Chapter 3 THE CONFESSION

At five, I had already arrived at Lake. Tyler was the one who insisted on meeting in this place.  I really didn't know what he was thinking. Stalking me all the way to my house? Is he crazy? Do most rich people lack common sense? I don't understand. I looked at the vast lake. It felt so calm. While enjoying the lake's ambiance, I noticed an old lady asking for compassion from the people around. Her appearance resembled a beggar. Unfortunately, she was chased away, deemed a disturbance to those nearby. I felt sorry for her. I took out my wallet. I had three dollars. My last money.
"I’m hungry, dear. It's been three days since I ate. Do you have any food?" The old lady approached me. Her voice was already heartbreaking. With little thought, I placed the three-dollar note on her palm.
"Grandma, take this money to buy food, okay?"
"Is this alright, dear? Won't it be a problem?" The old lady seemed hesitant, as if she knew this was my last bit of money.
"It's okay, grandma. Please take it to buy food. I sincerely mean it."
"Thank you, dear. It's my fortune today. Thank you very much." Her face lit up with joy.
"You're welcome, grandma." I gave her a sweet smile. Seeing her happy makes me happy too.
"Dear, I’ve got something to give you."
"No, it's okay, grandma. I sincerely gave that money."
"No, dear. This gift is specifically for you. Wait, a moment." I looked puzzled as the old lady took something from under her clothes. A Dream Catcher? I hesitated for a moment before accepting her gift. I didn't want to hurt her feelings by refusing.
"That's called a Dream Catcher."
I nodded. I stared at the blue Dream Catcher without blinking. It was quite beautiful.
"After this, dear, you won't have any more bad dreams. Use it wisely, okay?"
I nodded.
"Actually, you didn’t have to give me this but, thank you grandma," I said with a smile. My ringing phone startled me. Oops, I forgot to turn off the alarm.
"Grandma, once again, I'm so..."
I looked around. Huh? The old lady disappeared so quickly. I shrugged. I put the Dream Catcher in my small bag. I checked the time. Oh God, where is this guy? Is he intentionally trying to mess with me? I fanned my face with my hand. It felt hot this evening. The breeze brushed against my neck. Realizing someone behind me, I quickly elbowed them with great force. In an instant, the person fell.
"Ouch, that hurts!" Tyler held his chest.
I smiled sarcastically.
"Does it hurt?" I mocked. I felt satisfied seeing him like this. Tyler struggled to get up. Don't even mention his face. His lips were practically touching the ground. I couldn't stop smiling. Served him right!
"Wow, you're quite strong, huh? Just like the strength of an elephant. Luckily, my bones aren't broken."
I rolled my eyes.
"Don’t be exaggerated. Whose fault is it? You were the one blowing air first. Why? You thought it was romantic?" I glared at him. Tyler smiled widely, looking at me.
"I enjoy seeing you angry like this. So adorable," Tyler winked.
I swiftly swung my elbow. Before he could feel the impact anywhere else, Tyler started screaming as if possessed. I burst into laughter, watching his reaction.
"Please stop. I might die if I get hit by your elbow." Tyler's face turned pale.
"Fine. So, what do you want from me? If it's not important, you'll regret messing with me."
Tyler grinned while touching the back of his neck.
"Actually, I've liked you for a long time. Do you want to be my girlfriend?"
“What nonsense are you talking about, huh?” I blinked several times as if I couldn’t believe hearing such a confession, especially from Tyler.
“Don’t you believe me? Hanna, why would I bother you if I don’t like you?” Tyler’s expression turned serious, as if he wasn’t playing around at all.
I burst into laughter, and Tyler’s eyebrows furrowed.
“Why are you laughing? Do you think my confession is just a joke? Then look at my eyes. Eyes don’t lie, Hanna. You know that. Yes, I often tease you, I always make you upset. But it’s because I’m not good at expressing my feelings to you, and... because I want to get your attention, Hanna. I’ve always been watching you at the college. I get restless when I don’t see you. Especially you, always careless. I worry if you fall somewhere. Every day, my mind is filled with thoughts of you, Hanna. I want to be your best boyfriend, your protector, and I want to fill my time being with you. Now even if you’ve heard all of this, do you still not believe me?” Tyler’s eyes were filled with emotions.
