lips. “Then you will remain in the dark, unable to see the full picture of what you have stumbled into.”
He leaned in, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered. “But if you are brave enough to face it, you might find something far more intriguing than the rumors suggest.”
Emily shivered at his touch, her heart racing as she looked up at him. “I’m not afraid of you.”
Lucian’s eyes glittered with a dark satisfaction. “We shall see, Emily. We shall see.”
He took a step back, his eyes never leaving hers as he moved back to his desk. “For now, you have some time to think. When you’re ready to confront the truth, I will be here.”
Emily stood there, her heart pounding as she tried to make sense of the situation. The room was filled with a heavy silence.
