CHAPTER 12: JEALOUSY
Amelia's POV
We get out of the car and Sylvester grabs a hold of my hand. "Personal space much?" I joke.
"You think I'd want to be this close to you? If we're six feet apart, they're never going to believe us." He explains.
I laugh and say, "At least your hand isn't sweaty."
"That's because I'm not nervous yet." He says, looking away.
"We're going to be fine. As long as they don't make us kiss." I add.
"Don't worry. I'd never in a million years kiss your nasty lips." He says smirking.
"Good. Let's keep it that way." I say, pretending to kiss his cheek.
He dodges me, and I almost trip forward. He immediately wraps an arm around my waist, and I say, "Shit. Forgot I was wearing heels."
"I will never understand how you can survive walking on sticks." He says chuckling.
"I like looking taller." I say smiling.
He bites back a smile and continues guiding me around the building. We make it to the entrance of a large ball room, and he unenthusiastically says,
"They have a buffet!" I say excitedly. Yay!
Before I could drag Sylvester to the food, he tightens his hold on my waist. "We have to talk to my parents first." He says.
"Right. Totally didn't forget." I say.
He guides me to his parents, who are currently talking about a trip they took over the summer. They notice Sylvester, and leave the group.
His mom kisses his forehead, and I try my best not to look awkward. "This is my girlfriend Amelia." He says.
I reach to shake their hands and say, "It's nice to meet you."
His dad shakes my hand, and says, "I'm Connor.
"And I'm Amanda. You're so pretty! I'm glad my son won't have ugly children." She says excitedly.
I nervously laugh and Sylvester brings me back to his side. "Anyways, we're gonna get some food." Sylvester says, subtly dragging us away.
"They seem nice." I say, grabbing a plate.
"Wow, you guys even get your own chef!" I say, seeing they're serving steak.
He laughs and says, "Wait until you see the dessert bar."
We both grab a plate of food and sit at an open table. "Does the person hosting the auction really talk fast like in the movies?" I ask.
"Unfortunately, no. They tried that one year, and a lot of old people couldn't understand." He explains.
"Do you guys ever bid on anything?" I ask.
"Usually on the trips, even if my parents end up letting it go to waste." He says.
"Sylvester!" I hear someone say excitedly.
I turn around and see Tiffany. Of course she's here.
She doesn't even notice me, and tries to hug Sylvester. He quickly stops her wrists, from moving any closer. This looks so awkward.
"Tiffany, didn't know you were attending this event." He says, obviously uncomfortable.
I decide whether I should leave to get food/give them a moment, or stay. But Sylvester's eyes are pleading me to stay. Or he just likes looking at you with wide eyes. I personally think we're getting mixed signals. I'm not going to be a dick, that's his thing.
"Ya, you know how wealthy parents love showing off." She says laughing, as if she doesn't do that.
She glances at me and wickedly grins. "Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot yours passed away. My condolences." She says, faking sweetness.
Before I could react, Sylvester automatically stood up and threw his drink at her. "Leave us the fuck alone. If you step even 10 feet near us, I will not hesitate to call security." He says, in a low angry voice.
She huffs angrily and says, "I don't even get why you hang out with this ugly bitch. She doesn't belong with our kind." Our kind? What the actual fuck?
Without thinking, I stand up and slap her face. I can tell Sylvester is grinning beside me. Awwww! Couples that support each other, stay together.
"Your kind? I'd rather be me, than be a dumb caked face bitch, who has no idea what to do without daddy's money. At least my parents taught me how to have manners and work hard.
Not everything will get handed to you in life, so I just feel sorry for your pathetic ass."
"At least I have one." She mutters, looking around to see if anyone's watching. Why would people care about random teenagers?
"Actually-" Sylvester chimes in, but I just pat his arm.
"You have something on your dress." I say, pointing. She looks down, and I pour my drink on her.
She gasps and stomps her foot. "You two deserve to rot in hell."
"Guess we'll see you there." I say, waving as she stomps away.
Sylvester gently grabs my wrist, and I fake a smile. I feel ready for my daily breakdown! That usually makes me laugh... I'm sorry, I tried.
"Hey, let's get out of here. The dessert table sucks." Sylvester says, trying to cheer me up.
I nod, and he grabs my hand. "Is it okay if we say goodbye to my parents?" He asks.
"Of course." I say.
He spots them near the stage, and says, "We're gonna get out of here. Good luck on the auction."
"Okay, see you at home. It was nice meeting you, Amelia darling." His mom says.
"We should all have dinner some time." His dad says.
Sylvester nervously laughs and says, "Ok, see you."
I follow Sylvester to his car, and he grabs something from the trunk. "Why are you being suspicious?" I ask.
He sits in the driver's seat and hands me a gift bag. "I'm sorry I dragged you to this place." He says sheepishly.
I take out the tissue paper, and smile. "Awww it's so cute!" I say.
"I know it's not much, but everything Tiffany said was bullshit. She's just jealous she doesn't get to hang with me." He says smirking.
I laugh and give him a quick hug. "Do you want to get ice cream?" He asks.
"Sure." I say, hugging my stuffed animal.
"Are you going to name him?" He asks, while driving.
"Hmm... I'm going to name him Quackers." I say excitedly.
"I think it fits him." He says approving.
He parks in front of an ice cream shop, and Sylvester opens the door for me. We walk in and I peer at the display case.
"This place is so cool!" I claim, when I see they make the ice cream look like animals.
"Do you know what you're getting?" He asks.
"Definitely the duck." I say bouncing with joy. I love this duck inspired date. ...It's not a date. Stop I tell my subconscious mind
Sylvester orders and I can tell the worker is into him. She makes our ice cream, and then hands us napkins.
I glare at her, when I see she slipped him her number. She smirks back and winks at Sylvester. Why do you care? You said you don't like him like that, my subconscious said.
"We should hang out sometime." She says, before serving another customer.
Sylvester and I walk around outside, while we eat. "Do you know her?" He asks.
"No." I answer.
"Why'd she say we should hang out?" He asks confused.
"She gave you her number." I deadpan.
"No she didn't." He says, not believing me.
I point at his napkin and he notices the number. "Should we prank call her?" He asks with a laugh.
I don't find it funny, and he raises an eyebrow. "Wait. Are you jealous?" He asks.
I scoff and say, "No. Why would I be jealous?"
"Because you like me." He says.
"What?" I ask, feeling my heart pound in my chest. Why is it so noisy? I'm pretty sure he's kidding...
"I'm just kidding, Amelia." He says, throwing away her number.
"Look how pretty the sunset is." I say, admiring pink and orange ombré.
I hear a camera noise, and glance at Sylvester. "Your outfit looks good with the sky." He says with a red face. I'm pretty sure it's just from the heat...
We decide to take a few photos together, and I laugh at the ones Sylvester blinked. "I can't help it." He says with a pout.
"Awwww, it's okay babe." I say, patting his cheek.
"Babe..." He whines.
We laugh as we return to his car. Soon we're at Esme's house, and he opens my door. I step out, and he sweeps me off my feet. Literally.
"Looks like I'm sweeping you off your feet." He says with a wink.
I playfully roll my eyes, and laugh. He sets me down in front of my door, and says, "Thank you again for agreeing to do that."
"It was cool. I got Quackers out of it." I say, holding up my stuffed animal.
"I'll see you at school?" He asks.
"I guess." I say, sighing with fake disappointment.
"Asshole." He mutters, before kissing my forehead.
"And you're still a dick." I say grinning.
He walks away, and I step into my room. I let Quackers sit on my bed, while I change. Technically, you guys never broke up. I roll my eyes at my thoughts.
