Chapter 11: The New Building.

I pulled up to the estate, Ryan sitting beside me in the passenger seat. We exchanged a brief glance, and I could sense his nervous energy radiating from his tense posture. I knew he was worried about pulling off this charade, but I had faith in him.
"Remember, stay in character," I whispered, adjusting my tie to ensure I looked every bit the part of Agent John. "You're my client, and I'm here to finalize the lease. Just follow my lead and we'll be fine." Ryan nodded, taking a deep breath to calm his nerves.
We stepped out of the car and walked towards the office, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the estate. The beautifully manicured lawns and tasteful architecture made the place look inviting, but I knew better. Beneath the surface, this estate was rotten.
Inside, the receptionist greeted us with a friendly smile. "Good morning, gentlemen. Welcome to Oakwood Estates. How can I assist you?" Her bright blue eyes sparkled with warmth.
"I'm Agent John, and this is my client, Mr. Ryan," I said, flashing a fake ID to solidify our cover. "We have an appointment with Mr. Johnson." The receptionist nodded efficiently.
"Right this way, please." She led us to Mr. Johnson's office, her heels clicking on the polished floor.
Mr. Johnson stood up from behind his desk, a middle-aged man with a receding hairline and a forced smile. "Ah, Agent John, Mr. Ryan. Delighted to meet you." His voice dripped with professionalism.
"The pleasure's mine, Mr. Johnson," I replied, extending my hand for a firm handshake. Ryan followed suit.
Mr. Johnson smiled. "Please, have a seat. I'll get the paperwork started." He gestured to the plush chairs in front of his desk.
We spent the next 30 minutes reviewing the lease agreement, Ryan asking pertinent questions to solidify our cover. "I'd like to confirm the security measures in place," Ryan said.
"Absolutely," Mr. Johnson replied. "We have 24/7 surveillance and on-site security personnel. Your safety is our top priority." His words sounded rehearsed.
I nodded. "That's reassuring. What about maintenance and repairs?"
"We have a dedicated team on call," Mr. Johnson said. "Any issues, and they'll be there promptly." His smile never wavered.
With the paperwork finalized, Mr. Johnson handed us the keys. "Unit 3B is yours, gentlemen," he said. "I'll show you the way."
As we walked to the unit, Ryan whispered, "So far, so good. He seems oblivious."
I nodded subtly. "Let's keep it that way."
Mr. Johnson unlocked the door, revealing a spacious apartment with modern furnishings. "This is impressive," Ryan said.
"Thank you," Mr. Johnson replied. "We take pride in our properties. You'll find everything you need here." His eyes scanned the room.
I inspected the unit, taking note of the layout and potential surveillance points. "Is there anything else we should know?" I asked.
"That's all for now," Mr. Johnson said. "You have my contact information. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything." His smile seemed genuine.
We exchanged pleasantries, shaking hands once more.
"Thank you, Mr. Johnson," Ryan said.
"My pleasure," Mr. Johnson replied.
As Mr. Johnson left, Ryan let out a sigh. "That went smoothly. Now what?"
"Now the real work begins," I replied. "We gather evidence, monitor Mr. Johnson's movements, and see where it leads us." Our eyes locked.
Ryan nodded resolutely. "Let's do this."
I pulled out my phone and dialed Alex's number, my fingers moving swiftly over the keypad as Ryan watched me with interest. The sound of ringing filled my ear before Alex's voice came on the line, warm and familiar. "Hey, Alex," I said, my voice low and urgent, conveying the gravity of our situation. "We're in. Mr. Johnson bought our cover completely. He didn't suspect a thing." I paused, glancing around the room to ensure we were truly alone, the silence a testament to our secure location.
"Excellent," Alex replied, his voice laced with excitement and anticipation, the thrill of the mission palpable even over the phone. "I've been waiting for this moment. What's the plan now that you're inside?" His words were filled with a sense of determination, a reminder of our shared goal. I could almost hear his mind racing with possibilities.
"Come as a delivery guy," I instructed, thinking through every detail, each step meticulously planned. "Bring some packages, and make sure they're clearly labeled as fragile. We need to get you inside without arousing suspicion, so the delivery cover should work perfectly." I glanced at Ryan, who nodded in agreement, his eyes locked on mine.
"Got it," Alex said. "What's the address?" His tone turned professional, all business. I could sense his focus shifting to logistics.
"Unit 3B, Oakwood Estates," I replied. "We'll leave the door open for you. Just knock and Ryan will let you in." I looked at Ryan, who stood by the door, his posture relaxed yet alert.
"See you soon," Alex said before hanging up.
I turned to Ryan. "Alex is on his way," I said. "Let's get ready. We need to make this look natural." Ryan nodded.
We spent the next twenty minutes reviewing our plan, going over every detail, every possible scenario. We knew the risks, the potential pitfalls, and the consequences of failure. But we were a well-oiled machine.
Twenty minutes later, we heard a knock on the door. Ryan opened it.
"Delivery," Alex called out.
Ryan smiled. "Hey, that's quick service."
Alex chuckled. "We aim to please." He handed Ryan the packages.
"Careful, they're fragile," Alex warned.
Ryan nodded.
As Alex entered, he scanned the room. His eyes lingered on the monitors.
"Perfect," Alex whispered. "We've got a great view of the office. This will work beautifully." His eyes sparkled.
"Get to work," I said.
Alex quickly set up his equipment, his hands moving with precision.
"Alright, we're live," Alex said.
Ryan watched.
"Now we wait," I said.
The three of us sat in silence.
Our eyes fixed on the monitors.
We were one step closer.
To uncovering the truth.
As we settled in for the long haul.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction.
We were making progress.
And nothing would stop us now.
