CHAPTER 61

The path stretched endlessly before them, the horizon blurring into a silver haze. Kieran’s hand rested instinctively on his sword hilt as he led the group forward, his senses heightened. The oppressive silence weighed heavily on all of them, broken only by the occasional crunch of gravel beneath their boots.
The aftermath of the Trial of the Heart lingered like a phantom. The raw truths they had confronted left a scar deeper than any physical wound, but it also strengthened their resolve. Each of them walked with a newfound determination, the bond between them stronger than ever.
But unease settled over Elira as she scanned their surroundings. Something felt wrong.
“Kieran,” she said quietly, stepping closer. Her voice was calm, but her silver-blue eyes flickered with worry.
He glanced at her, his brow furrowed. “You feel it too?”
She nodded. “We’re being watched.”
Viktor, walking a few paces behind, tensed at her words. “I thought it was just me,” he muttered, his dagger already in his hand.
Lila, bringing up the rear, had her bow at the ready, her gaze sharp. “If it’s the Dominion, they’re playing the long game. No movement, no sound, but I can feel them.”
Kieran slowed their pace, his hand tightening around his sword hilt. “Stay close. We move together.”
They pressed on, their steps quieter now, each of them alert to the smallest sound. The mist around them thickened, swirling unnaturally as if alive.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle pierced the air. Kieran’s instincts kicked in, and he drew his sword just as a volley of arrows rained down.
“Ambush!” he shouted, raising his blade to deflect an arrow aimed at his chest.
The group scattered, each of them diving for cover. Dominion soldiers emerged from the mist, their dark armor gleaming ominously. Their movements were precise, their formation unyielding.
Lila loosed an arrow, her aim unerring as it struck a soldier square in the throat. “We’re outnumbered!” she called, her voice steady despite the chaos.
Viktor darted between the attackers, his dagger flashing as he struck with lethal precision. But for every soldier he felled, two more seemed to take their place.
Elira unleashed a burst of silver magic, the tendrils crackling as they lashed out, sending soldiers sprawling. But the effort left her breathing hard, her curse threatening to surge.
Kieran fought with relentless determination, his sword a blur as he deflected strikes and countered with his own. But even he couldn’t ignore the sheer number of enemies surrounding them.
“We can’t hold them off forever!” Viktor shouted, his voice strained as he parried a blow.
“They’re funneling us into a trap,” Elira realized, her heart sinking. “We have to retreat!”
But retreat wasn’t an option. The soldiers tightened their circle, herding them toward the edge of the clearing. Kieran’s mind raced, searching for a way out.
Then he saw it—the Dominion commander. Clad in ornate black armor, the figure stood at the edge of the battlefield, watching with cold detachment.
“Hold your ground!” Kieran called, his voice carrying over the clash of steel.
But even as he shouted, he knew they were losing. Elira’s magic was faltering, Viktor was tiring, and Lila was running low on arrows. If they kept fighting, they would be overwhelmed.
And then the commander stepped forward.
With a wave of their hand, the soldiers halted, their weapons poised but unmoving. The sudden stillness was deafening.
“You’ve fought well,” the commander said, their voice calm and measured. “But this is over.”
Kieran stepped forward, his sword raised. “Who are you?”
The commander removed their helmet, revealing a sharp-featured face framed by jet-black hair. Their eyes were cold, calculating.
“I am Commander Kael,” they said. “And you are Kieran Valen, the cursed heir.”
Kieran’s grip tightened on his sword. “If you know who I am, then you know I won’t surrender.”
Kael smiled faintly. “Bravery is admirable, but foolishness is fatal. You’re outnumbered, outmatched. And I have no interest in killing your companions—only you.”
The words sent a chill down Kieran’s spine. He glanced back at his friends, their faces marked by determination and fear.
“You’re lying,” Lila said, her voice steady despite the tension. “You’ll kill all of us.”
Kael tilted their head. “Perhaps. But I’d rather not waste the effort. Surrender, and your friends walk free.”
Viktor stepped forward, his dagger ready. “You think we’ll just let you take him?”
Kael’s smile faded. “You don’t have a choice.”
The soldiers moved closer, their weapons gleaming in the pale light. Kieran knew they couldn’t fight their way out. If he resisted, his friends would die.
He lowered his sword.
“Kieran, don’t!” Elira shouted, stepping toward him.
He turned to her, his eyes filled with regret. “I have to.”
“No, you don’t!” she insisted, her voice trembling. “We’ll find another way—”
“There is no other way,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “If I surrender, they’ll let you go. You can find me later. But if we fight now, we all die.”
Viktor grabbed his arm. “This isn’t the answer, Kieran.”
“It’s the only answer,” Kieran said, his voice breaking.
He turned to Kael, his expression resolute. “I’ll go with you. Let them go, and I won’t resist.”
Kael studied him for a moment before nodding. “Agreed.”
“No!” Elira shouted, but the soldiers moved between her and Kieran, blocking her path.
Kieran handed his sword to Kael, his heart heavy. As the soldiers began to escort him away, he turned to his friends one last time.
“Stay together,” he said, his voice firm despite the anguish in his eyes. “I’ll see you again.”
And then he was gone.
The clearing fell silent, the weight of his sacrifice pressing down on them. Elira sank to her knees, tears streaming down her face.
“We can’t leave him,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Viktor placed a hand on her shoulder, his own face pale with grief. “We won’t. We’ll get him back.”
Lila’s jaw tightened, her eyes blazing with determination. “We’re not letting the Dominion win.”
Elira looked up, her silver-blue eyes burning with resolve. “Then we fight. No matter what it takes, we’ll bring him back.”
The group stood together, their bond unbroken despite the pain. Kieran had made his choice, but they would not let it be the end.
Their journey wasn’t over. It had only just begun.
