Chapter Fifteen: A Bomb Ticking

Selena spent weeks studying Olivia, immersing herself in her persona, her mannerisms, her carefully crafted image. She’d mastered Olivia’s subtle smile, her graceful movements, her carefully chosen words. But beneath the surface, Selena remained acutely aware of the danger, the ever-present threat of exposure. Victoria, with her icy gaze and venomous whispers, loomed large in her mind, a constant reminder of the precariousness of her position.
Today's meeting with Victoria was a crucial test. It was a carefully orchestrated confrontation, a battle of wits, where Selena would have to maintain her composure, her carefully constructed facade, while simultaneously gathering information, anticipating Victoria's next move. The stakes were high. Failure meant not only the collapse of her carefully constructed persona, but also the potential ruin of Ezra's life and the unraveling of their carefully planned escape. She had to succeed.
Victoria entered the drawing-room, her silk dress rustling like the whisper of a viper. Selena, as Olivia, rose to greet her, her smile serene, her movements graceful.
"Let's drop the pleasantries, Olivia. I'll go straight to the point." she began, in an icy manner.
Selena/Olivia lets out a civil and polite smile towards Victoria.
"Of course, Mrs. Birmingham. Please, sit."
Victoria sits, her gaze sharp and assessing.
"Ezra is a foolish boy, easily swayed by charm and empty promises."
"I assure you, Mrs. Birmingham... My feelings for Ezra are genuine." Selena/Olivia said in return.
Mrs. Victoria Birmingham scoffed, as if she said something unbelievable
"Genuine? Don't insult my intelligence. I've seen your kind before. Social climbers, preying on vulnerable young men."
Selena/Olivia tries to maintain her composure, just like what she usually does whenever she is in her roleplay mode.
"Your words are hurtful, Victoria. But I won't allow your prejudices to cloud your judgment. My love for Ezra is real."
"Oh really? Then why do I have this feeling that you're hiding something?" Victoria spat out.
Selena/Olivia continues to stare at Victoria,
her eyes unwavering.
"I'm confident that any evidence you possess will only confirm the truth of my feelings for Ezra. I'm not afraid of the truth, Mrs. Birmingham. How about you?"
A tense silence hangs between them.
After a few minutes, Víctoria stood up from her chair.
"We shall see, Olivia. We shall see. This isn't over."
"I wouldn't have it any other way." responded Selena/Olivia.
Victoria finally exits, leaving Selena/Olivia alone, her carefully composed exterior finally cracking slightly. She lets out a silent breath, the tension finally easing.
"That was close. Too close. But I’m still in the game. And I’ll win..." she whispered to herself.
==============================
Ezra found Selena's apartment a haven of calm amidst the tempest raging in his life. The soft lighting, the comfortable furniture, the gentle scent of lavender – all created a sense of peace that was a stark contrast to the opulent, yet suffocating, atmosphere of his family's mansion. He sat on the plush sofa, a mug of steaming chamomile tea warming his hands, his gaze fixed on Selena, who sat opposite him, her expression thoughtful, her eyes filled with a mixture of concern and determination.
The clandestine meeting between Selena (as Olivia) and Victoria still hung heavy in the air, an unspoken tension that crackled between them. Ezra knew Selena had faced Victoria, had stood her ground against the formidable matriarch. He admired her courage, her unwavering resolve. He also knew the risks she’d taken, the potential consequences of her actions. He'd seen the subtle tremor in her hand as she'd recounted the encounter, the barely perceptible tightening of her jaw. She'd played her part flawlessly, but the strain was evident.
He wanted to reassure her, to express his gratitude, his unwavering support. But he also knew that words were insufficient, that actions spoke louder than any declaration of love or loyalty. He had to prove to Selena, to himself, that he was worthy of her trust, her sacrifice. He had to protect her, to shield her from the wrath of his family, from the machinations of Victoria.
"You did well today, Selena. Incredibly well."
Selena smiled faintly.
"It was… a performance. Nothing more."
Ezra took Selena's hand, while giving her a reassuring smile.
"You faced Victoria Birmingham, and you didn't flinch. That takes courage." he told her.
"It was necessary. For both of us." Selena squeezed back Ezra's hand.
"I know you're taking risks. I know Victoria won't let this go easily."
Selena meets Ezra's gaze, as she is touched by his concern towards her.
"I'm prepared for anything. As long as we're together, as long as our plan works…"
"I will make sure that nobody will hurt you. I will protect you... I promise." Ezra made a sincere promise towards Selena.
"I believe you. But we need to be prepared. We need a backup plan. A way out, just in case…" Selena became more serious.
They shared a long, lingering look, a silent promise passing between them. The unspoken words hang heavy in the air: a shared future, a battle yet to be won...
=================================
The mahogany of his study seemed to absorb the dim light of the late afternoon, mirroring the darkness settling in Mr. Birmingham's heart. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, the rich scent of his favorite scotch doing little to soothe the bitter taste in his mouth. Ezra's defiance, his impulsive decision to marry that… woman, continued to gnaw at him. He couldn't shake the image of Olivia's face, a face that seemed both alluring and unsettlingly inscrutable.
He'd always envisioned a different future for his son, a future secured by a strategic marriage, a union that would strengthen the Birmingham legacy. Ezra's choice felt like a betrayal, a rejection of everything he'd worked for, everything he'd instilled in his son. He couldn't understand Ezra's infatuation with this unknown woman, this social climber who seemed to possess nothing but charm and ambition.
He'd tried to reason with Ezra, to warn him, to guide him toward a more sensible path. But his son had been adamant, his resolve unwavering. The confrontation had left Mr. Birmingham feeling a profound sense of failure, a bitter acknowledgment of his inability to control his son's destiny. He'd disowned Ezra, a decision that weighed heavily on his conscience, yet one he felt compelled to make to protect the family's reputation, to maintain the illusion of control. But beneath the surface of his anger and disappointment, a nagging doubt persisted. Had he been too harsh? Had he missed something? Had he failed to see the genuine love in Ezra's eyes?
