Chapter 14: The Mischievous Squirrel Clan
Chapter 14: The Mischievous Squirrel Clan
The forest’s canopy was dense, casting shadows across the trails as Nancy and Rodney made their way deeper into the woodland. They had heard whispers of the squirrel clan’s territory and their highly prized relic—a cloak of invisibility. But even more famous than the relic was the squirrels’ penchant for mischief. Nancy glanced over at Rodney, who had a determined look on his face.
“We need that cloak, Nancy,” Rodney said, his gaze fixed ahead. “The elder wolf said it would be essential for our mission. But…” He trailed off, looking around at the rustling trees with a slight frown. “Are you sure they’re not… watching us already?”
Nancy smirked, her sharp senses picking up faint sounds above. “Oh, they’re watching us, alright. I wouldn’t be surprised if they already planned out a few pranks.”
Rodney gulped, eyeing the treetops.
“Let’s try to stay on guard.”
As they trekked further into the squirrels’ territory, a flurry of tiny footsteps surrounded them. Nancy’s ears perked up as she tried to identify the location, but it was as if the forest itself were alive, giggling at their expense. Suddenly, a walnut plummeted from the canopy, hitting Rodney on the head with a loud thunk.
“Ouch!” Rodney cried out, rubbing his head.
“What was that?”
Nancy chuckled, trying to hold back her laughter.
“The squirrels, I’d assume. Welcome to their territory.”
Just as Rodney opened his mouth to respond, a dozen more walnuts rained down on him, landing on his shoulders and feet. Nancy watched as he stumbled backward, lifting his arms in defense.
“Alright, alright, you got us!” he shouted, his eyes squinting as he scanned the trees.
“Enough with the walnut bombardment!”
Tiny laughter echoed from the branches above, and then, with a rustle, a small, brown squirrel with a wiry tail scampered down a branch, gazing at them with gleaming, playful eyes.
“Well, well, well! Look who’s wandered into our woods!” he chittered, flicking his tail with delight.
“A wolf and a human… quite the odd pairing!”
Nancy straightened herself, giving a respectful nod. “I’m Nancy of the Blood Moon Clan. This is Rodney, my… companion. We come seeking your alliance.”
“Oh, an alliance!” The squirrel’s eyes widened, and he raised his tiny paws in mock surprise. “Fancy that! But why should the mighty squirrel clan help you?”
Rodney opened his mouth to reply, but before he could speak, another squirrel dropped from a nearby branch, landing on his shoulder with the grace of a practiced acrobat. Rodney froze, unsure of what to do as the squirrel began inspecting him with a curious gaze.
“Interesting choice in clothing, human,” the squirrel remarked with a snicker, tugging at Rodney’s collar. “Is this supposed to scare the lycans away?”
Nancy bit back a laugh as Rodney shifted uncomfortably, trying to brush the squirrel off without much success. “I, uh… Well, I didn’t come here to get style advice from a squirrel,” he muttered under his breath.
“Oh, he’s a feisty one!” chirped the first squirrel, who had now scurried down to the forest floor. “Tell me, what makes you think the squirrel clan would just hand over one of our most precious relics?”
Nancy took a deep breath. “We’re fighting to protect the forest, and that includes your territory. And I’ve heard tales of your clan’s courage and wit. A cloak of invisibility would give us an edge in our battle against the lycans.”
The squirrel tilted his head, considering her words. Then he grinned mischievously. “I see… Perhaps there is a way for you to earn our trust, though it won’t be easy.”
Rodney raised an eyebrow. “I’m guessing you’re not going to make it simple?”
The squirrels exchanged glances, and several more emerged from the trees, their tiny faces alight with mischief. One squirrel stepped forward, holding a small acorn as if it were a prized possession.
“Oh, we never make things simple,” the first squirrel replied with a laugh. “But we do love a good challenge! Here’s what we’ll do. We’ll let you borrow our precious cloak of invisibility—but only if you can retrieve it from the labyrinth of the hollow tree.”
Nancy and Rodney exchanged wary glances. “Labyrinth of the hollow tree?” Nancy asked, already suspecting it wouldn’t be a straightforward task.
