Chapter 58: Guilt

Many came rushing upstairs, their objective is to make the culprit pay. Fox was almost near her exit, but Drea was quicker than the others, it enabled her to reach Fox.
The both of them reached the room, Fox is headed towards the veranda. But Drea did not intend to capture Fox using her own bare hands, she knew the dangers of confronting an unknown assassin.
There, inside the room, Drea stopped. She warned her of the dangers below ground.
"I won't go down if I were you."
It made Fox stop, to her hearing, the voice sounds familiar. Her camouflage outfit made it possible to be unseen, Fox's identity still remained as a secret.
Drea has a point, there could be guards below, but to Fox, she has no other choice, she'd rather die while running than to die in cowardice. With no hesitation, Fox ran towards the veranda. Drea tried to follow her, they both sprinted but Fox was the faster runner. Before Drea could even reach her, she jumped right down.
The events occurred very quickly. Fox landed with no injuries, in fact she looks like a hero with poise. One knee on the ground with eyes still looking fierce, the shootout did not scare her.
Hawk immediately noticed that many armed guards came rushing outside.
"Oh snap!" He exclaimed.
Hawk saw Fox has landed, he assisted her. They both quickly went to where they entered. This is the importance of knowing the victim's area. Fox took flight first. Hawk boosted her up. The guards started shooting at them but they were able to escape. Hawk followed Fox.
In a minute, they were able to land outside the mansion's wall. The guards then hurriedly followed them, but the two assassins' car were just parked near. They both went in, reapers tried shooting at them but the bulletproof Lamborghini did not bulge.
Fox drove as fast as she could, she knew that anytime now Bluemierre's most deadly assassins and capos could be sent to hunt them. She stepped on the gas, Hawk just kept an eye at the rear mirror. Their prediction wasn't wrong, five cars started following them.
"Drive faster." Hawk ordered.
Fox did not answered. She just did what he said. Bullet flew but they remained unharmed. This is the purpose why Fox invested in this asset of hers.
"We need to lose them off." Fox spoke her idea.
Hawk started thinking, the cars following them aren't just ordinary ones, they were nearly able to reach them.
"Then lose them, take a right." He replied.
The streets were dark, Fox knew what she should do. She killed the lights, and instead of driving towards the street, she took the track off course. Hawk smiled, she's brilliant, just like how he expected her to be.
The cars following them were separated for a few meters, that gave Fox and Hawk a chance to hide. On the darkest part of the street, near the woods, Fox parked the car in silence. The both of them did not bother to talk.
The roar of engines were no longer heard, the cars seem to have taken a different path. But though they were safe and sound, Fox is still uncertain and quiet. The accident bugged her out.
This feeling is so unusual for her but she is feeling guilty. Hawk could notice that she is uneasy. He is still unaware of what happened inside, he waited for her silently below.
With care seen in his voice, Hawk asked.
"Are you okay?"
Fox heard him, but it took almost two minutes before she could respond. The senior reaper reminded her of her grandfather. Of all people that she killed, this one is the most guilt filled.
After calming herself, Fox looked at Hawk. She removed her mask. The lights were killed. Hawk couldn't see her, but he can sense her stare.
"I killed somebody." Fox replied out of her ordinary tone.
Hawk's forehead wrinkled. He couldn't get her action and reaction. Such things should not be unusual for her. She's hired to kill.
"Isn't that your job?" Hawk asked.
"I killed an old man." Fox added coldly.
Her reply even turned Hawk quiet. He did not expect that Fox will act this way, he knew the assassin who is heartless, hostile and merciless, but what is happening to the old Ace Fox?
Fox could no longer hold it, a tear fell. Hawk couldn't see it, he is unaware of her silent weeping. Fox thought that she could bury her past, but she was wrong. Those people made her for who she is now.
"We'll get Dylan next time." Hawk tried to lighten up the mood.
He knew her heaviness. The guilt may be unbearable, if he was placed on the same position as hers, he might have left the assassination industry. Killing someone is their job, but they still value the blood of the innocent.
Fox was snapped back to her senses, she wiped the tear of her face. Life must go on, her conscience was unclean, but sadly, she thinks it is not yet the time to clean it.
"We'll get him surely next time." Fox replied with compliance.
The old tone of her speaking is back. But Fox knew that something is awakening within her, it's unexplainable but soon she'll be able to explain what is it.
Fox started the engine. The coast is clear, they have lost Bluemierre Crest. Lights came on, Hawk's first intention is to look at Fox. Her mask is down, he could see how perfect her face is. The unusual feeling inside him blossomed.
The ambience was nearly dramatic and in slow motion. In his sight, she's the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. He couldn't speak the words inside his heart, but to himself, he is now ready to admit that the assassin of Flying Talons fell in love with the Clever Ace of Foxes.
'I don't know you well enough, but I'm willing to spend eternity and even beyond just to get lost into you.'
