CHAPTER FORTY THREE: New guy
MIRA
I lied.
I lied when I make it look like I didn’t want to see Ocean that day at the party. I lied when I said that I will only talk to him so we can end it all. I want him back. I was hoping for a chance that he will ask me to take him back because I was so ready to say yes. I was ready for our fresh start. I was ready to defend his name once again, even if it means I’ll be painting mine bad.
F*ck it.
My new hobby is to look out the window and bring my taser everywhere I go. The b*tch got inside my head. I don’t even feel safe with all the guards I have.
I’m worried about Jess. That poor girl, dragged inside this mess. I can’t imagine the amount of fear she’s feeling right now.
Someone’s knocking so I opened the door. It’s one of the new guards who arrived here yesterday. “Ma’am? There’s someone on the phone for you.” I smiled.
I’m smiling at them every time I see them because I don’t want them to kill me. I need to start to be nice to everyone because you will never know who’s a murderer. “Yeah. I’ll be there in a minute.” I close the door.
I rush to pack my taser inside the pocket of my jacket, then I went down to answer the phone. “Hello? Who is this?”
Whoever this is, it sounds like she. She squeaks excitedly before speaking. “Hello! Oh my god!”
“Jess? How are you? Are you safe? Wait, don’t tell me you’re already back? You know it’s not safe yet.” I recognized her voice when she squeaks again. I don’t know what’s with her and mouse sound, but what ever. I’m just happy to know that she’s still alive.
“Actually, I’m at the city right—“
“What!?” Is she kidding? “I told you to get away here, not be here. Oh my god, you are a headache.” I’m trying to save my life too, Jess. What is she thinking to go back here? Is she suicidal? “You’re going to tell me where you are right now and I’m sending a car over to take you somewhere far from here.” I’m about to call the new guy when she shouted no over the phone.
“Don’t worry, okay? I’m somewhere safe with someone keeping me safe. So, no worries.”
Someone’s keeping her safe, huh? Is she sure that this person is really safe? Or maybe it’s one of Denise’s plan to get someone near her so no one would be suspicious if Jess dies? “I’m going to need this person’s name. Right now.” The new guys is standing over the corner to guard me. I signaled him to get me a pen and a paper. He’s quick.
The other guards are guarding the gate, fence, and other area where people can enter. I know it’s too much, but you can’t really blame me. There is an obsessed celebrity with lots of connection who is planning to kill me, Jess, and maybe the Detective too.
“His name is musc— It’s Rufus.”
“That’s it? I need a full name. Come on, don’t let your guards down.”
“That’s all I know about him, but he works for an Old man named Mr. Bartley. He’s good.”
“Good with what?” I giggled. I let her read my sarcastic tone.
“Oh— shut up. I’m hanging up, okay? Just want to let you know that I’m safe. Still breathing. See you soon, eh?”
I smiled, even she couldn’t see it. “Yes. See you soon.” Then she hangs up.
I sighed in relief. I know we’re still in danger, but at least we’re still. Not that I’m glad that we are in danger, but because it means that we’re still alive. If Denise is walking free, and we’re not in danger anymore, it means we are dead. We will only be free if the crazy’s behind bars.
My forehead feels light, not because of relief but because it’s so quiet. It’s 2pm. “They must be changing shifts.” Maybe it’s really quiet down here when they are changing shifts. I don’t really know how they change shift because I’m always upstairs, locked inside my room.
“New guy?” I called. No one’s answering. “Hey, where is every one?” Still, no answer.
I walk towards the kitchen. My footsteps are light, incase someone uninvited is inside. I took my taser out of my pocket. “New guy? Hello?” I hold the taser tight as I’m ready to use it. “F*ck you!” I swing the taser and closed my eyes while I taser a figure in front or me.
Instead of passing out, he just took the taser out of my hand. “Ma’am are you okay? I was told that we’re changing shifts, then I heard you calling.”
