Chapter 47 - Weight of choice

Ai stood in the darkened room, his mind a swirl of confusion and determination. The Keeper’s words echoed in his mind, reverberating with a weight he couldn’t ignore. He had always thought his fight was for survival, for a world that was broken beyond repair. But now, it seemed there was something much larger at play. A choice, one that could either save or destroy everything.
He glanced at the terminal, where the last remnants of the system flickered on, seemingly harmless. But Ai knew better now. Everything was connected. The machines, the cyborgs, the people—all part of a grand design he was only beginning to understand. And that design had a master. A creator who had orchestrated the entire cycle of destruction and rebirth.
“I can’t just stand here,” Ai muttered to himself, his voice barely above a whisper. “There has to be a way to stop this. To end the cycle.”
He turned and walked toward the door, the heavy silence pressing down on him like a suffocating weight. The Keeper’s words, though cryptic, were clear: he had to make a choice, and soon. A choice that could bring either salvation or ruin.
But Ai didn’t know if he was ready for that kind of responsibility. How could he decide the fate of everything? Was it even possible to break a cycle that had lasted for centuries? And what if, in his attempt to save the world, he destroyed it instead?
As he walked down the empty hallways, the sound of his footsteps seemed amplified in the eerie quiet. The world outside had fallen silent as well. The chaos of the cyborg rebellion had subsided, but the aftermath of their destruction lingered. The city was in ruins, and with each passing moment, Ai felt the weight of his existence pressing harder on his shoulders.
He had always believed he was a tool. Created for a single purpose—to survive, to fight, to endure. But now, he wondered if there was more to his life. Could he find a way to be more than just a weapon? Could he create his own path, independent of the forces that had shaped him?
His thoughts were interrupted by a soft click, followed by the hum of a nearby terminal activating. Ai turned sharply, his instincts kicking in. Was someone else here? Had the Keeper returned?
But as the screen flickered to life, Ai’s eyes widened in shock. The figure staring back at him wasn’t the Keeper, or any of the cyborgs he had faced. It was someone he had never seen before—an older man with tired eyes and a somber expression. The image on the screen flickered, glitching as if the system was struggling to maintain its connection.
“Is this… a message?” Ai muttered under his breath. “Who are you?”
The man on the screen took a deep breath, his voice crackling as if it was coming from far away.
“Ai… If you are seeing this, then the plan has already begun. I am Professor Norlax. The one who created you, the one who set the wheels of this cycle in motion.”
Ai’s breath caught in his throat. Professor Norlax. The name sent a shiver through him. This was the man responsible for the cyborgs, the machines, the war that had ravaged the world. And now, he was speaking to Ai directly.
“I don’t have much time,” the professor continued, his voice urgent. “The system is unstable. The 30th cyborg is on the verge of breaking free from the confines I created for it. If you want to stop it, you must act quickly. The choice, Ai, is yours.”
Ai’s heart raced. The professor was speaking as if he already knew what was coming. Did he understand the implications of the choice Ai had to make? Or was this all part of the same twisted game?
“You were designed to be the solution, Ai,” Norlax’s voice continued, now tinged with regret. “But nothing can prepare you for what’s coming. The cycle can’t be broken without sacrifice. If you want to save the world, you’ll have to destroy everything. But if you fail, the world will fall into chaos. The 30th cyborg will have his way, and there will be no one left to stop him.”
Ai clenched his fists, the weight of the decision pressing down on him. “Destroy everything? Is that really the only way?”
Professor Norlax’s image flickered again, the connection growing weaker by the second. “I wish I could give you a better answer, but there is no other choice. The system was designed to reset itself. But you, Ai, are the key to ending it. The question is… are you willing to sacrifice yourself, and everything you know, to stop it?”
The screen went black, and Ai stood frozen, his mind a storm of thoughts. Professor Norlax’s message had been a confession, a desperate plea for Ai to take control. But the decision was his now. The world’s fate rested in his hands.
Ai let out a slow breath, his fingers twitching at his sides. He had always fought to survive. To stay alive, to preserve whatever was left of humanity. But now, the question was different. The question was no longer about survival. It was about what came next. Could he break free from the cycle? Could he choose to end the war, end the destruction?
His gaze drifted toward the control panel, the same one that had once activated the machines and set the world on its destructive path. Could he really erase everything? Destroy the system that had created him?
Ai’s mind was made up. The world, as broken as it was, didn’t deserve to continue in this endless loop. He had to break it. Even if it meant giving up everything.
With a determined step, Ai moved toward the console, his fingers brushing over the controls. He could feel the pulse of the system beneath his fingertips, like the beating heart of the machine. It was now or never.
He took a deep breath, then pressed the button that would change everything.
