Chapter 28: Divided Loyalties

The tension from the all-hands meeting lingered in the air the following morning. Clara could feel it the moment she stepped into the office—a charged atmosphere that made every conversation sound like a whisper and every glance feel like a challenge.
The system’s interface appeared almost immediately, glowing faintly in her peripheral vision.
[Daily Objectives Updated.]
[Primary Objective: Neutralize remaining dissenters—In Progress.]
[Secondary Objective: Strengthen internal support—98% Complete.]
Clara exhaled slowly, the weight of the objectives settling over her. “Alright, let’s get to work,” she murmured.
Her first task was clear: address Tom Lang’s outburst at the meeting. He had made it obvious that his frustration ran deeper than simple office gossip. If left unchecked, his dissent could spiral into a bigger issue.
Clara found him in the break room just before lunch, sipping coffee and scrolling through his phone. He looked up as she approached, his expression guarded.
“Hey, Tom,” Clara said, keeping her tone casual.
Tom raised an eyebrow. “What’s up?”
“I was hoping we could talk,” Clara said, sitting down across from him. “About yesterday.”
Tom leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “What about it?”
“I get where you’re coming from,” Clara said. “I know the changes happening here feel sudden and disruptive. But I think we both want the same thing—a company that treats its employees fairly and operates with integrity.”
Tom snorted. “Is that what you think this is about? Integrity?”
Clara frowned, leaning forward slightly. “Isn’t it?”
Tom shook his head. “Elliot wasn’t perfect, but he wasn’t the real problem. The real problem is people like Diane Hartwell—people at the top who make decisions without thinking about the consequences for the rest of us.”
Clara hesitated, her thoughts racing. “You think Diane’s the problem?”
Tom nodded. “She doesn’t care about us. She only cares about the board and her bottom line.”
[New Insight: Tom Lang views senior leadership as disconnected and self-serving. Probability of alignment with Clara’s goals: 50%.]
Clara took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. “I get why you feel that way. But I think Diane’s trying to change things for the better. And I’m trying to do the same.”
Tom studied her for a moment, then sighed. “Maybe. But actions speak louder than words, Clara. If you want people like me to trust you, you’ll have to prove it.”
[Relationship with Tom Lang improved. Relationship Level: 60%. Status: Neutral.]
Clara nodded. “Fair enough. I’ll do my best.”
By early afternoon, Clara was focused on her next objective: strengthening support among employees who were on the fence. The system highlighted several individuals who had shown signs of shifting their views but hadn’t fully committed to supporting her efforts.
The first name on the list was Priya Patel. Clara had already made progress with Priya, but their relationship remained tenuous. Winning her over would require patience and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths.
Clara approached Priya’s desk cautiously, noting the way the other woman’s shoulders stiffened as she noticed Clara coming.
“Hey, Priya,” Clara said, forcing a smile.
“Clara,” Priya said curtly, her eyes flicking back to her computer screen. “What can I do for you?”
“I wanted to check in,” Clara said. “I know things have been... complicated lately, and I wanted to hear your thoughts.”
Priya glanced at her, her expression skeptical. “My thoughts?”
Clara nodded. “Yeah. You’ve been here longer than I have. You’ve seen how things work—or don’t work. If there’s something we can do better, I want to know.”
Priya hesitated, her gaze softening slightly. “Alright. You want my thoughts? Here’s one: you’ve made a lot of changes in a very short amount of time. People aren’t sure what to think of you yet.”
Clara frowned. “I understand that. But I’m not trying to make changes for the sake of change. I’m trying to fix the problems that have been holding this place back.”
“And you think you can do that without alienating half the office?” Priya asked, raising an eyebrow.
Clara met her gaze. “I’m trying to find a balance. But I can’t do it alone. I need people like you to help me.”
Priya studied her for a long moment, then sighed. “Alright, Clara. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. But don’t make me regret it.”
[Relationship with Priya Patel improved. Relationship Level: 55%. Status: Neutral.]
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of meetings, emails, and occasional conversations with coworkers. By the time Clara left the office, she felt a flicker of hope. The tide was beginning to turn, albeit slowly.
The system chimed softly as she stepped outside, displaying her updated progress.
[Daily Progress Report:]
[Primary Objective: Neutralize remaining dissenters—70% Complete.]
[Secondary Objective: Strengthen internal support—98% Complete.]
Clara smiled faintly, her determination steadying. “Getting closer,” she murmured.
[Acknowledged. Probability of long-term success: 90%. Prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.]
That evening, Clara sat at her kitchen table, reviewing her notes from the day. The system’s interface shimmered faintly in her vision, displaying a new notification.
[New Insight Unlocked:]
[Key Instigators Identified—Tom Lang and Priya Patel. Both individuals require continued engagement to align with organizational goals.]
Clara exhaled, her mind racing. Tom and Priya were clearly at the heart of the resistance within the company, but their motivations were different. Tom was driven by distrust of senior leadership, while Priya seemed more concerned with the pace and impact of change.
The system chimed again, displaying a new objective.
[New Objective: Develop tailored strategies to address individual concerns.]
Clara leaned back in her chair, her thoughts swirling. “Tailored strategies,” she murmured. “Alright. Let’s figure this out.”