I listened in silence to Tyler’s words. I never knew he had been watching me all this time. No wonder I often saw him wherever I went, and every time we met, he would mock me with words like whore, illegitimate child, and so on. His words hurt me so much that I cried every time I remembered them.
Tyler looked deep into my eyes. I stared into his eyes. Was he sincere in liking me? His eyes glanced at my lips, and his head lowered towards my lips. I turned my face away, distancing myself.
“Hanna...” Tyler’s face looked hurt.
“I’m sorry. I don’t have any feelings for you. I hope from now on, you won’t bother me anymore. You said you liked me. So, I hope you listen to my words this time. Leave me alone.” After saying that, I walked away without looking back.
I stared at the pictures of my family on my phone. The version of myself in those pictures is fake. My smile is fake, my words are fake, everything is fake. I admit I'm a hypocrite. There are many things I'm not honest about. I'm not even honest with myself. All because of my father. His failure as the head of the family makes me always look down on him. I feel disgusted and resentful. Even looking at his face makes me sick. For the same reason, I support everything Mum does. Including...
"Hanna!"
I looked at the door. My mom's cheerful face appeared at my bedroom door.
"Why, Mom?"
"Look at this, isn't the watch that Dad sent beautiful? If you're interested, he said he'll mail it later." Mom showed me a picture of the watch.
"Beautiful. It's decent."
"Okay, Mom asked him to mail it right away!" Mom's face was beaming.
"Oh, he already called Mom. Just a moment!" Mom ran out to answer the phone call.
Yes. It's true. What everyone is thinking is correct. The call is not from Dad. The call is from him. Mom's special friend. I don't care what people say to me. A disobedient child? A useless child? I don't care. They don't feel what I feel. For me, my mother's happiness is my happiness too. I'm not backstabbing my father because, from the beginning, I've never been on his side. Don't be surprised; even my siblings know about this. Only my dad doesn't know. How would he know when he himself hasn't slept in the same room as mom for a long time? I sighed.
The door to my room was knocked a few times. Before I got up, the door was already open. Dad's face appeared in the doorway.
"Hanna, are you busy? Can we talk for a minute?" Dad asked.
"What's up?" I inquired with an uneasy expression. I could already guess what he was going to say. Dad slowly entered my room.
"Hanna, do you have any money? I want to borrow some for-a while. I will give it back later. I promise." His voice was gentle when asking for money. I knew well that his promise to repay was nothing but just a lie. I sighed. Here we go again.
"I don't have any money."
"Don't be like this, can you? I just want to borrow for a while. I will give it back later," His gentle voice turned stern.
"I don't have any money. Even if I did, I wouldn't give it to you. Do you think I don't know that you're going to gamble with that money? Enough is enough! Please don't make me regret having a father like you!" My patience was reaching its limit.
"What are you saying?" Dad's facial expression changed, shocked by my words.
I sighed, filled with disappointment.
"Dad, do you know, since you married mom, she has never been happy. Sometimes, I wish mom had never married someone like you. It's fine if it's just the two of us. At least, mom would be happy. At least, she could buy everything she wanted. Now that she's married to you, she lost everything. Have you ever bought new clothes for her? She's your wife. Why is it so difficult to fulfill all of her needs? It's not like she's asking you to buy an airplane! All because of your debts, right? You use your salary to pay gambling debts. Am I right? It's been 20 years already! Enough is enough!" I released all the pent-up emotions in my chest. Dad lowered his head, listening to my words. I knew my words hurt him. But I couldn't take it anymore.
"It's too late, Hanna. Go to sleep. I apologize for not being able to be a good father to you," Dad said before leaving my room. I sat there, overwhelmed.
