Inside the conference room, the two board members, Edward Cooper and Joseph Coleman, sat with stern expressions. They wasted no time in getting to the point. "Harris," Mr. Cooper began, "we've been hearing about the recent controversies surrounding your personal life, and we're concerned about how it might affect the Thompson Group. We believe it's time for a change in leadership." Harris leaned forward, his frustration simmering beneath the surface. "You're suggesting I step down as chairman?" Mr. Coleman nodded firmly. "Yes. We believe it's in the best interest of the Thompson Group. Your recent distractions have been impacting our operations, and we can't afford to lose any more ground." Harris couldn't deny that he had been preoccupied with the turmoil in his personal life, but he didn't let it affect his ability to lead effectively. He wouldn't step down as the chairman. Harris promised his Dad that he will continue the legacy he built, and he is keeping his word. "I understand your concerns," he said, his tone measured. "But I assure you, I have a plan to address the issues surrounding the Thompson Group. I'm working closely with a strong conglomerate to secure our future." Mr. Coleman exchanged a skeptical glance with Mr. Cooper, but Harris could see a glimmer of hesitation in their eyes. It was a small crack in their resolve, but Harris was determined to exploit it. "Give me a little more time," he urged. "I promise to turn things around and lead this company to success." The board members exchanged another glance, this time with a hint of uncertainty. They clearly weren't ready to make a snap decision. After a tense pause, Mr. Cooper spoke. "Very well, Harris. We'll give you a chance to prove yourself. But you need to act swiftly, or we'll revisit this conversation." As the board members left the room, Harris sank into his chair, feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. He knew he had to make good on his promise and secure the support of Steele Enterprises to ensure the Thompson Group's future. It was a daunting task, but he was ready to face it head-on. Nicole's unexpected entrance into Harris's office disrupted the tense atmosphere that had settled over him. He looked up from his desk, his irritation clear, but there was a flicker of surprise in his eyes. He hadn't expected Nicole to barge in like this. "Nicole," he began, his voice tight, "I thought I made it clear to you that I don't want to see you again?" Harris said irritation was evident in his voice. Nicole, however, was undeterred. She strode further into the room, her expression serious. "Harris, you need to listen to me. I know I've made some unforgivable mistakes but this concerns you, Mallory, and Harriet." Harris leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms, and regarded Nicole with a skeptical look. "What are you talking about?" Nicole took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. "Marian and Dominic are plotting something, Harris. They want to tear your relationship with Mallory apart. Marian wants you and her granddaughter, Harriet, while Dominic wants Mallory for himself." Harris's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He hadn't expected this revelation. "How do you know about this?" Nicole hesitated before answering, "I heard their conversation as they both think I'm still with them. They were discussing their plan to create chaos and doubts in your relationship with Mallory. They want to make it seem like you and Mallory are better off without each other." "I called Mom, and she promised she would never interfere in my life again. I was right for not believing her. She will never change. Still, the woman who wants to manipulate everyone around her." "They will use your Mom's resources and Dominic's company to continue tainting you and Mallory's name." Harris's expression hardened as he absorbed the gravity of Nicole's words. It was becoming increasingly clear that Marian and Dominic were willing to go to great lengths to achieve their goals. He had underestimated the extent of their manipulation. "Why are you telling me this, Nicole?" Harris asked, suspicion still lingering. Nicole looked down for a moment before meeting his gaze again. "Because, despite everything, I still care about you, Harris. And I don't want to see your life and your family's life torn apart by their selfish ambitions. Harriet deserves better, and so do you." Harris's anger had dissipated, replaced by a sense of grim determination. "Thank you for telling me all of this, Nicole. But I'm still not ready to forgive you." Nicole leaned in closer, her voice low and sincere. "I understand Harris, what I did was unforgivable and I accept your decision wholeheartedly. I'm doing this not to have your forgiveness but because it is the right thing to do." Harris nodded slowly, realizing that he had a reluctant ally in Nicole, at least in this particular matter. "Alright, Nicole. We'll work together to bring this to light. But I want you to promise that after this is over, you'll respect my decision to move on with Mallory." Nicole nodded in agreement. "I promise, Harris. Let's put an end to Marian and Dominic's manipulation once and for all. I want to clear my conscience before leaving the city for a fresh start." "You're leaving? I hope you're not doing this because of me. Nicole, the city is big, and we can co-exist without seeing each other while doing our goals in life." "No, it's not like that, Harris. I'm doing this for myself, and I've been meaning to do this for years. Start a new life outside my Dad's shadow." "I understand. Good for you!" As Harris settled into his office after the meeting with Nicole, he couldn't shake off the unease that had settled in his mind. He knew he had to share what he had learned with Mallory, as troubling as it was. Later that evening, when they were finally alone together in the comfort of their home, Harris took a deep breath and began to speak. "Mallory, there's something I need to tell you," he started, his tone serious. Mallory, who had been in the kitchen preparing dinner, turned to face him, concern etching her features. "What is it, Harris? You look so serious." Harris approached her, taking her hands in his. "Nicole came to see me at the office today," he began. Mallory's eyebrows furrowed with confusion. "Nicole? Why would she come to your office?" Harris sighed, realizing that this was going to be a difficult conversation. "She came to warn me, Mallory. She said that Marian and Dominic are working together on some plan to tear us apart." Mallory's eyes widened with alarm, and she felt a shiver run down her spine. "What kind of plan?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Harris shook his head, his expression grim. "I don't know the details, but it's clear they want to continue creating chaos in our lives. Mom wants me and Harriet, and Dominic wants you." Mallory's heart pounded in her chest as the implications of Harris's words sank in. "But why, Harris? What could they possibly gain from all of this? Forcing people to be with them." Harris ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his features. "I don't have all the answers, Mallory. But what I do know is that I won't let them harm you or Harriet. We'll face whatever they throw at us together." Mallory nodded, her fear slowly giving way to determination. "I trust you, Harris. We'll get through this, no matter what." Harris smiled, a mixture of relief and affection in his eyes. "That's my girl," he said, pulling her into a warm embrace. Mallory didn't object, but then, a mischievous glint appeared in Mallory's eyes, and she looked up at him with a playful smile. "Is that all Nicole came to discuss with you?" Harris chuckled, the tension of the moment easing. "Jealous, huh? Well, you have nothing to worry about, Mallory. You're the only woman for me, now and always." Mallory moved away from Harris's embrace. "That's not what I meant, okay. I'm not jealous. I was just asking." "If you say so," Harris said with an evil smirk on his lips. In that moment, they found solace in each other's arms, a bond forged through the trials and tribulations they faced together. But the trials awaiting them would force them to confront their deepest fears and insecurities, threatening to unravel the very foundation of their love.