I open my eyes. “Sh*t.” What’s happening to me? Tasing random people inside the house? “I’m so sorry.” I tap his chest. “So sorry.”
He saw that my knees are about to fall so he offered some assistance. He guided me into the living room and sat me in the sofa. “My apologies, ma’am.”
I waved my hand ‘no’ “It is not your fault. I’m sorry. Can I get that back?” I pointed at the taser, he handed it back to me. “You know with the situation. It’s hard to trust people.” I explained.
“I understand ma’am. With my job, I was tasered a lot.” He laughs.
I never saw him before, he must be one of the new guys my head of security hired. “Are you in the same agency as the head of my security?”
Maybe I should talk to him for minutes, nothing’s harmful with talking to an employee. Also, I want him to feel that I’m genuinely sorry for tasing him.
“Yes ma’am.” He answered.
“Where did you work- I mean, what’s your project before me?”
“With a celebrity. That’s where they always assign me.”
I pointed at the part where I tased him. “I’m sorry about that. I really do.”
He just smiled, then nods. “It’s part of the job ma’am.”
“What is your name?” I ask him. He’s got a tattoo on his neck, and I’m trying my best not to stare at it for long.
“My name is Tale.”
I reached my hand for a shake hand. “I’m Mira. Nice that you are working for me.” Before I leave the living room to go upstairs, I look at him.
“You’ve got a nice name, Tale. Why don’t you come upstairs with me?” I ask him.
He didn’t give me a yes or a no, or a signal. He just walk towards me.
We went inside the room, and the first thing I do is to close the curtains. “So, tell me. Which Celebrity did you work for?” I walk towards him, he did the same.
He’s touching my face very light, very slow. “Do you really want to know that?” His voice is deep, and his eyes are green. Maybe for a moment, he will make me forget the trouble I’m in.
“I would love to. So, I will know who to look out for.” I teasingly said. He’s still touching my face, but his hand are getting heavy.
“Honestly, I’m still working for her. I’m working on a very special project.” I hold his hand, trying to get it out of my face.
He’s fast with the aggressive part of this. I want to take it all slow. “Really? Who is it?”
He placed his hands on the both side of my face, then he squish it. Slowly, he pushes me on the bed.
“We’re going too fast.” I chuckle nervously. What’s up with him? “Hey. I said we’re going too fast.”
He pushed her forehead on mine. His hands are still on its position. “I work with…” He chuckles. “Your friend, Denise.”
My eyes widened as his right hand covers my face, he place his left hand on my neck. He’s choking me, and he’s above me. I kick, and use my hand to get him off me.
I’m running out of breath. I can’t even see his face because of his hands. “Ple—“ I whispered, nearly completing the word.
My head started to feel light, so is my chest. Then I decided to just let it go.
The last thing I hear is his words. “You are my project.”
DENISE
I hate wearing hoodies. It’s hot and I’m sweating a lot.
Finally, the door opens. “Finally! Don’t you know how hot it is outside?” I kind of miss the storm.
“I don’t care. Just get inside before the guys come back.”
I rolled my eyes on him. He’s rude, but good at his job.
I went straight to Mira’s room, then I saw her lifeless, lying on her bed. I walk towards her. “You poor b*tch.” I hold her face, then squish it.
I look at Tale. He’s tired of seeing me, and I know that he just want to finish his job, get his money, and get out of here.
“Don’t worry. One more person, then we’re good.” He scoffs. I rolled my eyes. He never appreciate my comfort, I guess he’s just a complete asshole with no heart. “There you are.” I saw her phone under her bed. It must’ve fell when she struggled.
I used her face for facial recognition. “I’m in.” I went to the setting to remove the passcode. “Come on.” I smiled at Tale, then we rush to get out of the place.
We’re driving out of the place. “You see?” He pointed at the car. “You spent too much time inside. If you do this solo, you will get caught.” He smacked the stirring wheel.
I was about to complain about his attitude when he blasted a music. I rolled my eyes.
“What an asshole.”
