Chapter 60 Their Son’s Parents

Cailen stopped a ways back, pulling his coat tighter around him as the fall breeze blew and made him shiver.
He was always surprised sometimes when he really looked at Ezekiel and saw how much he's grown.
Up until last year, it seemed as though he had missed the puberty bus until one day, Cailen really looked at him and noticed he had grown about a foot and was stealing his cologne to wear.
It was a bit of a shock that he quickly got over and went out to buy Ezekiel his own cologne along with some shaving supplies since he had noticed the boy had also started growing some scruff.
It was something he never had a problem with in the first place because until now, he never had a single hair grow on his face, well aside from his eyebrows and his head, of course.
Cailen knew he was going to be one of those teenagers that looked way old than they really were just because puberty decided to randomly attack and put a bunch of hair on his face- that, and Ezekiel now stood at eye level with Cailen, if not taller, which he still doesn’t want to admit to himself.
It wasn't fair, it made it hard to be intimidating when you couldn't look down at the person you were giving shit.
Ezekiel kept his face clean shaven, though there wasn't that much to shave, but he didn't like all the facial hair since not many other boys had any in his class.
He liked to let his hair grow out long enough to cover half his ears, any longer and it started to curl out, making his head look like a spaceship, as he called it.
He wasn't very muscular, not yet. He was more of a runner and played on the school's football team, though he was talking about taking up boxing once Asher had told him about his own experience in that department so he very well may turn out to be a big muscular bloke soon enough.
Then Cailen really wouldn't be able to give Ezekiel shit when he decided to start into the drinking days of his teen years, if he hadn't already.
Luckily, they haven't had to deal with any of that, though Ezekiel might just be very good at hiding it. Neither Asher nor Cailen have noticed anything but they knew to expect it, especially with today's youth.
After a moment, Cailen finally closed the distance between them, coming to a stop behind Ezekiel though the boy didn't seem to notice. He was more focused on the grass he was plucking out of the earth, sparring the odd glance towards the stone infront of him.
Cailen looked to the stone set in between two graves.
It was a simple stone that read:
Elise and Patrick Emery, May 1984 - November 2014, January 1981 - November 2014.
Cailen noticed Ezekiel had started coming to the gravesite a little over a year ago. If he had been coming here before, he had no idea but he's been waiting for Ezekiel to tell them about it or ask them about it because he was hoping Ezekiel trusted them enough to confide in them about this.
He was a little uncertain about interrupting Ezekiel right now but he did have a party that was starting in less than an hour.
"You know, when having a birthday party, it usually helps to have the birthday boy present." Cailen said, startling Ezekiel into turning around, brown eyes wide with shock.
"Papa- I-" Ezekiel stuttered out as Cailen raised an eyebrow at him. "What- I-"
"That's quite the sentence, but it doesn't explain your disappearance an hour before your party." Cailen said, taking a few steps to the side so he could sit down in the grass with his son.
Ezekiel watched him, eyes still wide like he had been caught doing something bad.
Cailen knew he probably felt like he might be betraying them somehow by coming to visit his mother and father's grave and Cailen wanted to make sure he knew that it was fine.
The only upsetting thing about it was that Ezekiel felt the need to hide it.
"I just, I-" Ezekiel began again, eyes darting towards the grave stone they were both sat infront of.
"Wanted to say hi?" Cailen offered, nodding towards the graves.
Ezekiel's mouth snapped shut as he looked away from Cailen, nodding his head ever so slightly.
"How did you know I was here?" Ezekiel asked quietly, going back to plucking the grass from the earth.
"I followed you a while ago-"
"You followed me?" Ezekiel asked, almost like he wanted to be mad but couldn't find the anger to actually be mad.
"Yes, you were acting strange and I wanted to make sure you weren't getting into trouble." Cailen defended himself. "That was a long time ago though... I just had a feeling today when Maddie told us you left."
"Of course the brat ratted me out." Ezekiel grumbled to himself, tossing a fistful of grass blades to the side.
