THE GIFT OF FATE(III)

The destruction and near annihilation of one the most powerful families of ancient magic did not bring joy to any witch or wizard. Instead, it threw them into a state of mourning and great depression. They had not just lost a highly skilled wizard that remained unrivalled, even in death, but also a beacon of light, hope and peace. The Vischer family were the epitome of pure warmth untainted by the quest for power, and the fact that their story ended in such a tragic manner proved to anyone that no one was above corruption.
No one is above deviation. No one is too good to sin, or go astray. No one is free of the urge to do wrong or to perpetuate evil. Thus, no one should rest on their oars, setting themselves or anyone else for that matter on a pedestal of absolute purity or goodness. If even the Vischer family, with their longstanding reputation and penchant for goodness, could fall victim to the lure of deviant magic, irrespective of whatever reasons lay behind it, there is no one who cannot be trapped by the dark, vicious web of deviant magic.
Since then, all forms of deviant magic were frowned upon. Unless it was a natural gift obtained during Awakening, no witch or wizard was allowed to practice deviant magic. If Mother Magic did not deem you worthy of such gift, you had no business pursuing that kind of magic. There could be no negotiations.
Reforms were implemented and new measures were put in place to forestall the subsequent study of such forms of magic by unauthorized individuals. Severe consequences awaited those who persevered in their pursuit of deviant magic. The capital punishment, death, was executed if it was determined that the offending party was tainted beyond redemption.
Despite the depressing situation, some good did come out of the assault on the Vischer family. Due to Anthony Vischer’s habits of recording his experiments and findings, his journals were handed over to Asociaciόn de Maxia, the newly created Association of Magic at that time. Witches who Awakened such gifts could apply for a permit to make use of them for further study within a specified period of time.
However, only the relatively harmless materials were accessible. Their dubious and rather diabolical counterparts were locked up in the deepest crypt within the Association, sealed with the most powerful magic and destined to never see the light of day again.
Evanora Vischer was rescued and subsequently rehabilitated. However, the trauma she suffered by virtue of her imprisonment, torture and subsequent misuse of Fate magic left wounds too deep to be healed by mere counselling.
She struggled to adapt to the outside world and lived as a recluse for most of her life, only interacting with Henrietta and her children.
This however, did not stop her from performing her duty to the realm of Magic. She was able to detect the slight fluctuations in fate and upon closer inspection, realised they were whispers, barely audible but imbued with power beyond compare. She dubbed them Flüstern des Schicksals. And that name was a fitting one, for they were truly whispers of fate indeed.
Like her father, she was blessed with the uncanny ability to decipher the identities of various entities, bestowing upon them a name that encapsulated their essence in its entirety. For in the supernatural world, a name is not just a fancy word for reference. A name represents an identity, a dimension, a peephole into the mysteries surrounding any entity.
Tapping into her gift allowed her to understand the message passed by the whispers of fate, and she issued timely warnings to the overlords of the realm of Magic, rousing them from the depression and overall lethargy that blanketed the entire realm due to their internal war.
The Vischer family would not be reinstated, even if every other witch or wizard, of pure blood or otherwise, doused themselves in melancholy over and again. Thus, it was useless, foolish even, to continue to mourn what could have been while the ‘spawns from hell’ forged ahead with their plans to annihilate humans, witches and wizards alike.
No matter how much one prepares for battle, the possibility of death and loss can never be ruled out. Not when it concerned a war of such magnitude. The Great War led to the deaths of several ancient witches and wizards. Were it not for Evanora, the demons would have been successful in taking over the entire world.
However, this victory came at a steep cost.
The ecosystem that supported pure magic and in turn nourished the wizards was destroyed by the imprint of the demons, and pure magic dwindled into oblivion, leading to a drastic decline in the number of wizards. No wizards implied no continuity of life for the kingdom of magic, and the witches felt the depths of despair.
Evanora once again saved the day by manipulating the fate of the witches. A ritual was done, and the remaining wizards sacrificed their lives for the continuity of their race, etching their names in the sands of time and the minds of all witches henceforth. They were the true warriors.
Their ashes were buried and a tree sprang forth from that spot. This is known as Az élet faja, the Tree of Life. It was protected by the remainder of the ancient witches until the age of the High Witch and the Witch Council. The witches protect this tree with their lives; they know that this is their sole chance of survival. The sacrifice of their brothers cannot be in vain.
Even though witches cannot physically reproduce, they can forge bodies from special materials through the use of magic and place their seed inside of them. They then lay the body at the foot of the Great Tree (the Tree of Life). The Tree of Life determines which body is worthy of life and breathes life into that body. And thus, a witch is born.
