Chapter 17 The Blade Of Oblivion

The chamber shook violently as the towering guardian stormed toward them, its massive blade carving through the air with a bone-chilling hum. Every step it took reverberated through the crystalline cavern, sending cracks racing along the ground.
“Run!” Aros barked, stepping forward to intercept the guardian. His staff glowed bright, and with a sharp motion, he unleashed a wave of energy that collided with the creature’s chest.
The attack barely slowed it down. The guardian’s glowing red eyes narrowed, and it swung its blade with terrifying speed, forcing Aros to leap back.
“What is that thing?!” Alex shouted, scrambling to his feet and dragging Amira with him.
“It’s the Rift’s enforcer,” Aros said grimly, dodging another swing of the blade. “A construct designed to eliminate anything that threatens the Rift’s balance.”
“Fantastic,” Alex muttered. “We’re officially on the Rift’s hit list.”
Amira didn’t waste time with commentary. She grabbed Alex’s arm and pulled him toward the nearest crystalline pillar. “We can’t just stand here! We need to find a way out!”
As they ran, the guardian let out a deafening roar and raised its blade, which began to glow with an ominous red light. Aros barely managed to throw up a protective barrier as the guardian slammed the blade into the ground. The impact unleashed a shockwave that shattered several pillars and sent debris flying in all directions.
Amira ducked behind a fallen pillar, shielding Alex from the blast. “We can’t fight that thing! It’s too strong!”
“Thanks for stating the obvious!” Alex snapped, his voice muffled by the arm he had thrown over his head.
Aros landed near them, his expression strained. “The waystation’s energy matrix is failing. If the guardian destroys this place, we’ll be trapped here forever.”
“No pressure or anything,” Alex muttered, peeking out from behind the pillar. The guardian was scanning the chamber, its glowing eyes locking onto them with mechanical precision.
Amira frowned, her mind racing. “The hologram mentioned this was a Nexus—a crossroads between realities. There has to be a way to use it to escape.”
Aros nodded. “The central pillar. It contains a gateway, but activating it requires immense power. I’ll need time.”
“Well, you better start now,” Alex said, pointing at the guardian, which had begun advancing again. “Because I’m pretty sure that thing doesn’t care about giving you a head start!”
Aros didn’t hesitate. He sprinted toward the central pillar, his staff glowing as he began to channel energy into the crystalline structure. The pillar responded, its surface lighting up with intricate patterns and symbols.
Meanwhile, the guardian roared and raised its blade, focusing its attention on Aros.
“Oh no, you don’t!” Amira shouted, stepping into the open and firing her sidearm. The bullets struck the guardian’s armor, bouncing off harmlessly but drawing its attention.
“What are you doing?!” Alex yelled.
“Buying us time!” Amira replied, firing another volley. “Come on, you oversized tin can! Over here!”
The guardian turned toward her, its eyes glowing brighter. With a roar, it swung its blade, sending another shockwave racing across the chamber. Amira dove out of the way, barely avoiding the attack as the ground exploded behind her.
“This was a terrible idea!” she muttered, scrambling to her feet.
“Join the club!” Alex shouted, grabbing a shard of broken crystal and throwing it at the guardian. The shard bounced off the creature’s head, accomplishing little more than irritating it.
The guardian let out an enraged growl and turned toward Alex, who immediately regretted his life choices.
“Oh, come on!” he yelled, backing away. “It was just a rock! Let’s not overreact!”
The guardian lunged, its blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. Alex yelped and threw himself to the ground, narrowly avoiding decapitation.
“Alex, move!” Amira shouted, firing at the guardian again.
“I’m trying!” Alex retorted, scrambling to his feet and running toward another pillar.
Meanwhile, Aros was completely focused on the central pillar, his energy causing it to hum with power. The patterns on its surface began to shift and glow, forming a complex network of symbols that pulsed rhythmically.
“Hurry up, Aros!” Amira called, dodging another swing of the guardian’s blade.
“The gateway is nearly ready!” Aros replied, his voice strained. “But I cannot hold the matrix stable for long!”
Amira gritted her teeth, her gaze darting between the guardian and the central pillar. “We need to distract it long enough for Aros to finish!”
“Distract it?!” Alex said, his voice rising in panic. “With what? My sparkling personality?”
Amira ignored him, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a cluster of unstable crystals near the edge of the chamber. A plan began to form in her mind—a reckless, desperate plan, but their only chance.
“Alex!” she shouted. “Help me lure it toward those crystals!”
“What? Are you insane?!”
“Just do it!”
Reluctantly, Alex followed her lead, shouting and waving his arms to get the guardian’s attention. “Hey, big guy! Over here! Come and get us!”
The guardian roared and charged, its blade raised high.
“Now!” Amira yelled, sprinting toward the crystals with Alex close behind.
The moment they reached the cluster, Amira fired at the crystals, sending a cascade of energy surging through them. The unstable shards began to glow and vibrate, emitting a high-pitched whine.
“Run!” Amira shouted, grabbing Alex and pulling him away just as the crystals exploded.
The blast engulfed the guardian, sending it stumbling backward with a deafening roar. Its armor was scorched and cracked, but it wasn’t down yet.
“The gateway is open!” Aros called, his voice urgent. “We must go now!”
Alex and Amira didn’t need to be told twice. They sprinted toward the central pillar, where a swirling vortex of light had appeared.
The guardian let out a final, furious roar and raised its blade, preparing to strike.
But before it could, the energy from the gateway surged outward, enveloping the chamber in blinding light.
For a moment, everything was silent.
And then, they were gone.