Cailen would have scolded him for calling his sister a brat if it weren't for the fondness he could hear behind the name.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Cailen asked softly, only to receive a shrug in response. "I hope you weren't scared to tell us. Zeke, we don't want you to feel like you have to hide anything from us." Cailen explained even though he's positive he's told Ezekiel this many times.
"I- I wasn't scared..." Ezekiel admitted, glancing between the grass and his father. "I just didn't... I didn't know how to tell you. I didn't know how to bring it up and yeah... I guess I was a little... unsure of how you'd react." Ezekiel shrugged.
"Zeke, love... you never have to worry about any of that, unless you're coming to tell us you've just murdered someone, you have nothing to worry about, okay?" Cailen told him, reaching out to pluck a piece of grass off his knee.
Ezekiel smiled slightly and gave a nod of his head.
"Yeah... I know. I- I don't know what I was thinking." Ezekiel mumbled.
"How'd you find them?" Cailen questioned.
He thought showing interest might show Ezekiel that he really was okay with this, because of course, he was.
There was no jealousy of any sort, there wasn't any anger or hurt, none whatsoever.
Cailen knew the feeling of being unsure about having more than two parents. He knew about not wanting to hurt one of them, but now, he also knew about that not being an issue.
Elise and Patrick Emery were people Ezekiel cared about, people who had played an important role in Ezekiel's life, and therefore, they played an important role in Cailen's.
"It wasn't hard, I remembered from when I was a kid that they were buried here. I just had to ask one of the workers to take me to the right grave." Ezekiel shrugged.
Cailen could tell Ezekiel still felt a bit unsure about the whole thing and he wanted to fix that.
"We should bring some flowers sometime, or you know... you could. I don't want to-" Cailen said a bit awkwardly.
He just realized that maybe Ezekiel didn't want them to come here, which was fine... It might hurt a bit but Cailen could understand the reasons.
"No- That... That would be nice." Ezekiel nodded, sending his father a small smile, though Cailen could see the sadness behind it.
"What's wrong, love?" Cailen asked, eyeing his son for any indication as to what could be wrong.
Ezekiel took a moment, chewing on his bottom lip as his eyes fell on the grave infront of them.
"I just... I don't remember them." Ezekiel stated a bit sadly. "Like- I remember the idea of them, right? But it's mostly just blurred faces and random voices. I don't actually remember what they looked like or sounded like... It's just a bit odd."
"Well, you were fairly young when they passed away, that's not uncommon. In fact... It'd be pretty remarkable if you could remember things from when you were four years old." Cailen explained gently.
Ezekiel nodded again before letting out a long breath of air.
"I think they would have liked you and Dad." Ezekiel stated a bit randomly, sort of taking Cailen by surprise.
"Well, I hope so. I would hate to be a disappointment to them." Cailen said honestly.
He hopes that, and that they were happy with how Asher and Cailen raised Ezekiel.
"I suppose we should be getting back." Ezekiel sighed as he started brushing himself off and stood.
"Probably. Dad's probably trying to fend Tripp off all the snacks." Cailen teased as he stood as well.
Ezekiel smirked at this, nodding in agreement before he was suddenly wrapping Cailen up in a hug.
Cailen was a bit surprised at first, but quickly wrapped his arms around his son, holding him tight.
"I love you, Papa." Ezekiel said over Cailen's shoulder, squeezing Cailen a bit tighter.
"I love you too, Zeke." Cailen replied immediately before pulling away from his son.
Before Ezekiel could step away though, Cailen pulled him in by the neck and placed a kiss to his forehead- something he was afraid he wouldn't be able to do for much longer because he was getting so tall.
"I don't know what they looked like either, but one of them must have been pretty tall. Did you have another growth spurt?" Cailen asked teasingly as they started walking back towards the car.
"I don't know... But it's not hard to look tall when compared to you." Ezekiel teased back.
Cailen scoffed at this, reaching out to gently smack Ezekiel upside the head, but the boy ducked out of the way and jogged ahead a few steps to keep out of Cailen's reach while laughing.
