Chapter 1: The Inheritance
Chapter 1: The Inheritance
Kienna sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the letter in her hands. Her heart felt heavy as she read the words again, each one sinking deeper into her mind.
"I'm sorry to inform you of your grandmother's passing. As her only living relative, you are the rightful inheritor of her estate, including the small farm she owned."
Tears welled up in Kienna's eyes as memories of her beloved grandmother flooded her thoughts. She remembered the warm summer days spent helping her in the garden, the smell of freshly baked bread wafting from the kitchen, and the sound of her grandmother's laughter echoing through the house.
"Kienna, sweetheart, what's wrong?" her mother asked, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
Kienna looked up, her vision blurred by tears. "It's Grandma... She's gone," she choked out, handing the letter to her mother.
Her mother's eyes widened in shock as she read the news. "Oh, sweetheart, I'm so sorry," she said, pulling Kienna into a tight embrace. "Your grandmother was a wonderful woman. She'll be greatly missed."
Kienna nodded, her emotions too raw to put into words. She felt a mixture of sadness and disbelief wash over her. How could her grandmother be gone? It felt like just yesterday that they were laughing and joking together.
"What are you going to do now?" her mother asked gently, wiping away a tear from Kienna's cheek.
Kienna shrugged, feeling lost and uncertain. "I don't know... I guess I'll have to go to the farm and see what's there."
Her mother nodded in understanding. "I'll come with you, if you want. We can go together and help you sort things out."
Kienna managed a weak smile, grateful for her mother's support. "Thanks, Mom. I think I could use the company."
---
As Kienna and her mother drove down the winding country road towards the farm, Kienna's thoughts were in turmoil. She couldn't believe that her grandmother was really gone. It felt like a cruel joke, as if she would walk through the door any minute, smiling and ready to tell Kienna one of her funny stories.
But as they approached the familiar gates of the farm, Kienna's heart clenched with the realization that her grandmother was truly gone. The once vibrant farm seemed to loom before her, silent and still, as if mourning the loss of its beloved owner.
As they parked the car and stepped out onto the gravel driveway, Kienna took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. She knew that she had to be strong, for her grandmother's sake.
Together, Kienna and her mother walked up to the farmhouse, the wooden porch creaking under their footsteps. Kienna hesitated for a moment before reaching out to open the door, her hand trembling slightly.
The house was exactly as Kienna remembered it, filled with the comforting scent of wood and hearth. Memories of her childhood flooded back to her as she stepped inside, her eyes scanning the familiar surroundings.
"Wow, it's been so long since I've been here," her mother said softly, her voice breaking the silence.
Kienna nodded, her throat tight with emotion. "Yeah... It feels strange to be back."
They spent the next few hours exploring the farmhouse, sorting through her grandmother's belongings, and reminiscing about the past. Kienna's mother found old photo albums filled with pictures of Kienna as a child, laughing and playing in the fields with her grandmother by her side.
"It's hard to believe she's gone," Kienna whispered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her mother nodded, her eyes misty with tears. "I know, sweetheart. But she'll always be with us, in our memories and in our hearts."
As the sun began to set outside, casting a warm golden glow over the farm, Kienna felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that her grandmother's spirit would always be with her, guiding her through the challenges ahead.
"I think it's time to get some rest," her mother said gently, placing a comforting hand on Kienna's shoulder. "We can come back tomorrow and start sorting through the rest of the farm."
Kienna nodded, feeling grateful for her mother's presence. "Yeah... I think that would be good."
Together, they made their way to the guest bedroom, where Kienna's grandmother had made up a cozy bed for her. As Kienna lay down and closed her eyes, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. She knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, she would always have her grandmother's love and support to guide her through. And with that comforting thought, she drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever the future held.
Kienna giggled with delight as she chased after the fluffy white sheep, her grandmother's laughter echoing through the fields. The sun was shining brightly overhead, casting a warm glow over the farm as Kienna and her grandmother spent another joyful day together.
"Come on, Grandma, catch me if you can!" Kienna called out, her laughter ringing out like music in the air.
Her grandmother chuckled, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Oh, you're too fast for me, Kienna! I'll never catch up to you."
Kienna grinned mischievously as she darted around the pen, trying to corner the elusive sheep. But the clever creature always managed to slip past her grasp, leaving Kienna laughing and out of breath.
Finally, after several failed attempts, Kienna collapsed onto the ground, her chest heaving with exertion. Her grandmother joined her, sitting down beside her and ruffling her hair affectionately.
"You gave it your best shot, Kienna," her grandmother said with a smile. "That sheep is just too quick for us."
Kienna pouted playfully, but her eyes sparkled with joy. She loved spending time with her grandmother, especially when they were playing with the farm animals. It felt like their own little world, where nothing else mattered except the bond they shared.
As they sat together in the grass, Kienna's grandmother began to tell her stories about the farm animals. She spoke of each one with love and affection, describing their quirks and personalities in vivid detail.
"This is Daisy," her grandmother said, pointing to a gentle cow grazing nearby. "She's the oldest cow on the farm, but she's still the sweetest."
Kienna reached out to pet Daisy's soft fur, smiling as the cow nuzzled her hand affectionately. "Hi, Daisy," she cooed, her heart swelling with love for the gentle creature.
Her grandmother chuckled at Kienna's enthusiasm, her eyes shining with pride. "You have a way with animals, Kienna. They all adore you."
Kienna beamed at her grandmother's words, feeling a swell of happiness in her chest. She loved spending time with the farm animals, each one becoming like a friend to her.
As the afternoon sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the fields, Kienna and her grandmother reluctantly made their way back to the farmhouse. But even as they headed inside for the night, Kienna knew that she would carry the memories of their time together in the fields forever.
---
Years passed, and Kienna grew older, but her love for the farm animals never waned. She continued to spend her days playing with them, laughing and joking with her grandmother by her side.
One sunny afternoon, as Kienna and her grandmother were feeding the chickens, a mischievous rooster suddenly darted out of the coop, flapping its wings and crowing loudly.
"Watch out, Kienna!" her grandmother called out, trying to catch the runaway rooster.
But Kienna was already on the move, darting after the rooster with determination. She chased it around the yard, laughing as it squawked and flapped its wings in protest.
Finally, after a few minutes of frantic chasing, Kienna managed to corner the rooster against the fence, her grandmother joining her a moment later.
"Well done, Kienna!" her grandmother exclaimed, her eyes shining with pride. "You caught him!"
Kienna grinned triumphantly, her chest heaving with exertion. "Thanks, Grandma. That was fun!"
Her grandmother chuckled, giving her a playful shove. "You're a natural, Kienna. I think we might have to make you the official rooster wrangler from now on."
Kienna laughed at the idea, imagining herself in charge of all the mischievous roosters on the farm. It was a silly thought, but it filled her with joy to know that her grandmother believed in her abilities.
As they made their way back to the farmhouse, Kienna felt a sense of contentment wash over her. She knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, she would always have her grandmother by her side, guiding her with love and wisdom.
And as they settled down for the evening, surrounded by the warmth and comfort of the farmhouse, Kienna knew that she was exactly where she belonged: in the loving embrace of her grandmother and the farm animals she cherished.Download Novelah App
