"I'd appreciate it if you please stopped coming here," the director firmly said to Adrienne. Her tone reflected a combination of disappointment and concern.
"What? You believe everything the media is saying about me?" Adrienne's voice trembled with hurt. She couldn't understand how her actions outside the orphanage affected her charity work.
"You have to understand my decision. We appreciate all that you've done for our orphanage since day one, but we can't ignore the fact that you aren't the role model we thought you were. I am deeply disappointed, and I'm also sorry," the director explained, her voice filled with regret.
"I can't believe even you guys believe that nonsense. What does any of that have to do with my charity at this orphanage? You know how much I love it here, and you can't just send me off like that," Adrienne tried to reason, her voice laced with frustration.
"I'm sorry. I don't want to risk giving the orphanage a bad name," the director sincerely apologized, though her resolve remained unshaken.
"Wow."
" So now Adrienne Davison is a bad name? And if it's associated with others, their reputation gets tarnished too, right?" Adrienne fired back, her tone laced with disbelief.
"I made a promise to Daniel, and nothing will make me stop seeing the kids here.
They love me, and I love them as well," Adrienne declared with finality, determination coursing through her veins. She rose from her seat, ready to leave the office.
As she opened the door, frustration still within her, Adrienne carelessly bumped into a man's chest.
Startled, she quickly apologized and tried to continue on her way without even glancing up at the person.
However, before she could take another step, the man gently caught her arm.
"I didn't think you'd come," a familiar voice said softly to Adrienne.
Adrienne slowly lifted her head, her eyes widening in astonishment.
"Is that who I think it is?" she silently wondered.
She turned to face him, and as their eyes locked, she found herself staring into the familiar gaze of Daniel.
"Daniel?"
She was so shocked, tears streaming down her face as she struggled to find the words.
"Hey. Why are you crying?" Daniel's voice was gentle, his smile comforting as he pulled her into an embrace. Adrienne sobbed uncontrollably, her body trembling against his shoulder.
"I am so sorry, Daniel. I need to explain myself. I tried calling you, but it seems you blocked all my numbers. You didn't give me a chance to explain," Adrienne choked through her tears.
Feeling overwhelmed with guilt, she dropped to her knees and pleaded with Daniel, her voice trembling.
"I can't even begin to imagine the heartache you must have felt for over three years. Seeing me with other men, hearing me talk about them, I was blind to your pain. You deserved so much better. I wouldn't blame you if you hated me."
Gently, Daniel squatted down in front of her, his voice full of compassion.
"Adrienne, you can't blame yourself. It wasn't your fault. The kidnappers caused all of this. Do not carry that burden on your shoulders."
Adrienne's tear-filled eyes met his, searching for forgiveness.
"But I hurt you, Daniel. I don't deserve your forgiveness. I was a terrible person. Please, find it in your heart to forgive me."
"No, Adrienne. You aren't a bad person. You were a victim. We were both victims. It was a difficult and painful time for me, and I hated you at some point, but seeing your video online made me realize the gravity of what you went through.
I should have never resented you," Daniel's voice was filled with warmth and understanding as he gently patted her back.
Adrienne's guilt overwhelmed her.
"I deserve to be hated by you. There's more to it, Daniel," she confessed, her heart pounding in her chest.
She knew it was time to come clean about everything.
"What do you mean? What haven't I been told?" Daniel's voice was soft, encouraging her to open up.
Taking a deep breath, Adrienne mustered the courage to share her darkest secret.
"Three years ago, before I was kidnapped, I... I... cheated on you, Daniel," her words hung in the air as she closed her eyes, bracing herself for his response. She couldn't bear to see the hurt in his eyes.
"What do you mean? You were at the club with your girls, remember? Or did your memories come back in fractured pieces?" Daniel's voice trembled as he spoke.
Adrienne's eyes filled with tears as she struggled to find the courage to confess her mistake.
"No. I really cheated on you. I broke my virginity that day at the club with a total stranger. I had sex with a stranger just a week before our wedding," she sobbed.
The words hit Daniel like a punch to the gut. He instinctively withdrew his hand from her back, taken aback by the enormity of her confession.
"What?" he exclaimed.
"That's impossible. My Adrienne wouldn't do that, right? Please tell me that's not true," he pleaded, his eyes welling up with hurt.
Adrienne nodded through her tears, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's true, Daniel. I am sorry. I was lost in the heat of the moment. I met Richard and we had sex in the bathroom. I betrayed you... I broke my virginity with him," she admitted, her voice cracking with remorse.
"Richard?" Daniel's voice cracked with anger and confusion.
Adrienne then explained everything that had transpired.
She confessed how she slept with Richard, how he rescued her, how she stayed with him and started developing feelings for him, how she agreed to go on a month-long trip with him.
She spilled the truth about faking the accident and how things took a dangerous turn, resulting in her memory loss.
Tears streamed down Daniel's face. The weight of the betrayal crushed him.
"I guess I was right after all," he said, his voice laced with pain and disappointment.
"I always wondered why it was taking you ages to remember me, or why you didn't fall in love with me again. And now I see it," he continued, standing up on his feet, his body trembling with emotion.
"You never loved me. You just wanted to settle with me," he spat out, his fists clenched tightly by his sides.
Adrienne's sobs intensified as she tried to defend herself through the pain.
"I told your mom, if you really loved me, you'd have remembered me or fallen in love with me again.
If you slept with a man you barely knew a week before our wedding, and even went on a month-long trip with him without contacting the people close to you who were worried sick about you, it means you never loved me.
Because if you did, you would never have the guts to do that," Daniel's hurt and pain was evident in every word.
"My mom knew about it too. I didn't even know she knew," Adrienne added, further deepening Daniel's anguish and disbelief.
The revelation hit Daniel with such force that he dropped to his knees, his heart shattered into a million pieces.
"Your mom knew? The same woman I cried to almost every day? The same woman who witnessed me giving everything I had to find you?"
He couldn't process the betrayal and the fact that even Adrienne's own mother had kept this secret.
"You expect me to believe that you didn't know about Richard telling your mom, even though you were busy sleeping with him for one whole month, forgetting about your dying fiancee?!" Daniel's voice echoed through the room, filled with anger.
"Juliette was right after all; you are nothing but a deceitful snake.
Our engagement, it was all just an act of pity, right? Your mother never wanted a lowly orphan like me to be with her only daughter and child," Daniel spat out the words with venom.
"Daniel! That's not true, please try to understand," she pleaded.
"Try to understand the betrayal? Did you ever love me?" Daniel questioned.
The room fell silent. Adrienne struggled to find the right words to respond, uncertainty clouding her thoughts...
