Chapter 4 The Alpha's Gaze
The gates of the fortress creaked open, revealing a sprawling courtyard filled with Lycans, all of them towering and strong, their eyes burning with a quiet intensity. Some looked at Lira with curiosity, others with wariness, but none of them were hostile. Their gazes were full of questions, and Lira couldn’t help but feel like she was being judged by their silent stares.
Damon led her forward, and as they moved deeper into the courtyard, the sound of footsteps echoed around them. It wasn’t until they reached the center of the courtyard that she saw him—standing tall and proud, his presence radiating authority and power.
The Alpha.
Damon stepped forward, his posture shifting slightly, as if he were preparing to bow. Lira couldn’t help but watch the Alpha closely. He was everything Damon had warned her about—intense, commanding, and undeniably powerful. His eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, she felt the weight of his gaze settle over her like a heavy cloak.
The Alpha didn’t speak right away. He simply regarded her, his piercing blue eyes studying her with an intensity that made her breath hitch. Lira shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny, but she refused to look away.
Finally, he spoke, his voice deep and commanding. “So, you are the one.”
Lira swallowed hard. “I... I don’t know what you mean.”
The Alpha’s lips curled into a small smile. “You are the last of your bloodline. The last of the ancient Lycans. And now... you are mine to protect.”
Lira stood before the Alpha, her heart hammering in her chest as his piercing gaze fixed on her. The courtyard around them had grown eerily quiet, as though the entire pack had been waiting for this moment. She could feel the weight of their collective attention on her, their curiosity and wariness swirling in the air. She felt small in comparison to them, their strength palpable, but there was something in her chest—something deep, something ancient—that began to stir at the Alpha's presence.
The Alpha was tall, his posture straight and commanding, but there was a grace to him that was almost predatory. His dark hair was cropped short, his jaw strong, and his eyes—oh, those eyes—were a deep shade of blue, almost silver, as though they could see right through her. His aura radiated authority, but beneath it, Lira could sense an undercurrent of something far deeper, something that called to the very core of her.
“You are the last of the Lycan royal bloodline,” he spoke again, his voice low and resonant, like a deep growl that vibrated through her. “But what else are you, Lira?”
She stiffened at the mention of her name, but there was no time to react before the Alpha continued.
“Do you know what you are capable of? What you are supposed to become?” His gaze never wavered, his eyes boring into hers as if he was searching for an answer she didn’t even know.
Lira swallowed hard, her mouth dry. What am I supposed to be?
She wasn’t sure how to respond. Everything she had learned over the last few days was so overwhelming. She had only just discovered her true nature, and now, standing in front of the Alpha, the leader of this entire pack, she was expected to understand it all, to step into a role she had never prepared for.
“I... I don’t know,” she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
The Alpha’s lips twitched into a small, knowing smile. “You don’t have to know everything right away. But you must begin learning quickly. The world is not kind to those who are ignorant of their power.”
Lira felt a shiver run down her spine. She wanted to ask him what that meant—what kind of power was he referring to? But before she could speak, Damon stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“Father,” Damon said, his voice steady but with a note of caution, “Lira is still adjusting. She needs time.”
The Alpha’s gaze flicked to Damon, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, he nodded once. “Time is something we don’t have much of, Damon. But I will give her that. For now.”
Lira’s mind raced. The Alpha’s son? Damon had never spoken much about his family, but this was a revelation she hadn’t anticipated. Her gaze shifted back to the Alpha, who was now watching her with a flicker of interest in his eyes.
“You are the heir,” the Alpha said, turning his attention back to her, his tone now more gentle, though still firm. “You carry the blood of those who once ruled over the Lycans. Your power, once unlocked, will rival even mine.”
Lira’s head swam at his words. She didn’t understand. Her? The heir? The one who would carry the blood of ancient kings and queens?
Damon stepped closer to her, his hand still resting on her shoulder. She could feel the warmth of his touch, grounding her in the midst of this overwhelming conversation. She looked up at him, seeking comfort in his eyes. He gave her a small, reassuring smile before turning back to his father.
