Chapter 36 The Fire And The Betrayal

The night was still, the air thick with the hum of distant traffic. Blair sat in the front passenger seat, her eyes narrowed as she studied the map displayed on the screen in front of her. Maya was driving, her fingers gripping the steering wheel with purpose. Jax sat behind them, his gaze flicking to the rearview mirror every few seconds. He was the lookout—always aware of their surroundings, ready for anything.
They were on their way to intercept Calder, the last obstacle standing between them and a future without Vincent's looming threat. His connections had already been dwindling, but Calder was the linchpin. If they could take him out of the equation, the rest would fall apart.
Blair's mind was sharp. This mission was personal, not just about survival or revenge, but about ending this war once and for all. And tonight, she had a plan.
They spotted him first. Calder, flanked by his two bodyguards, was walking out of a nondescript building, his head down as he checked his phone. It was the perfect opportunity. Blair tapped Maya’s shoulder, signaling her to stop.
Maya quickly spun the wheel, cutting through a narrow alley to block Calder’s path. The screech of tires echoed in the night, and before Calder could react, Blair was already out of the car.
Her movements were precise and fluid. Maya took the wheel again, gunning the engine forward, while Jax covered the rear. Blair approached Calder, her gun drawn and aimed right at his chest. “Don’t move,” she ordered, her voice cold.
Calder’s bodyguards reacted too late. Maya had already stepped out and used a smoke bomb to blind them. Jax fired a non-lethal shot to incapacitate them as they came at him, and Blair moved to Calder’s side, cuffing him.
"Let's go," she said, pulling him toward the car.
They had Calder. But not for long.
As they sped away, Blair realized that the heat was already on. She could hear the rumble of engines behind them, the faint sound of sirens cutting through the quiet night. The team pushed the car to its limits, weaving through streets and taking sharp turns.
Blair’s mind raced, calculating their next move. Calder’s security was closing in fast, and they had to lose them—fast.
She glanced at the rearview mirror, her eyes scanning the growing number of cars gaining on them. “We can’t outrun them forever.”
Maya nodded, not breaking her focus on the road. “We need a plan.”
Blair’s lips curled into a dangerous smile. “I have one.”
The team turned into an industrial district, the kind of place most people avoided after hours. Rows of warehouses, loading docks, and piles of unused equipment lay scattered around. It was the perfect place for their plan.
Maya swerved the car, taking them down an alley that led to a large warehouse—an industrial store filled with flammable materials. There were oil barrels, crates of chemicals, and a lot of explosive potential.
Blair’s heart raced as she prepared for the risky move. “We drive in and lay low. We’ll wait for them to catch up. Once they’re close enough…” She didn’t need to finish the sentence. The others knew exactly what she was thinking.
They drove deeper into the warehouse lot, hiding between stacks of crates. The sound of engines grew louder as Calder’s men closed in, driving recklessly.
Blair held her breath, her fingers clenched around the seat, waiting. The sound of tires screeching against pavement filled the air as the enemy vehicles drew nearer. The moment of truth had arrived.
“Now,” Blair barked.
Maya slammed the car into reverse, veering sharply toward an access road leading to another exit. Just as they rounded the corner, Blair fired a single shot into the air, striking a barrel near the building’s entrance.
The blast was deafening. The shockwave sent a rush of heat through the air as the explosion tore through the industrial building. Flames leaped into the night sky, and the earth seemed to tremble beneath their feet.
Blair’s heart skipped a beat as she glanced back. Calder’s men, who had been following them so closely, were now engulfed in a fiery storm. They couldn’t be saved.
“Nice work,” Jax said, his voice barely audible over the sound of the blast.
They drove away quickly, the explosion fading in the distance. For a moment, there was silence—an eerie kind of peace as the team caught their breath.
But Blair wasn’t celebrating yet. She knew there would be more to this than just one successful mission.
As they reached a safe house a few miles away, they stopped the vehicle and turned to Calder. He was still alive, but barely—his hands, mouth, and eyes sealed with tight black tape, rendering him unable to see or speak. His hands trembled, his face contorted in a mask of fury, but there was nothing he could do.
Blair stepped off the vehicle and fixed her gaze on him, her eyes cold as she observed him. “This is where you’ll stay, Calder.", she said, gesturing towards the safe house, "We’ll be in touch when we need answers. Don’t bother trying to escape. You’re not getting out of here.”
Calder glared at her, but Blair knew he couldn’t do anything. He was their prisoner now, and he would stay that way until they decided his fate.
Just as the team was beginning to breathe a sigh of relief, the unexpected happened.
Blair’s phone buzzed, pulling her attention away. It was a number she didn’t recognize, but when she answered, a cold voice spoke on the other end.
“It’s not over, Blair.”
Blair froze. The voice was unmistakable.
“Vincent,” she muttered, a sickening feeling knotting in her stomach.
“You think you’ve won? You’re nothing but a pawn in a game you don’t understand. You’ll never win this war.”
Before she could respond, the line went dead.
Blair’s blood ran cold as she turned to Maya and Jax. “They’re here.”
The sound of screeching tires filled the air as a convoy of cars sped toward them. Blair barely had time to react before Leo’s face appeared in the window. His eyes were sharp, cold—harder than she had ever seen them before.
“Step forward Blair!” Leo ordered, his voice icy.
The team froze, realizing they were cornered. They were caught between Vincent’s men and a whole new level of danger.
Blair’s mind raced. She could feel the weight of this new confrontation bearing down on her. The stakes had just been raised—and Leo, once a potential ally, had now become their most dangerous adversary.
And for the first time in a long time, Blair was unsure of what would happen next.
