CHAPTER 41 My brain could not comprehend what Mila said about the Alpha. He’s after the three of us. It sounded like a cat and mouse situation. In short, he’s going to kill us. Of course, he could easily do that with one snap. He is the strongest man in this town. Comparing me, I am just a half-blood wolf whom everyone can defeat I am nothing to him. It’s either I fight or I die. And I chose to fight and die rather than lose my life for nothing. These past few days whenever I attend my classes, the chairs and the students inside our classroom were decreasing. They were being transferred to the same class or same teacher but in a different section. And whenever I look at other classrooms, there was a surge of students. There are even students who are standing up just to catch up. Why are they avoiding me? Am I someone they should be scared of? It came to a point where there were only eleven of us in the class. The two of them were Gwen and Aki, and the others were the nerds who doesn’t care about the news. The classroom was annoyingly quiet. It was unreal after all. Even if I admit it or not, I am a threat to everybody. I am a killer. In this world, it’s funny how a mistake is similar to black ink poured into a white fine solution. I am always labeled as a good kid who follows directions, studies most of the time, and read during my free time. But when I unconsciously killed not-so-innocent werewolves by defending our lives, I became a killer through their eyes. The worst part of it all, no one can revert it. It will remain for how long they could remember it. For a lifetime. There are times when I ask my friends what’s wrong with those students who were transferring classrooms. I don’t want them to tell me an expected response, but Gwen would answer, “They are scared of you and thought you as a killer. If they’re next or close to you, they thought they’re going to die.” “Why do you and Aki stay by my side? You could’ve left me and saved yourselves from a monster like me.” Aki slapped my shoulders. “Don’t overthink about it. Don’t look at yourself that way. You’re not a monster. You’re our friend. Besides, this town had been used to killings and injustice.” Gwen placed her arms behind my neck. “The three of us are friends together. This is what friends are for. We can aid one another when someone needs us. The three of us are always and forever.” I smiled and let my joy let out from my chest. I am not alone in this journey. My brothers had always been there, Nana was there, Gelo and Mila were my partners, and these people in my school are friends I should cherish because they did not let me down. During weekends, Gelo would call my name from the outside of our house. We walked together to the lake and place a blanket near it. We will both read books for hours, sometimes giving comments while reading. I had dreamt of this before. A book date with someone I treasure the most. “You made me a reader. Though I still like watching movies and series, this hobby of reading is pulling me to it. There’s something with written words that I adore.” I smiled at him. “That’s great! I’ve always dreamt of having a friend who reads books. For me, those types of boys were the prettiest.” No one compares to Angelo right now. In my eyes, he’s the most attractive and cunning guy. He’s more of a best friend to me. “Since you’ve read a lot of books, what genre is your favorite?” I asked when I was ten pages in from the classic book I was reading. I ordered it online and the only reason I ordered it was because it has pictures and letters of the characters. Best things to have in books. And it makes me feel like the main character while reading it. “My favorite…” He trailed and pointed to his chin. “I love fantasy and science fiction. They’re just amazing. But thrillers and romance are also great. In my opinion, you should buy more fantasy and sci-fi books.” “I’ll try to order them online. I have a lot of piles to read. For now, you can only borrow what I have on my shelves at the moment.” “You call that a shelf? I call them a library.” I smirked at him. “I call them a haven. A safe place.” Books had always been my escape from the judging world. But now, it is more evident to read books to remove such nasty thoughts in my head. Reading books would clean my mind from the thoughts I am thinking of. By reading, I am an adventurer rather than a killer. And that is how the magic happens in books. It moves. It transports. I arrived first at the cafeteria. As I sat at a table for two, students around me vanished. Gwen told me to see her here since Aki won’t be attending today’s class. The muscles around my thighs still hurt. An undescribed pain I was suffering too. Thirty minutes passed and no signs of Gwen. I checked my phone if there are any signs here, but there were no text messages or missed calls. Thirty minutes late is already too much for someone as impatient as me. I got here on time and she wasn’t even showing up. I can’t hold my pee so I stood up and left the cafeteria for a while. I texted Gwen that I’ll be heading to the nearest comfort room so she should wait for me. As soon as I got out of the cubicle and comfort room, I choked myself to death seeing Marvel and Glitter at the door crossing their arms. I thought they weren’t looking or waiting for me so I walked past them, not minding those deadly stares. Marvel pulled my elbow, his nails scratching my skin, pulling me towards them. “What the fuck is your problem?” I asked, eyebrows crossed. I wanted to roll my eyes, but Gwen’s voice in my head reminded me not to mess with the beta children. Even though I could fight them, the law is against me. Everything that I do to them cannot be right. “Don’t act cowardly when you know you know you’re not a coward. Even though you killed four wolves in one hand, don’t think of yourself as a strong woman. You’re nothing compared to the alpha,” Marvel said. He growled at me, scaring that shit hell out of me. “Why are you messing with me? I am just a nobody.” Glitter shot me fury stares. “First, we’re not messing with you. Second, you’re a nobody. If you’re a nobody, you’re probably dead by now. You have incredible strength. We are here to warn you as concerned citizens of this town who do not want the blood to be shed a few months before graduation. Your life's in danger. You showed exemplary strength and that’s a threat to those who have higher ranks than you. Whether you are listening to us or not, ready yourself. The alpha will kill you. The whole clan is after you.” They left me after that. I heard Marvel telling Glitter that they shouldn’t have warned me. They should’ve let me unwarned. Things can never change. I am a werewolf now and my end game is either death or the afterlife.