“What do you want her to do?” Damon asked, his voice soft but serious.
The Alpha’s gaze darkened. “I want her to prepare. There are threats growing, Damon. The humans, the rogue Lycans... they will come for her. They will try to take what is rightfully hers. And I will not let that happen.”
Lira felt her breath catch. Threats? People will come for me?
The Alpha’s eyes softened slightly as he turned his attention back to her. “Lira, your heritage is not just a blessing; it is a burden. You will need to learn how to defend yourself, how to command the strength that lies dormant inside you. The pack will help you with that. Damon will help you.”
Lira nodded slowly, though she felt a growing sense of unease. She had thought she would find peace here, but it seemed like danger was already creeping at the edges of her world.
She glanced at Damon, who gave her a small but encouraging nod. But even his usual calm demeanor couldn’t hide the concern in his eyes. He, too, understood how much was at stake.
“Let me show you where you’ll train,” Damon said, breaking the tension that hung thick in the air.
Without waiting for an answer, he gently guided Lira toward one of the larger buildings on the edge of the courtyard. The Alpha’s gaze followed them for a moment before he turned to speak with his lieutenants, the weight of his leadership clear in every movement he made.
Inside the training hall, Lira was met with a surprising sight. There were other Lycans here, all focused on different forms of combat. Some were sparring with each other, their movements swift and calculated, while others worked on honing their strength with various training tools. But what struck Lira most was the raw power that seemed to pulse through the room, like an invisible current, connecting them all. She could feel the energy thrumming in the air.
“This is where you will learn to control your wolf,” Damon explained quietly, as they approached a mat in the center of the room where a tall, muscular woman stood, waiting. The woman had long dark hair and sharp eyes that assessed Lira with a look of cool professionalism.
“This is Lyra,” Damon introduced her. “She’s one of the best warriors in the pack. She’ll teach you how to fight and defend yourself.”
Lira nodded, swallowing her apprehension. She could tell immediately that Lyra was a force to be reckoned with. The woman’s stance was impeccable, and there was an ease to her movements that spoke of years of training.
Lyra offered a nod of acknowledgment. “I’ll start with basic defense, but we’ll move quickly. You’ll need to be fast, precise.”
Lira felt a flicker of nervousness inside her. I’ve never fought before. How am I supposed to keep up?
But Damon’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Trust in yourself, Lira. You have the strength inside you. All we need to do is bring it to the surface.”
Lira turned her focus back to Lyra, who motioned for her to step onto the mat. Her heart pounded in her chest as she did, but she pushed the fear aside, determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead. She had to. There was no other choice.
The hours that followed were a blur of intense training, sharp lessons, and moments of doubt. Lyra was a tough teacher, pushing Lira past her limits, testing her resilience and speed. And though Lira struggled, she could feel the power of the wolf within her respond, slowly at first, but with increasing strength. The more she trained, the more she understood that this wasn’t just about physical strength—it was about harnessing something primal, something ancient, that coursed through her blood.
By the end of the day, Lira was exhausted, her muscles aching, her mind spinning. But as the sun set behind the stone walls of the pack’s home, something inside her felt different. She had come a long way in a single day. The path ahead was still unclear, but she was no longer the same girl who had first stepped into the Lycan world.
Damon joined her outside as they walked back toward their quarters, the quiet night air wrapping around them.
“You did well today,” he said, his voice soft but proud. “I knew you had it in you.”
Lira glanced up at him, a small smile tugging at her lips. “I’m still trying to figure out who I am in all of this.”
Damon stopped and turned to face her, his expression serious. “You’re more than just the last of your bloodline, Lira. You’re a force to be reckoned with. And you won’t face any of this alone.”
Lira nodded, her heart swelling with an emotion she couldn’t quite name. There was still so much to learn, so much to understand. But with Damon by her side, maybe—just maybe—she could face whatever came next.Download Novelah App
