Chapter Fifty-Three: Emma's Unmasking

Emma's heart went out for her, as she looks really regretful and apologetic.
"I know that it was all an accident, and it was not your intention to put my article into printing. There's nothing we can do now, but I'll have to take full responsibility for this." she finally gave in.
"What happened, Emma? Would you like to talk about it?" Samantha inquired, while looking concerned.
"Samantha... I think I'm in love with Darren Hayes. The reason why I asked you not to print my article about him is because I want to tell him everything myself... I don't want to hurt and betray the person that I truly love."
Emma finally confesses, as she starts to break down and cry.
"Oh, Emma... I really don't know what to say. But one thing's for sure... It's not a bad thing to fall inlove with someone. You must be thinking that you're such a bad person for leading him on, but if he also loves you, he will find forgiveness in his heart." Samamtha relayed, while giving Emma a comforting hug.
"I love him so much! I'll do everything and anything that I can for him to forgive me." Emma said, as she is getting more and more emotional.
She's willing to accept Darren's anger because of what she did, and because it was entirely all her fault...
=============================
Few days later.
Emma is currently at a secluded park while she's waiting for Darren Hayes to arrive at their meeting place.
She decided to call him to tell him everything and apologize to him...
"Emma."
She held her breath in suspense when she heard that familiar voice. As she slowly turns around, he saw Darren standing a few meters away from her.
Emma secretly shivered when she saw Darren staring back at her with cold eyes. She couldn't see any expression on his face...
"Darren, I---!" Emma wasn't able to finish her sentence when he suddenly spoke.
"What is the meaning of this, Emma?" Darren asked, as she can hear the tone of anger on his voice.
Emma shuddered in horror as she saw the latest copy of The Chronicle newspaper on his hand.
Darren opened the newspaper and started reading her article there.
"Darren Hayes is just like a normal guy when he's dating a girl. He is a real gentleman, and he knows how to make a girl swoon. Many girls would totally fall in love with him because of his looks, character, and personality..."
"Darren, please let me explain..." Emma pleaded, as she tries to get closer to him.
"Tsk, tsk. You've disappointed me, Emma." Darren said, as he is trying to control his anger.
Emma's body started trembling. It's obvious that Darren is trying his best to control his anger towards her. It is also clear that he won't be able to forgive her.
Meanwhile, Darren is secretly taken back when he saw Amaia's tears falling down from her face. She looked so vulnerable and defenseless. He wants to hug her right there and then, but his anger seems to be more evident...
"We shouldn't have met each other Darren... If we didn't meet each other, maybe I won't be able to hurt you like this." Emma relayed, while still crying.
Darren feels deeply hurt as well, as if someone punched him on the chest. He doesn't want to see Emma crying like this.
Without any word, he decided to walk away from her, without looking back at her...
At the same time, Emma just keeps on crying, as she watches Darren walking away from her. She couldn't blame him for being so angry. She betrayed him, and it's entirely all her fault...
==================================
Even though Emma wasn't able to sleep last night, she decided to meet up with Samantha, and have a serious talk to her.
Emma can still vividly remember Darren Haye's angry facial expression when he finally learned about her article.
She shook her head wildly, as if she's trying to shake off the memories of what happened between them.
"Emma, I really don't know what to say, but I just want you to know how sorry I am for putting you in this complicated situation. It's all my fault, and I sincerely apologize..." Samantha was the first one to speak.
Emma shook her head in response.
"No, Sam. You don't have to apologize. In fact, I should be the one apologizing to you. If I can go back in time, I won't accept this undercover mission. I should have known from the start that I'm not good enough for this. Well, I can say that I'm not really good at everything I do..." she said, as she bitterly smiles.
"No, that's not true." Samantha spoke again.
"Anyway, to make the long story short, I want to tell you something. I would like to formally resign from The Chronicle, Samantha." Emma finally announced, as she puts her resignation letter at the table.
"But why? If you're resigning because of what happened between you and Darren.Hayes, I can talk to him and say that I forced you to do this undercover mission, and it was not your intention to hurt him." Samantha tries to convince Emma.
"No, please don't do that. Resigning from this job is my own way of atonement and hopefully, I can move on with my life. And I hope Darren can do the same thing as well." Emma enunciated.
Samantha became silent, as she is too surprised with Emma's decision.
"Please accept my resignation letter. Anyway, I'll still be around. But for now, I need to be alone. Thank you very much for everything, Sam." Emma  finally said her goodbyes, and afterwards, she stepped out from the office.
Samantha wasn't able to say anything else. She just watches Emma walk away while feeling so sad and disappointed...
