Chapter 26

Finally, he spoke in a low, measured tone. "Your father...he's gone." The words hung in the air like a heavyweight, and the woman felt her heart sink. She had known it was a possibility, but hearing it confirmed was still a shock.
She took a deep breath and tried to steady herself, but the tears were already streaming down her face.
"Gone where?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The man shook his head. "I don't know," he said.
"He just...disappeared." The woman felt a surge of anger and frustration.
How could her father just vanish like that? And why hadn't anyone told her sooner? She wanted to demand answers, but she knew there was no point. All she could do now was try to find out what had happened and hope that her father was still out there somewhere.
I noticed his eyes fixated on me, his expression guarded and wary. I could sense his unwavering determination to hear the words that he had been waiting for.
The air was thick with tension as we stood there, facing each other in silence. I knew that he wouldn't rest until he heard me say it, no matter how much I tried to avoid the inevitable. With a deep breath, I finally mustered the courage to speak the words that had been weighing heavily on my mind.
"I knew he wasn't going to let it go until I said it," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. The moment the words left my lips, I could see the relief wash over his face, and I knew that I had made the right decision. I muttered under my breath, "It was stupid, it doesn't matter." My cheeks flushed with embarrassment as I pulled the blankets up to my face, seeking refuge from the world.
I was curled up in bed, trying to keep warm under the covers. But suddenly, he reached over and snatched the blankets away from me. I gasped in surprise and shivered as the cold air hit my skin. He didn't say a word, just pulled the blankets over himself and settled back into his own comfortable cocoon.
I glared at him, feeling a mix of annoyance and amusement at his childish behavior. Lily looked up at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty. She took a deep breath before speaking. "I don't know if I should," she said softly.
He leaned in closer, his eyes searching hers. "Please," he whispered. Lily hesitated for a moment before finally giving in. "Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Damian's voice rumbled with a low growl, sending a shiver down her spine.
My heart raced as I stood before him, his piercing gaze fixed on me. His eyebrows were furrowed in anger, and I couldn't help but gulp nervously. I watched as he clenched the blankets tightly in his hand, his jaw set in a firm line. "He said he'd replace my father," I whispered softly, my eyes fixed on the ground.
The words hung heavily in the air between us, and I could feel the tension building. I knew I had to tread carefully, or things could quickly spiral out of control. I waited for his response, my heart pounding in my chest.
The silence stretched on, and I wondered if he was going to explode in anger. But then, to my surprise, his expression softened slightly. "I know," he said, his voice low and gruff. "But he can't replace your father. No one can." I looked up at him, surprised by his words.
For a moment, I saw a flicker of something in his eyes - was it sadness? Regret? I couldn't be sure. "I miss him," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. "I know," he said again, his voice gentle this time. "We all do." She furrowed her brow, her eyes fixed on him. "What does that mean?" she asked, her voice laced with confusion. He looked at her, his expression inscrutable. For a moment, there was silence between them, the only sound the soft hum of the air conditioning. Finally, he spoke.
"It means," he said slowly, "exactly what it sounds like." Damian's piercing gaze bore into me as he fired off his questions with lightning speed. I felt my heart racing as I struggled to find the right words.
"N-nothing," I stammered, my voice betraying my nerves. "He just said that he wanted to be like a father to me." My eyes darted around the room, avoiding the gaze of the person in front of me.
I couldn't shake the feeling that I was in trouble, that I had done something wrong. But I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was.
All I knew was that I was scared and that I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
The room fell silent as she spoke, her voice low and menacing. Her eyes bore into his, daring him to challenge her.
"If I find out you're lying," she repeated, her tone leaving no room for doubt, "you're getting punished, understood?" He swallowed hard, nodding quickly in response.
She was not one to be trifled with, and he knew better than to test her patience. I felt a chill run down my spine as Ace's scowl deepened.
He slowly rose to his feet, towering over me with his broad shoulders and muscular frame. I couldn't help but feel intimidated by his presence.
"Punished?!" she chirped up, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and defiance.
She knew she was being too brave, but she couldn't help herself. The thought of being punished for speaking out was too much to bear. Ace's eyes narrowed as he snarled, "Have you got a problem with that?" "No"
"Rise and shine, my dear," said Mom as she gently nudged her daughter awake. "It's time to prepare for another day of learning." With a yawn and a stretch, the young girl rubbed the sleep from her eyes and began to get dressed.
As she finished tying her shoes, Mom called out, "I'll be your chauffeur today, my love. I'll be dropping you off and picking you up from school." The girl smiled, grateful for her mother's help, and grabbed her backpack before heading out the door. As soon as he stepped out of my room, I let out a deep sigh of relief.
The tension that had been building up inside me dissipated, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me. For what seemed like hours, he had been sitting there, staring at me with his piercing eyes, his presence suffocating me.
But now, he was gone. I could finally breathe again. As he approached, a weight settled in her chest, constricting her breath. She tried to ignore it, but it was impossible. The closer he came, the heavier the feeling became, until it was all she could focus on.
She stood in front of the mirror, carefully selecting each piece of clothing and putting it on with deliberate slowness. She knew she was running behind schedule, but she couldn't help but savor the moment.
The fabric of her blouse felt soft against her skin, and the weight of her jeans was comforting. She took a deep breath and looked at herself in the mirror, admiring the way the outfit came together.
