CHAPTER 16

The oppressive atmosphere in the library thickened, and Naurah's pulse quickened. There was no doubt about it now—something was in the room with them, something that wasn’t human. The air hummed with an energy that made her skin prickle, like the calm before a storm. She instinctively reached for her magic, drawing the power she had mastered over the years. Her fingers tingled, a familiar sensation, but the tension in the room was unlike anything she had ever felt before.
“We need to stay calm,” Naurah said, her voice low and steady. She turned to face her team, all of them on edge, their eyes scanning the shadows. "There’s no turning back now. We know what we have to do, but we can’t rush this."
Danial nodded, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a tense urgency. His senses were on high alert, his eyes flickering as he scanned every corner of the room. The werewolf within him stirred, restless. He was itching for a fight, and Naurah could feel the weight of his control hanging by a thread.
Jian’s dark eyes narrowed as he crouched, his posture low and alert, the shadows around him shifting in response to his presence. "We’re not going to find it by standing here," he muttered, his voice like the whisper of wind through trees. "We need to keep moving. There’s more to this library than we’re seeing. The truth is hidden here, but it’s cloaked in magic."
“Jian’s right,” Alex chimed in, her melodic voice sharp with intent. She had her hands loosely on her hips, but her every muscle was coiled with readiness. “I can sense it, too. Something’s shifting. The walls are listening.”
Zariel, ever the joker, didn’t seem as shaken as the others, though the fire in his eyes burned brighter than usual. His phoenix instincts were as sharp as his humor. “Let me guess. We’re about to walk right into a trap, and everyone’s gonna act surprised when it goes off? Because that’s my favorite thing to do—be surprised.”
Naurah turned to face him. "It’s not about being surprised anymore, Zariel. We’re in the middle of a power play that’s been going on for who knows how long. If we’re going to stop this, we need to act as one."
The tension in the air grew thicker. Naurah could almost taste the energy as it swirled around them. She didn’t need to be a witch to know the place was alive with dark magic, ancient forces pulling at the very fabric of reality. The ritual Jian had uncovered was more than just some arcane spell—it was a gateway to another world, a rift that could unravel the very essence of existence. And she had no intention of letting it tear through this world.
“Alright,” Naurah said, her voice firm. “We split up. Stay in pairs. Keep your guard up. Jian, Alex, you two check the back. Zariel and Danial, search the shelves. I’ll check the archives.” Her gaze hardened. “This ends tonight.”
The team nodded, each member setting off in different directions, their every movement calculated and swift. Naurah watched as her friends dispersed, and then, with a deep breath, she turned to the far end of the library, where the older, dustier records were stored. There was something there—a clue, a piece of the puzzle—that would help her understand the connection between the school’s foundation and the strange occurrences. She could feel it in her bones.
As Naurah moved, her mind raced. She had always known that the school’s location was significant, but this? The weight of the magic here was far more dangerous than she had anticipated. Whoever had constructed this rift, whoever had bound this dark energy to the school, knew what they were doing. And they were using the students as pawns.
Her footsteps echoed in the silence as she approached the row of archives, her heart hammering in her chest. As she reached out to pull a dusty tome from the shelf, the room seemed to shift. The air grew colder, the shadows deeper. Something stirred behind her, a whisper too soft for her to hear, but loud enough to send a shiver down her spine.
Turning swiftly, Naurah’s magic flared in response. A flicker of movement caught her eye, but when she focused, there was nothing there. The shadows shifted once more, this time more pronounced. The temperature had dropped significantly, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She wasn’t alone.
"Is someone there?" Naurah called out, her voice steady despite the growing sense of dread. She extended her senses, searching for any trace of the magic that had been lurking in the darkness. There was something, something almost ancient—an entity that had been tied to this place long before she and her team had arrived.
Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet trembled. The bookshelf rattled, and the lights flickered again. From the shadows, a figure emerged, its form fluid, shifting between shapes like smoke in the wind. Naurah instinctively stepped back, her hands raised, her magic crackling at her fingertips.
The figure spoke in a low, menacing voice. “You shouldn’t have come. The rift is beyond your understanding, witch.”
Naurah narrowed her eyes. "Who are you?" she demanded. "What have you done to these students?"
The figure grinned, a smile devoid of warmth. "I am what they have become. I am the change they cannot remember. The rift is mine to control now."
With a flick of his hand, the room darkened further, the shadows swallowing up the walls. Naurah’s heart raced, her mind frantically working to come up with a plan. She could feel the entity’s magic tugging at the very fabric of the room, but she wasn’t about to let it take control.
The entity stepped forward, its presence suffocating. "You won’t stop it. The rift is opening, and soon, the world will be rewritten."
Naurah’s lips parted in realization. "You're the one who’s been erasing the students. You’ve been using them as vessels—pawns in your game to open the rift."
The figure nodded. “Yes. But you will not stop me. The school, the students, they are all part of the plan. You are too late. The rift will open, and all that you know will be gone.”
Naurah clenched her fists, the magic within her boiling to the surface. "Not if I have anything to say about it."
In an instant, the figure lunged at her, his form shifting into a more solid, grotesque version of himself. His hands were outstretched, tendrils of dark energy reaching for her. But Naurah was quicker. She raised her hands, and the magic within her flared in a brilliant burst of light.
The entity recoiled as the light clashed with his dark magic. He screeched in fury, his form flickering, but it wasn’t enough to stop him. “You think you can destroy me? You cannot even begin to comprehend the power I wield!”
“I’ve dealt with worse,” Naurah muttered under her breath, her eyes blazing with determination. With a quick chant, she summoned the power of the earth beneath her feet. The floor cracked, and stone rose from the ground like jagged claws, slamming into the entity and sending him flying back into the shadows.
But it wasn’t over.
The library shook violently, the walls groaning as if in pain. The entity’s laughter echoed through the room, dark and twisted. “You cannot stop the inevitable. The rift is opening.”
Naurah’s mind raced as she felt the magic surge. She knew they had to act fast before the rift tore through this world completely. "I need help," she whispered to herself, before sending a signal to her team.
The moment the message reached them, Zariel, Danial, Jian, and Alex burst into the room, ready for a fight. Danial’s eyes were wild with fury, the wolf within him fully awake, while Zariel's flames flickered at the ready. Jian’s shadows swirled protectively around him, and Alex’s voice began to hum with a siren’s song.
Together, they advanced on the entity, their combined powers pulsing with energy. The entity hissed, retreating into the darkness, but Naurah’s team wasn’t about to let him escape.
“We end this now!” Zariel shouted, his fiery wings spreading wide as he flung a bolt of flame at the entity.
The battle raged on, each member of the team using their unique abilities to weaken the dark force. Naurah’s magic weaved through the chaos, amplifying the power of her friends. They pushed forward, and with one final surge of energy, Naurah and her team broke through the entity’s defenses, their combined forces slamming into him with unrelenting power.
The entity shrieked as the magic hit him, his form disintegrating into a cloud of dark smoke, his voice fading into nothing.
But as the last remnants of the entity vanished, the room remained dark, and the rift... it had already begun to open.
Naurah’s heart sank as she realized the truth.
The battle wasn’t over. Not yet. The rift had been unleashed, and it was up to them to stop it before it consumed everything.
“Let’s finish this,” Naurah said through gritted teeth, stepping forward. "We stop the rift. Together."
