Chapter 7: Exploring the Woods

The morning sun filtered through the thick canopy of trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. Tommy and Sarah stood at the edge of the clearing, their backpacks slung over their shoulders and a sense of adventure in their hearts. It was time to explore the woods and see what they could find to help their family.
“Ready, Sarah?” Tommy asked, adjusting his backpack straps.
Sarah nodded, her eyes wide with excitement and a bit of nervousness. “Ready. Let’s see what we can find.”
They set off into the woods, the air cool and fresh around them. The forest was alive with the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the breeze. It felt good to be outside, away from the constant worry that had gripped them since the outbreak began.
Tommy led the way, keeping a careful eye on their surroundings. “We should stick close to the cabin,” he said. “Don’t want to get lost.”
“Good idea,” Sarah agreed. “And if we find anything useful, we can bring it back right away.”
As they walked, they kept their eyes peeled for any signs of food or useful supplies. They knew the forest could provide, but they had to be careful and smart about what they gathered.
After a short while, they came across a small stream, its clear water bubbling cheerfully over smooth stones. Tommy and Sarah knelt by the stream, cupping their hands to drink the cool, refreshing water.
“This is great,” Tommy said, wiping his mouth. “We can fill our water bottles here.”
They took a few minutes to refill their bottles, grateful for the fresh, clean water. As they did, Tommy noticed some berry bushes nearby, their branches heavy with ripe, juicy berries.
“Look, Sarah! Berries!” Tommy exclaimed.
Sarah’s face lit up. “Let’s pick some. They’ll be a nice treat.”
They carefully picked the berries, filling a small container they had brought with them. As they worked, Tommy kept an eye out for any potential danger, but the forest seemed peaceful and quiet.
“Remember not to eat too many at once,” Tommy reminded Sarah. “We don’t want to get sick.”
“I know,” Sarah said with a smile. “But it’s nice to have something fresh.”
After gathering a good amount of berries, they continued their exploration. They found some nut trees and collected a small bag of nuts, feeling a sense of accomplishment with each find. The woods were proving to be a valuable resource, providing them with much-needed food and a break from their worries.
As they walked further, Tommy suddenly stopped, his eyes widening. “Sarah, look!”
Ahead of them, a deer was caught in a trap, its leg tangled in a snare. The deer struggled weakly, its eyes wide with fear and pain.
“Oh no,” Sarah said softly, her heart aching for the trapped animal. “We have to help it.”
Tommy nodded, approaching the deer slowly and carefully. “It’s okay, we’re not going to hurt you,” he murmured, trying to calm the frightened creature.
The deer watched them with wary eyes as Tommy knelt down and began to work on the snare. It took some time, but he managed to loosen the trap and free the deer’s leg.
“There you go,” Tommy said gently. “You’re free now.”
The deer hesitated for a moment, then bolted into the woods, disappearing among the trees. Tommy and Sarah watched it go, a sense of relief and satisfaction washing over them.
“That felt good,” Sarah said, smiling at Tommy. “Helping the deer.”
“Yeah, it did,” Tommy agreed. “It’s nice to do something normal, even with everything that’s going on.”
They continued their exploration, feeling a bit lighter after their encounter with the deer. The woods offered a sense of calm and normalcy, a stark contrast to the chaos that had taken over their lives.
By the time they returned to the cabin, their backpacks were filled with berries, nuts, and a few other useful items they had found along the way. Tommy’s dad greeted them at the door, his face lighting up with pride when he saw their haul.
“Great job, you two,” he said, ruffling Tommy’s hair. “This will help a lot.”
Tommy and Sarah shared their stories of the day’s adventures, including their encounter with the trapped deer. Their mom smiled, listening intently and appreciating the brief respite from their worries.
“That was a kind thing you did,” she said. “It’s important to remember our humanity, even in times like these.”
Tommy nodded, feeling a sense of pride. “We’re doing our best, Mom.”
That evening, they enjoyed a simple meal, enhanced by the fresh berries and nuts Tommy and Sarah had gathered. The sense of accomplishment and normalcy from their day’s exploration brought a bit of comfort and hope to their hearts.
As night fell and they settled in for another night of watchful vigilance, Tommy felt a renewed sense of determination. The woods had provided more than just food; they had given them a reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature, and a sense of connection to the world they were fighting to protect.
Together, they could face whatever challenges lay ahead, knowing that even in the midst of chaos, there were moments of normalcy and hope to be found.
