Chapter 6: Shopping.

Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny, the perfect day for our pre-vacation shopping spree. Emily and I set out early, armed with lists and determination, eager to tackle the task of gathering everything we needed for our African adventure. Our first stop was the supermarket, where we needed to pick up some essentials - snacks, water purification tablets, and a portable first-aid kit.
As we wandered through the aisles, methodically checking off items on our list, I suddenly heard a familiar voice.
"Hi there! Fancy seeing you here!" Sophia exclaimed, her bright smile illuminating the checkout counter.
I turned to find Sophia, the kind stranger who had driven me home from the bar, beaming at us from behind the register. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, and her eyes sparkled with warmth.
"Hey Sophia! What a coincidence!" I replied, feeling a warmth spread through my chest.
Emily's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Daddy, who's this? Isn't this Sophia?" she asked.
"Yes baby....Sophia helped Daddy out the other night," I explained, trying to downplay the story.
Sophia chuckled. "I kept your dad from getting lost, kiddo," she teased.
Emily giggled, and the two quickly hit it off. Sophia's easygoing nature put Emily at ease.
As we chatted, Sophia expertly scanned our groceries, asking about our vacation plans.
"Africa, huh? That's amazing!" she said. "What made you choose that destination?"
Emily launched into an enthusiastic explanation, sharing our excitement about exploring the savannas, seeing wildlife, and meeting new people. Sophia listened attentively.
When Emily finished, Sophia smiled. "You two are going to have an incredible time. I'm jealous!"
We laughed, and I asked Sophia about her job at the supermarket.
"I love it," she said. "I get to meet new people every day. Plus, it's flexible, so I can pursue my passion for photography."
As we finished shopping, Sophia handed me a bag filled with extra snacks.
"For the road," she whispered, winking.
Emily and I exchanged grateful smiles.
"Thanks, Sophia," I said. "You're a lifesaver."
Sophia's eyes sparkled. "Anytime, guys. Stay safe on your adventure! Don't forget to take lots of pictures."
With our shopping complete, we bid Sophia farewell and continued our preparations.
As we walked out of the supermarket, Emily turned to me.
"Daddy, Sophia is really nice," she said.
I nodded, feeling a sense of agreement. "Yes, kiddo. She certainly is."
Emily's gaze turned thoughtful. "I think she likes you, Daddy."
My heart skipped a beat. Was Emily right? Did Sophia have feelings for me?
I patted my pockets, realizing with a sinking feeling that my car key was missing. "Emily, wait," I said, turning back toward the supermarket. "I think I left my car key inside."
Emily nodded, concern etched on her face. "Do you want me to come with you?"
I shook my head. "No, kiddo. I'll be right back. Just wait here."
I rushed back into the store, scanning the aisles and checkout counters, hoping to spot my key. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed brighter than before, and the hum of conversation and rustling shopping bags filled the air.
As I approached the checkout where Sophia was working, I noticed a commotion. A middle-aged man, dressed in a crumpled business suit, was standing at her register, his face red with anger, his voice raised in accusation.
"...and now you're telling me you can't honor this coupon?" he demanded, his tone dripping with disdain. "This is ridiculous! You're just trying to make more money off me."
Sophia's expression remained calm and professional, but I could see the tension in her shoulders, the faint crease between her eyebrows. "I apologize, sir. Our system won't accept expired coupons. It's store policy."
The man's scowl deepened, his eyes bulging. "Policy? Your policy is to rip off customers! You're just trying to make more money off me."
I watched, feeling a surge of indignation. Sophia didn't deserve this treatment. She was just doing her job.
Without hesitation, I walked over to the checkout, my presence commanding attention. The man turned to me, his anger still simmering.
"Excuse me," I said, my voice firm but polite. "Is everything okay here?"
The man turned to me, his anger transferring to me. "No, everything's not okay. This...this..." he gestured toward Sophia "...incompetent cashier won't honor my coupon."
Sophia's eyes met mine, a flicker of gratitude in their depths.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding," I said. "The coupon's expired. That's not Sophia's fault."
The man's face turned redder, his veins bulging. "Mind your own business!" he snapped.
But I stood firm, my voice calm. "Sir, I'm just trying to help. Maybe we can find another solution?"
Sophia smiled slightly, and I could see her tension ease.
The man huffed but eventually stormed off, leaving Sophia looking shaken.
"Thanks for stepping in," Sophia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I appreciate it."
"No problem," I replied. "You didn't deserve that."
Sophia smiled, her eyes sparkling. "You're a hero."
I chuckled. "Just a concerned citizen."
As we chatted, I spotted my car key on the counter, near Sophia's register.
"Ah, there's my key," I said, relieved.
Sophia laughed. "Glad that's resolved. Now, get out of here and finish preparing for your adventure!"
With a smile, I pocketed my key and headed back to Emily.
As I returned to Emily, she gazed at me with a mischievous grin spreading across her face, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Daddy, what took you so long?" she teased, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm.
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Just had to resolve a dispute," I replied, trying to downplay the encounter with the angry customer.
Emily's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "A dispute, huh?" she said, her voice laced with intrigue. "Or did you just want to see Sophia again?"
I feigned innocence, trying to maintain a poker face. "Whatever are you talking about, kiddo?" I asked, attempting to deflect her question.
Emily giggled, throwing playful jabs at my arm. "Come on, Daddy! You left your car key on purpose, didn't you?" she accused, her tone light and playful.
I laughed, holding up my hands in defense. "Guilty as charged," I joked, pretending to admit to Emily's teasing.
Emily's grin widened, her face alight with excitement. "I knew it! You've got a crush on Sophia!" she exclaimed.
My face warmed, and I tried to maintain a nonchalant demeanor. "Don't be ridiculous, kiddo," I said, attempting to brush off her suggestion.
But Emily wouldn't let up. "Oh, Daddy, you're blushing!" she exclaimed.
I playfully rolled my eyes. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" I asked.
Emily nodded vigorously. "Yeah! It's been ages since Mom passed away. I want you to be happy, Daddy," she said.
My heart swelled with love for my daughter. She was growing up, and her concern touched me.
"Let's focus on our trip, okay?" I suggested.
Emily pouted good-naturedly. "Fine, but I'm watching you, Daddy," she warned.
As we walked to the car, Emily continued throwing playful jabs and jokes.
"You're going to have to ask Sophia out, Daddy," she teased.
I chuckled. "We'll see, kiddo."
Emily grinned mischievously. "I'll make sure to invite Sophia to dinner when we get back."
I raised an eyebrow. "You're a sly one, aren't you?"
Emily nodded. "I want you to be happy, Daddy."
I smiled, feeling grateful for my daughter's love and support.
