Chapter 21 His Prejudice, Her humility

Bethany was delighted when the head designer of her team had asked her for ideas to complete their summer line. Ths summer line had been decided, and their highlight is summer outfit for outdoor activities like jogging. Many of the ideas had been explored so they had decided to go for a difficult one, something a lot of people would have ignored, yet something practical that a lot would need.
Bethany studied the design for a while before she went to the board it was drawn.
"Can I alter this a bit? " She asked even though she didn't think she needed their permission to do so.
"Okay." The elderly woman responded.
Kim was trying her best not to be subdued by Bethany's influence, even the girl's aura made her want to cower.
Bethany erased a part of the drawing and converted the trousers into shorts while the shirt into a crop top she stopped to observe their faces and she noticed they didn't look one bit impressed. There was nothing new about what she had just drawn.
Turning back, she smirked to herself and drew a longer pants and a normal sweat shirt but this time she added something by the side and on the neck.
"What is that?" Kim asked.
"To sell something ordinary at a ridiculous price you tag it with something extraordinary."
"The first one I drew is something we are all familiar with. Cut the cloth short for the heat. But this one is long, for those not comfortable with showing skin. We'll use aerator fabrics and by the side of the shirt is an ingrained mp3. On the neck is a small aerator that is on both side directed into the armpit, the area with the most sweat and the most odour. To market both successfully well tag the ordinary one with the extraordinary. Well call it fill summer jogging suit." She finished proudly and this time their faces was just like she wanted, she had successful slapped their indifference on their face and she could see the awe in their eyes. This was the expression she hadn't slept a wink yesterday to achieve.
B&W had to own the summer.
Alice looked at their lines for summer, the highlight for their line is the suit but she just really wanted to be sure they owned the summer, this wasn't just about owning the summer, it was about saving Adam and Bruce, so she met Valdez.
"Valdez, I heard there was a proposal for summer customized lingeries, night gowns and under wears. Stay hot, stay aerated right?"
"Yes, I designed it myself. You want to see it?" He asked as she bent to bring out the file.
That was what he wanted to submit before the president had presented the suit and since he was also satisfied with the suit and he had been busy working on it, he had tossed the design in his drawer.
Alice studied it for a while and took note of things she wanted to add. When she was done, she walked to Valdez and explained her idea to him and his eyes peaked with excitement.
"On our Broadway, the suit in the center, a lingerie by the side and a pyjamas, No a hot yet summer friendly sexy night gown, one not made with silk, those things are hot! Behind and on every corner will be men in our summer customized undies. Wait!! I can already see our theme, JoDa Fashion is comfort be it in the day or at night, our outfit or our undiesss. " He screamed at the end alerting the others.
"What is it Valdez? tell me." Lycan asked anxiously.
Before Alice could say anything, her phone beeped and it was a message from Adam.
"To my office. Now!" It read.
She excused herself quickly and headed to his office all the while her heart in her mouth.
"Am I in trouble?" She thought.
Adam paced up and down waiting for Alice to arrive. She had finally played her card and gullible him was berating himself for judging her without knowing her.
He heard a light knock before the door opened and there she stood, a small glass perched on her nose and her hair which was neat earlier this morning was a little rough now.
"Close the door." He grunted.
Alice swallowed hard. She really is in trouble.
"Sir." She called.
"Alice, why didn't you just work with your father if you were going to use his influence for your boss to go easy on you. White fashion house is one of the best. It may not have a base here in New York but you could create one, just like I did 2 years ago, then why choose my company when your father would ask me to treat you like an egg, even I haven't treated myself like an egg Alice. Even I didn't have it the easy way."
"Do you know the people I dislike most, liars and lazy people who use their influence to get what they want." He almost yelled cornering her.
Alice was stunned, she couldn't form a word.
"I..I... Just really want to work here. Father may have just wanted to be caring, I'm sure he didn't mean any harm." She tried to explain.
"Oh, he didn't mean any harm, he meant insult. Do you know what you told me? Don't overwork my girl Adam." He mimicked, his anger increasing.
"I am your Boss Alice, why do I get told what to do and what not to do. In your spree to impress your father, to climb up the ladder Alice, you can't use me." He deadpanned.
Alice was dumbfounded. How had he come to such a solution and it wasn't exactly a lie if she were to be honest. She is actually using him to better herself.
When he started, she thought she would cry, she thought she would beg him to stop but now she found that she couldn't cry. Crying is for the innocent and she isn't by any standards innocent.
"Sir, I am sorry from my father's intervention,he was just being caring and I'll make sure to tell him that you don't like a mix of personal life in business." She started slowly, her voice quiet.
"Sir, you are right, I want to climb up the ladder, I want to impress my parents, I want to feel among in my family and I think I know why you can't seem to trust me, you heard me that night in the garden right?"
She didn't wait for him to respond before she continued.
"I don't know the ways of the elites, I don't know the do's and the don't's. I don't have their charisma nor their charm, yet I was told I am a part one of their leading families. Sir, you are right, nobody gets anything on a silver platter we all have our struggles but imagine a child that can only seat now enlisted for a race. That is exactly what my situation looks like. I didn't choose you for some ulterior motive other than to better myself, because of the reputation you have managed to build for yourself and your company, impartial and business oriented, you allow even a rookie to present her design, an environment that gives equal chances to all. JoDa has the best designers and the selection process has never been corrupted. You don't care about the connections or the background, all you want is pure talent and all I want is to be able to rub minds with the gems you have, to grow with them." She finished looking into his eyes, pleading him to understand her.
Adam only huffed and went to his seat.
"You can't sweet talk me Alice."
"I am not trying to sir, forget your first impression of me and help me, all I ask you is let me grow under your wings." She pleaded moving closer to him.
"I've helped you enough Alice, I took pity on you by not inquiring for your resume for there's a high chance, you have nothinh compared to the others. I know your parents have been neglectful and I have played my part in helping you grow. The rest is in your hands. You either work for me with full dedication or you run back to your father's open arms." He declared staring straight at her.
Though he had just scolded her, Alice couldn't help but feel light, he had considered that she may have not had a strong educational background, maybe her school is an unknown school in the suburbs so he gave her a chance to out her talent to test and her dedication. He had our purchased her dignity for her Infront of other employees. Maybe it was because she knew him more than he knew himself, she could read between his actions and see behind his mask.
"You can't get rid of me so easily sir, I choose to work for you. I like seeing your face everyday." She added playfully.
Adam was bewildered. All rich people had something in common. They didn't like being scolded or even talked-down to, even him. Infact, that was the reason he had been angry with her in the first place. Her father had disregarded his authority and he used that as an opportunity to also scold her for his own prejudiced judgement, yet she had apologized, explained and was trying to lighten up the mood.
This just makes him feel like a fool
