Chapter 29 - Into the dark

The next morning, as the first light of dawn broke through the canopy, the group packed up in silence. Their usual routine was gone, replaced by a heightened sense of unease. Evelyn could feel the weight of the unknown pressing down on them as they prepared to follow the man into the forest. The quiet of the morning was broken only by the sounds of footsteps and the clinking of supplies being stashed away.
Claire led the group, her eyes never leaving the path ahead, constantly scanning their surroundings. Ben walked beside her, his face set in a determined frown, while Sarah and Thomas moved closer to Evelyn, keeping their weapons ready. The tension was palpable, as though every movement carried the potential for danger.
They had been walking for hours, the thick forest surrounding them like a labyrinth. The trees towered above, their branches intertwining to block out the sun, casting everything in a dim, eerie light. The only sounds were the occasional birdcall and the rustle of leaves underfoot. It was almost too quiet, and Evelyn could feel the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end.
At the forefront, Claire's sharp eyes remained fixed ahead, but Evelyn could tell she was on edge. The way her gaze flicked from shadow to shadow told her that Claire, too, felt the weight of the unknown hanging over them.
"Where are we headed?" Ben asked, his voice quiet but carrying the uncertainty they all felt. "How much further?"
Evelyn glanced around, then back at Claire. "You think you know where we're going?"
Claire paused for a moment, scanning the forest before nodding. "The man... he's leading us to something, but I don't trust him. Not entirely. We need to stay cautious."
Evelyn agreed. The stranger had been too cryptic, too confident. He had told them the truth about the so-called 'hunters' in this land, but Evelyn couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more he wasn’t telling them.
Hours passed, the path growing steeper and more treacherous. As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows, the man appeared again, emerging from the woods ahead of them. This time, he didn’t speak; he just gestured for them to follow. There was no welcoming smile or explanation. Just the same cold, calculating look in his eyes.
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She gave the signal for the group to move forward, keeping her rifle close, eyes darting between the trees. The stranger led them deeper into the forest, and as they moved, Evelyn couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Every so often, she caught flashes of movement between the trees, just glimpses, as though something or someone was shadowing them. But when she looked directly, there was nothing there.
After what felt like hours, they finally arrived at a small clearing. The air was thick, oppressive. In the center stood an old cabin, its wood weathered and worn. A place long abandoned. The door was slightly ajar, the darkness inside seeming to pull at them like a magnetic force. But it wasn’t the cabin that made Evelyn’s blood run cold, it was the figures standing around it.
They were armed, dressed in dark clothes, their faces obscured by masks. These were the hunters the man had warned them about. The real threat. Evelyn’s heart pounded in her chest as she instinctively raised her rifle.
The man who had led them here stepped forward, his hands raised in mock peace. “They’ll be watching from the woods. Don’t do anything foolish.”
Evelyn’s mind raced. Why had he brought them here? This wasn’t the way to safety, it was a trap.
“What’s going on?” Ben asked, his voice low but tense.
The man didn’t answer immediately. He stood there, his cold gaze scanning the group. Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, he turned back to the cabin and walked inside, leaving the group standing in the clearing, unsure of what to do.
“Stay alert,” Evelyn whispered, her voice barely a breath. “I don’t trust this.”
Claire moved closer, her eyes narrowed. “We’ve walked right into a trap, haven’t we?”
Evelyn didn’t respond right away, her mind working through the possibilities. The man who had led them here had known about the hunters, but had he been working with them all along? Had he been part of their game from the start?
Before she could voice her thoughts, the sound of movement behind them made her freeze. She turned to see a group of figures emerging from the shadows, closing in from all sides. There were too many of them, at least a dozen. Evelyn’s grip on her rifle tightened, but she didn’t raise it just yet. She had to think. They had to find a way out.
One of the masked figures stepped forward. His voice was harsh, like gravel scraping against stone. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
Evelyn met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. “We’re just passing through. We don’t want any trouble.”
The figure laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. “Trouble? You’re already in it.”
In an instant, the group was surrounded. Claire’s eyes flicked to Evelyn, her expression hardening. It was a standoff. The air crackled with tension as Evelyn assessed their options. They could fight, fight their way through the hunters, try to escape into the woods, but they were outnumbered, and the element of surprise was long gone.
“We don’t want to hurt anyone,” Evelyn said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Just let us go, and we’ll leave.”
The hunter chuckled again. “You’re too late for that. You’ve already seen too much. You should’ve stayed away.”
With that, the situation escalated. Evelyn’s heart pounded in her chest, her instincts screaming at her to act. She had to make a decision fast.
