Chapter 22: Jennifer's Fear
Nicholas' father, Patrick Wild was not happy when his wife, Jennifer Wild informed him about their son's close relationship with Christabel Bloom. At first, he thought it was a joke because he had only thought Christabel Bloom was simply a woman who Nicholas had pitied because of her accident and her history in sprinting which he had a great admiration for.
"How close is their relationship?" Patrick asked, paying attention to his wife.
"Their relationship is close enough to be considered as a threat," Jennifer replied. "I feel we should look into it so we won't end up making a big mistake by neglecting her."
"I don't think she is a threat," Patrick voiced out his mind after moments of considering the possibilities of Christabel Bloom ruining their plans for Nicholas Wild.
"How would you know?" Jennifer asked.
"You seem to forget I have the ability to know everything that is going on around me," Patrick answered. "There is nothing that is happening to my family that can be hidden in secret."
Jennifer laughed coldly and stepped closer to him. "Patrick Wild, is that why you are so proud? Do you think you can figure out what is going on in your son's mind? Do you think you knew he would ask for independence before he did?"
Patrick went on with his laughter and only stopped when he discovered she was not finding it funny. "I am the boss here," he bragged slowly. "Listen carefully, Jennifer Wild. No one understands our son, Nicholas Wild better than I do. I know what goes on in his mind every time he is alone in his room and thinking. I know he is afraid of rebellion even though the spirit is very much alive in him."
Jennifer shook her head. Her husband was not listening to what she had to say about their son and it was putting her in a bad situation where she felt like screaming out loudly.
"You are not listening to me," she complained. "I am here trying my best to explain to you that our plans to make our son get married to Jessica Bolton might be affected by that woman named Christabel Bloom. Instead of seeing my fear as a threat, you decide to see it as a joke?"
"It is a joke," Patrick squeezed his face while standing to his point. "There are other things in Nicholas' life that I should be afraid of when it comes to his marriage with Jessica Bolton. The woman's name you just mentioned is one of the least things that can stand between our son and his bright future."
Jennifer sighed as she bit her lips and moved away from her husband. She wanted to hiss and then complain. She wanted to hit his head with her palm so hard that he would have no other option than to listen to her. She wanted to do everything possible at the moment for him to consider her fear as a threat.
"Nicholas has been dull since the announcement of his marriage," she continued. "I feel he had a right to know what the pictures they were taken of him was going to be used for. He wasn't really pleased when he saw himself and Jessica Bolton standing together inside one of the major newspapers in the country."
Patrick had a nice laugh as the words of his wife struck his gentle heart. Then, he remembered how he had ensured that the wedding arrangements between his son and Jessica Bolton was made public.
"Don't you think it was too early for the world to know that our son was getting married to her?" She asked when he was done laughing.
"Nothing is too early my dear," Patrick informed her, walking past her to go to his study room in their large house. Two minutes later and he was back with the newspaper that carried the picture of their son and Jessica Bolton in his hand.
"Great!" Jennifer exclaimed as if she was excited. "You have the proof of our son's marriage in your hands. What are you going to do with it now?"
Patrick ignored her and searched for the page where the picture was proudly spread out in the newspaper, occupying a befitting dimension that would do the eyes of most weak men good.
"This picture must have been edited for better public viewing," he commented.
Jennifer turned. "I am not surprised at all if what you say is true because these days, the way the media works is slightly different from the way it worked during our time."
"I totally agree with you!" Patrick's face lit up as he turned to face his study room. A minute later he was back with a bottle of wine. The newspaper was no longer with him. He had dropped it back from where he had taken it from.
"Why are you not bothered about our son's marriage?" Jennifer asked as soon as he sat down.
"Why am I not bothered?" Patrick tried to repeat her question in a different way so he would find a way to explain to her how little her fear made him feel. "I am not bothered because I know the foundation of our family. I am not bothered because I know how hard I struggled to get to where we are today. If you feel a woman who I was angry at for wasting my son's time at the hospital is going to throw away all my hardwork into the dust because she feels she shares something called love with my son then you know little about me, Jennifer Wild."
Jennifer took a deep breath and spoke now in a fearsome whisper. "Mr. Wild, you have no idea what your son is really capable of doing, do you?"The tense silence hung for several seconds, finally broken by the sound of Patrick's phone. He plunged his hand into his pocket and eagerly snatched the device out. After a few seconds of exchange of important words between him and the caller, he hung up and turned back to Jennifer with a smug smile. "Well . . . it seems you are beginning to prove a point here. Someone just informed me that our son is with a woman who isn't Jessica Bolton."Download Novelah App
