Chapter 23 New Threat

Phoenix sat in the polished boardroom of U&K, the city’s skyline sprawling behind her. Across the table sat Fern, Berla, and a group of company executives. Fern’s cold stare was unmistakable, his posture rigid as if he were bracing for an attack. Berla sat beside him, her expression guarded yet with an occasional smirk of confidence, as if she believed she held some unspoken advantage.
In the quiet moments before the meeting started, Phoenix reviewed her notes, mentally preparing for any tactic Fern or Berla might throw her way. But as she looked up, a figure caught her eye—a tall, unfamiliar man in a sleek suit entering the room with an air of authority. This was James Cross, the new investor who had recently taken an interest in U&K Fashion, a man known for his cutthroat tactics and significant influence in the industry.
James offered a polite smile to everyone, but when his eyes landed on Phoenix, they lingered, assessing. Phoenix held his gaze, determined not to let her nerves show. Could he be on their side, or was he truly a neutral party here for business? she wondered.
“Good afternoon, everyone,” James began, his voice deep and authoritative. “I’ve been following U&K’s growth for a while, and with recent management shifts, I believe there’s an opportunity here to redefine what this company represents.” His gaze shifted to Phoenix, then to Fern, making it clear he understood the underlying tensions.
Fern interrupted smoothly, flashing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “We’re all thrilled to have you here, Mr. Cross. With your expertise, I’m sure we can maintain the core values of U&K.”
Phoenix took her chance, straightening in her seat. “Or perhaps we can evolve them,” she countered, her voice even but pointed, watching for a reaction from Fern and Berla.
Fern’s jaw clenched subtly, but he masked it with a neutral nod, his gaze unreadable.
James glanced between the two, his smile growing as if he enjoyed the sparring match. “Evolution is always intriguing, Phoenix. I’ve always believed that companies flourish when they adapt.” He paused, his eyes twinkling with an unspoken challenge. “And you strike me as someone who knows how to adapt.”
Phoenix returned his gaze steadily, knowing she had just been tested. She wasn’t about to let herself be cornered.Phoenix didn’t let her gaze waver from James. She could sense the power he held—not just in his presence but in the way he seemed to control the room effortlessly, as if everyone was waiting for his cue to breathe. She knew she had to stay sharp; men like James could be allies or enemies, depending on how the cards were played.
“As you know, Phoenix,” James continued, leaning forward, “U&K has a legacy, but that legacy can also be… restricting. Sometimes, fresh visionaries with new leadership bring about the real turning points in a company’s journey.” His tone was almost casual, but Phoenix sensed the layers beneath it—a test of loyalty, perhaps even a signal.
Fern’s expression shifted, his carefully guarded mask slipping slightly. He narrowed his gaze at James, but Phoenix caught it and knew that he understood the undertone as well. She felt a surge of satisfaction—James was subtly undermining Fern’s influence, and he was doing it right in front of everyone.
“U&K is ready to take that step,” she replied, her voice calm yet firm. “We can honor the past without letting it dictate the future. Isn’t that why we’re here, Mr. Cross?”
James’s smile deepened. “Exactly, Phoenix. And with you leading some of these new initiatives, I expect some innovative changes—changes that will set U&K apart from its competitors. I’m certain you won’t let us down.”
Fern’s eyes flashed, but he remained silent, likely waiting for a chance to regain control. Berla shifted in her seat, her carefully crafted smile faltering as she glanced toward Fern, seeking reassurance.
The meeting continued, with Phoenix outlining her plans to revamp the company’s brand image, aiming to distance it from Fern’s traditional, stifling influence. She spoke clearly, confidently, aware that her every word would carry weight with James and that each idea presented was another nail in Fern’s coffin.
After the meeting, as Phoenix gathered her things, James approached her. “I was impressed by your vision, Phoenix. Most people in your position would shy away from challenging legacy structures. I like seeing someone with ambition.”
Phoenix tilted her head, her guard still up. “Ambition is necessary, Mr. Cross. Without it, the company would stagnate—and that’s not something I’m willing to let happen.”
James nodded approvingly, his gaze sharp. “Good answer. We’re on the same page, then.
Phoenix returned to her office, her mind abuzz with thoughts from the meeting. James Cross seemed like someone she could use to her advantage, but she knew she’d have to tread carefully. His interest could be valuable, but it could also lead to new complications if she wasn’t vigilant.
She barely had a moment to breathe when her phone chimed. It was Irish, confirming their meeting location: a discreet bar where they wouldn’t be overheard. She could sense the urgency in his brief message, and it only reinforced her own determination to help him put an end to this haunting shadow from his past.
Before leaving, she instructed her assistant to look into recent transactions and communications involving Fern and Berla. If they were trying to sabotage her position at U&K, she wanted to know about it first.
                                                 **********
Back at the office, Zaylee was restless. She knew Phoenix was up to something with Irish. Her jealousy and suspicion boiled over, making her desperate to find out what they were hiding.
Late that night, Zaylee crept into Phoenix’s office, snooping and sifting through her files, hoping to find any hint of what was going on as the two shared a quiet moment.
Her gaze darting to the locked drawer Phoenix used for her files. With a quiet smirk, she retrieved a spare key she’d managed to swipe from Phoenix’s assistant earlier that day. Carefully unlocking the drawer, she began sifting through documents, her eyes gleaming as she found notes detailing Phoenix’s plans and alliances within the company.
“Oh, Phoenix,” Zaylee murmured, a dark satisfaction creeping into her tone. “So, this is how you plan to take over, huh? Let’s see how long you keep the upper hand.”
Just as she was about to close the drawer, she noticed a small envelope, half-hidden under a stack of papers. Curiosity piqued, she opened it and found a letter addressed to Phoenix from Irish. She read the words with growing interest, catching snippets about Givonna’s death and cryptic mentions of “The Oracle.”
Zaylee’s smirk widened. So, there’s more to Phoenix and Irish than just business.
