Chapter 3: Escape from School

Tommy's heart pounded as he and Sarah clung to the edge of their desks, watching the chaos unfold around them. Miss Green, now fully transformed with those empty, soulless eyes, had been taken away, but the fear in the classroom lingered like a dark cloud.
Principal Anderson’s voice crackled over the PA system. “Attention, students. Please remain calm and stay in your classrooms. We are experiencing a temporary issue, but everything is under control. Teachers, please keep your students inside until further notice.”
But everything was far from under control. Outside the classroom, muffled shouts and hurried footsteps echoed through the hallways. Tommy glanced at Sarah, whose face was pale with fear.
“What do we do?” she whispered, her eyes wide.
Tommy took a deep breath. “We need to get out of here. It’s not safe.”
Sarah nodded, and they both stood up, moving quietly to the door. Tommy peeked into the hallway. Students and teachers were running in all directions, the fear palpable. Some of the adults had the same vacant eyes as Miss Green, moving with that same eerie, mechanical precision.
“We have to find a way out,” Tommy said, grabbing Sarah’s hand. “Stay close.”
They slipped into the hallway, weaving through the panicked crowd. Tommy’s mind raced, trying to remember the quickest route to the exit. The fire alarm blared, adding to the confusion and chaos.
As they turned a corner, they spotted Principal Anderson. He was trying to direct students to safety, but Tommy could see something was wrong. The principal’s movements were becoming slower, more erratic. His usually calm demeanor was replaced by a glazed, unfocused look.
“Please, everyone stay calm!” Principal Anderson’s voice was strained. “We need to—” He stumbled, clutching his head, and then collapsed to the floor.
“Run!” Tommy shouted, pulling Sarah along as Principal Anderson began to rise, his eyes now cold and empty.
They sprinted down the hallway, dodging other students and teachers. Tommy’s heart raced as he saw more and more people succumbing to the strange illness. The air was filled with cries of fear and confusion.
They reached the main entrance, only to find it blocked by a group of “sick” teachers. Tommy’s mind raced, looking for another way out. He spotted the emergency exit at the end of the hallway and pointed. “That way!”
They bolted towards the door, pushing past terrified classmates. Just as they reached the exit, a loud crash echoed through the hallway, and the fire alarm was joined by the screeching of breaking glass.
Tommy pushed the door open, and they burst out into the cool, autumn air. The schoolyard was a scene of chaos, with students running in all directions. Some were being chased by the “sick” teachers, who moved with a relentless, unfeeling determination.
“We have to get home,” Tommy said, breathless. “Stick together and avoid the sick people.”
Sarah nodded, her hand gripping Tommy’s tightly. They made their way across the schoolyard, keeping to the edges and staying as far away from the infected as possible.
As they reached the street, they paused to catch their breath. Tommy looked around, trying to get his bearings. The usually quiet neighborhood was now filled with the sounds of panic. People were fleeing their homes, and the eerie figures of the infected could be seen stumbling through yards and streets.
“This way,” Tommy said, pointing towards a side street that would lead them home. “It’s quicker and we can avoid the main roads.”
They hurried down the street, sticking close to the houses and trying to stay out of sight. Tommy’s mind raced with thoughts of his parents, hoping they were safe at home.
“Tommy, look!” Sarah pointed to a house where a woman was stumbling out the front door, her eyes vacant and her movements jerky.
“Keep moving,” Tommy urged, pulling Sarah along. “We can’t stop.”
They rounded a corner and finally saw their street up ahead. Tommy felt a surge of relief, but it was quickly dashed when he saw more infected wandering the area.
“Almost there,” he said, trying to sound confident.
As they approached Tommy’s house, they saw his mom standing on the porch, looking frantically up and down the street. When she spotted them, she ran towards them, her face a mixture of relief and fear.
“Tommy! Sarah! Thank goodness you’re safe!” she cried, pulling them into a tight embrace.
“Mom, it’s happening everywhere,” Tommy said, his voice shaking. “We have to get inside.”
She nodded, leading them back to the house. “Your dad is on his way home. We’re going to lock the doors and stay together.”
They hurried inside, locking the doors and windows. Tommy’s mom quickly checked them over for any signs of injury or illness, her hands trembling.
“What’s happening, Mom?” Tommy asked, his voice filled with fear.
“I don’t know, sweetheart,” she replied, pulling him close. “But we’re going to stay safe. Your dad will be here soon.”
They sat in the living room, the sounds of chaos outside muffled by the walls of their home. Tommy’s mom turned on the television, searching for news. The screen showed footage of similar scenes from other towns, with reporters urging people to stay indoors and avoid anyone showing symptoms.
Tommy held Sarah’s hand, trying to be brave for both of them. “We’ll be okay,” he whispered. “We just have to stick together.”
Minutes felt like hours as they waited for Tommy’s dad. Finally, they heard the sound of his car pulling into the driveway. Tommy’s mom ran to the door, unlocking it and letting him in.
“Thank God you’re home,” she said, hugging him tightly.
Tommy’s dad kissed her forehead and then turned to Tommy and Sarah. “Are you two okay?”
They nodded, and Tommy’s dad sighed with relief. “Good. We’re going to stay inside and wait this out. Whatever this is, we’ll get through it together.”
They spent the rest of the day fortifying the house, making sure all the doors and windows were secure. They gathered supplies, setting up a small area in the living room with blankets and pillows, turning it into a makeshift safe zone.
As night fell, the sounds outside grew quieter, but the tension remained. Tommy lay next to Sarah, their hands still clasped together. He listened to his parents whispering in the kitchen, their voices filled with worry and uncertainty.
“We’ll get through this,” Tommy whispered to Sarah, trying to sound confident. “We have to.”
Sarah nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I’m scared, Tommy.”
“Me too,” he admitted. “But we have each other. We’ll be okay.”
And so, as the darkness settled over Riverwood, Tommy and Sarah clung to the hope that together, they could face whatever horrors awaited them in this new, terrifying world.
