Chapter 15: The Scare

James was in his office, going through his emails when his phone buzzed. He picked it up and saw a message from Emily.
Emily: "Hey James, I’m not feeling well today. I think I’m coming down with something. I’m going to work from home."
James frowned, concern etched on his face. He quickly typed a response.
James: "I’m sorry to hear that. Please take care of yourself. Let me know if you need anything."
Emily: "Thanks, James. I’ll try to rest and get better."
James put his phone down, his thoughts lingering on Emily. She rarely took sick days, and for her to feel unwell enough to stay home meant she must be really sick. He couldn’t focus on his work, his mind constantly drifting back to her.
As the day progressed, he kept checking his phone, hoping for an update from Emily. By lunchtime, he couldn’t take it anymore. He decided to call her.
“Hey, Emily,” he said when she answered, her voice weak.
“Hi, James,” she replied, trying to sound cheerful but failing.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, worry evident in his tone.
“Not great, to be honest,” Emily admitted. “I have a fever and I’m just really tired.”
James’s heart clenched. “Do you need anything? Medicine, soup, anything at all?”
“No, I think I’m okay for now,” Emily said. “I just need to rest.”
James was not convinced. “I’m coming over after work,” he said firmly. “I’ll bring you some soup and anything else you might need.”
Emily started to protest, but James cut her off. “No arguments. I’ll be there around six. Get some rest until then, okay?”
Emily sighed but relented. “Okay, James. Thank you.”
---
True to his word, James left the office early and stopped by a local deli to pick up some chicken soup and fresh bread. He also grabbed a few other essentials he thought Emily might need: orange juice, medicine, and some comforting snacks.
When he arrived at Emily’s apartment, he knocked gently on the door. Emily opened it, looking pale and exhausted. Despite her condition, she managed a weak smile.
“Hi, James,” she said softly.
“Hey, Emily,” he replied, his voice filled with concern. “You look terrible.”
Emily chuckled weakly. “Thanks, I feel terrible.”
James stepped inside and set the bags on the kitchen counter. “I brought you some supplies,” he said, pulling out the items one by one. “Soup, bread, orange juice, medicine, and a few snacks. I hope you like them.”
Emily’s eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you so much, James. You didn’t have to do all this.”
James shook his head. “I wanted to. Now, why don’t you go lie down while I heat up the soup?”
Emily nodded and made her way to the couch, wrapping herself in a blanket. James busied himself in the kitchen, heating the soup and pouring a glass of orange juice.
When he brought the tray over, Emily tried to sit up, but James gently stopped her. “No, you stay comfortable. I’ll feed you.”
Emily’s eyes widened in surprise. “James, you don’t have to—”
“I want to,” he said firmly. “You’ve taken care of me countless times. Let me take care of you.”
Emily’s eyes softened, and she nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
James carefully spooned the soup into her mouth, watching her closely. “How’s the soup?” he asked.
“It’s perfect,” Emily replied, her voice a bit stronger. “Just what I needed.”
James continued to feed her, feeling a sense of satisfaction as she slowly regained some of her strength. Once she had finished the soup, he handed her the glass of orange juice.
“Drink this. It’ll help you stay hydrated.”
Emily took a few sips and then leaned back, her eyes heavy with fatigue. “Thank you, James. You’re being so sweet.”
James smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You mean a lot to me, Emily. I hate seeing you like this.”
Emily’s eyes fluttered shut, and she mumbled, “You mean a lot to me too, James.”
James watched her as she drifted off to sleep, feeling a rush of emotions. Seeing her so vulnerable made him realize just how deeply he cared for her. He sat by her side, holding her hand, and silently vowed to take care of her until she was back on her feet.
---
For the next few days, James visited Emily every evening after work. He brought her meals, helped her with chores, and made sure she was comfortable. Each night, he stayed until she fell asleep, watching over her with a protective gaze.
One evening, as Emily started to feel better, she sat up on the couch, looking much more like her usual self. “James, I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done,” she said, her eyes filled with gratitude.
James shook his head. “You don’t need to thank me, Emily. I’m just glad you’re feeling better.”
Emily reached out and took his hand. “No, really. You’ve been amazing. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
James squeezed her hand gently. “You don’t have to do anything alone, Emily. I’m always here for you.”
Emily looked at him, her eyes shining with emotion. “I know. And I’m so grateful for that. You’ve shown me how much you care, and it means the world to me.”
James felt a lump in his throat. “I care about you more than I can put into words, Emily. Seeing you sick made me realize just how important you are to me.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears. “You’re important to me too, James. More than you know.”
They sat in silence for a moment, their emotions raw and unspoken words hanging in the air. Finally, Emily broke the silence, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this close to anyone before.”
James leaned in, his heart pounding. “Me neither, Emily. You’ve become such a big part of my life. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Emily looked into his eyes, her gaze steady and filled with affection. “You don’t have to worry about that, James. I’m not going anywhere.”
James felt a surge of relief and joy. “Good, because I don’t want to imagine a life without you.”
---
As the days passed, Emily continued to recover, her strength slowly returning. James stayed by her side, supporting her and making sure she had everything she needed. Their bond grew even stronger, and they found themselves sharing more personal stories and dreams for the future.
One evening, as they sat on the couch, Emily turned to James, a thoughtful expression on her face. “James, can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” James replied, looking at her with curiosity.
“Why did you go to such lengths to take care of me?” she asked softly. “I mean, I know we’re close, but you went above and beyond.”
James took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. “Because I care about you, Emily. More than just as a friend or colleague. Seeing you sick made me realize how much I truly love you. I couldn’t stand the thought of you being in pain and not doing everything I could to help.”
Emily’s eyes widened in surprise, her heart racing. “You...you love me?”
James nodded, his gaze steady. “Yes, Emily. I love you. I’ve known for a while now, but it took seeing you like this to fully understand how deep my feelings go.”
Emily felt a rush of emotions, tears filling her eyes. “James, I love you too. I’ve been scared to admit it, but I can’t deny it any longer.”
James’s heart swelled with happiness. “Emily, you’ve made me the happiest man in the world.”
They leaned in and shared a tender kiss, their hearts beating in unison. As they pulled away, Emily rested her head on James’s shoulder, feeling a sense of peace and contentment.
“I’m so glad we found each other,” she whispered.
“Me too,” James replied, wrapping his arms around her. “We’re going to be okay, Emily. We’ll face everything together.”
Emily smiled, feeling safe and loved. “Yes, we will. Together.”
As they sat there, holding each other, they knew that their love had been tested and had emerged stronger than ever. They were ready to face whatever challenges came their way, confident in their bond and the love that had grown between them.
Their journey together was just beginning, and they looked forward to every moment, knowing that they had found something truly special in each other.