The squirrel nodded, gesturing to a massive tree with twisted roots and an entrance shrouded in shadows. “Inside, you’ll face our cleverest traps, riddles, and… surprises. If you can reach the cloak and return it to us, then you’ve proven yourselves worthy.”
Rodney let out a sigh, though his eyes held a glint of determination. “Alright, we’ll do it. Lead the way.”
The squirrels chattered with excitement as they scurried over to the entrance of the tree. Rodney and Nancy exchanged glances before stepping inside the hollow. As they moved deeper into the tree, the squirrels’ laughter faded, replaced by an eerie silence.
The inside of the hollow was unlike anything they’d seen. The walls twisted around in strange patterns, and the tunnels branched off in every direction, creating a maze. Rodney held out his hand to stop Nancy. “We need a plan here. We don’t know what kind of traps they have in store.”
Nancy nodded. “Stay close. We don’t want to get separated.”
They moved cautiously, their senses heightened. Suddenly, a puff of glittering dust filled the air, and Rodney’s vision blurred. “Nancy, I can’t see!” he said, blinking furiously.
Nancy sniffed the air. “It’s some kind of magic dust… probably harmless, but disorienting. Just follow my lead.”
Holding onto her tail, Rodney stumbled behind Nancy as they navigated through the maze. The glittering dust cleared, revealing a room filled with hanging acorns, each glowing with an otherworldly light. Rodney reached out to touch one, but Nancy quickly pulled his hand back.
“Wait. Look closer,” she whispered.
Upon closer inspection, they noticed that some acorns had faint squirrel faces etched on them, smirking mischievously. Rodney narrowed his eyes. “Squirrel decoys?”
Nancy nodded. “They’re enchanted. I bet only one of these is real, and touching the wrong one might trigger a trap.”
Rodney scanned the room carefully, spotting one acorn hanging lower than the rest. It seemed slightly faded compared to the others, as if it had been there the longest. He pointed it out. “That one… it looks different.”
Nancy cautiously reached for it, grabbing it in her paw. Nothing happened. She let out a sigh of relief. “Good eye, Rodney.”
They pressed forward, eventually reaching a chamber where a faint glow emanated from the center. There, draped over a small pedestal, was the cloak of invisibility. Its dark fabric shimmered with an almost liquid quality, as if woven from shadows themselves.
Rodney grinned. “Looks like we’ve made it.”
But just as Nancy stepped forward to grab the cloak, a trapdoor opened beneath them. They tumbled down, landing in a soft bed of leaves and moss. Before they could get up, the squirrels’ chittering laughter filled the air.
“Well done, well done!” The squirrel leader perched on a branch above them, clapping his tiny paws. “You passed our tests—mostly!”
Rodney scowled. “Was that last trap really necessary?”
“Oh, of course! Just a little parting gift,” the squirrel said with a grin, tossing the cloak down to them. “As promised, you may borrow our cloak. But remember, if you don’t return it, we have ways of finding you.”
Nancy inclined her head respectfully. “Thank you for trusting us. This cloak will help us greatly.”
The squirrel nodded. “You’ve earned our trust, wolf girl. And you, human boy, you’ve earned our amusement!” He gave Rodney a teasing wink.
Nancy wrapped the cloak carefully, securing it in her bag. “Now that we’re allies, if you ever need our help, don’t hesitate to ask.”
The squirrel leader gave her a sly smile. “Oh, don’t worry, Nancy. We’ll find ways to keep you in our debt.”
As Nancy and Rodney made their way back through the forest, Rodney shook his head with a smile. “I never thought I’d say this, but… I think I might actually miss those tricksters.”
Nancy chuckled, giving him a playful nudge. “Let’s just hope they don’t play any more pranks when we’re least expecting it.”
Rodney laughed, glancing up at the treetops where the squirrels’ eyes gleamed in the dim light, following them until they left their territory. For now, they had secured another powerful ally and, more importantly, the cloak that would aid them in their fight against Andorio and his forces. And though they had narrowly escaped the squirrels’ tricks, Rodney couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of their unpredictable alliance with the mischievous squirrel clan.Download Novelah App
