Chapter 19: Demon King
The journey back from the dungeon was filled with an eerie silence. Caden could feel the weight of the artifact in his hand, its dark energy thrumming beneath his skin like a pulse, but subdued for now. Lira and Finn walked ahead, their steps quick and anxious, casting occasional glances back at him.
Caden’s mind was clouded, thoughts swirling with uncertainty. The power he had felt inside the dungeon was terrifying—overwhelming. Yet, somehow, he had managed to contain it. But for how long?
As the trio reached the edge of the forest, Lira finally spoke up, her voice barely masking her worry.
“Caden, you haven’t said a word since we left. What’s going on? How do you feel?” She stopped, turning to face him, her brows furrowed with concern.
Caden clenched his fist around the artifact, the coldness of its dark surface pressing against his palm. “I don’t know. It’s… hard to explain. It’s like the power inside it is still there, but quieter. Like it’s waiting for something.”
“That doesn’t sound good,” Finn muttered from beside Lira, shifting uneasily. “Maybe we should get rid of it. I mean, whatever that thing is, it’s clearly dangerous.”
Lira nodded in agreement. “Finn’s right. We don’t know what we’re dealing with. We should take it to someone who understands ancient artifacts—maybe a scholar, or a mage.”
Caden shook his head. “No. I can handle it.”
“Caden, you don’t have to carry this burden alone,” Lira said softly. “We’re in this together.”
Caden appreciated her words, but there was something deep inside him—a whispering voice that told him he had to keep the artifact. That it was meant for him. Before he could respond, a sharp, cold pain shot through his chest. He gasped, doubling over, clutching his heart.
“Caden!” Lira shouted, rushing to his side.
Finn ran over, eyes wide with panic. “What’s happening?”
Caden couldn’t answer. His body felt like it was on fire, but not with the flames he was used to—this was something darker, more sinister. The artifact in his hand began to glow, its black mist swirling violently.
“No… no…,” Caden whispered, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The energy inside the artifact wasn’t quiet anymore. It was surging, filling him with a power he couldn’t control. His vision blurred, and a voice—deep, cold, and ancient—echoed in his mind.
**“Foolish mortal… You have awakened me.”**
The voice sent a chill down Caden’s spine. He tried to push it away, but the presence grew stronger, consuming him from within.
“Caden, drop the artifact!” Lira yelled, grabbing his arm, but it was too late.
A wave of dark energy exploded from the artifact, knocking Lira and Finn back several feet. Caden collapsed to the ground, his body convulsing as the voice in his head grew louder, stronger.
**“I am the Demon King, and you, mortal, shall be my vessel.”**
Caden’s heart pounded as his body fought against the invading presence. He could feel the Demon King’s soul wrapping around his own, attempting to merge with him, to take control. His flames flared up, trying to resist, but they were being snuffed out one by one by the overwhelming darkness.
“No… I won’t… let you…” Caden struggled to speak, his voice weak as he fought the demon’s influence.
The Demon King laughed, a low, rumbling sound that echoed in Caden’s skull. **“You are nothing compared to my power. Surrender, and I may spare what’s left of your mind.”**
Lira staggered to her feet, her eyes wide with fear as she watched Caden writhe on the ground. “Caden! Fight it! Don’t let it take over!”
Finn scrambled up beside her, his face pale. “What do we do? We can’t just watch him—he’s being possessed!”
Lira’s mind raced as she looked between Caden and the artifact still clutched in his hand. She knew they had to act fast, but the power coming from the artifact was far beyond anything they had ever encountered.
Caden’s body stiffened suddenly, and his eyes snapped open—pitch black, swirling with dark energy. His voice was low, distorted by the presence of the Demon King. “It’s too late… This body is mine.”
Lira’s heart clenched. “Caden, no!”
The demon-possessed Caden stood slowly, his movements eerily graceful. A dark aura pulsed around him, making the air thick and oppressive. His lips twisted into a sinister smile as he looked at Lira and Finn.
“This mortal’s body is strong,” the Demon King said, his voice no longer Caden’s. “But his will… weak.”
Lira gripped her dagger, her hands trembling. “Give him back! You don’t belong here!”
The Demon King tilted Caden’s head, mockingly amused. “And what will you do, little one? Your weapons are nothing against me.”
Finn pulled out his bow, his hands shaking as he nocked an arrow. “We’ll stop you. We’ll save Caden.”
The demon laughed, a deep, menacing sound that made the ground tremble. “You are brave, but foolish. This mortal is already mine.”
Lira’s eyes burned with determination. “We won’t give up on him.”
In an instant, the Demon King lunged forward with unnatural speed, grabbing Lira by the throat and lifting her off the ground effortlessly. “Your determination is admirable… but futile.”
Lira gasped, her hand clawing at the Demon King’s grip, but it was like trying to pry open an iron vise. The darkness swirling around him intensified, suffocating her.
But somewhere, deep inside the dark haze that surrounded him, Caden’s consciousness stirred. He could feel the Demon King’s grip tightening on Lira’s neck, and something inside him snapped.
**“No… She’s my friend… I won’t let you hurt her!”** Caden’s voice echoed in his mind, fighting against the demon’s control.
The flames inside Caden, nearly extinguished by the dark presence, flickered back to life. They were weak, but they burned with fierce determination.
**“This is my body!”** Caden roared, his voice growing stronger. **“Get out!”**
The Demon King hesitated, surprised by Caden’s sudden resurgence of will. The dark grip on Lira loosened for a moment, and she fell to the ground, gasping for air.
Lira looked up, her eyes wide with hope. “Caden…?”
Inside his mind, Caden fought with everything he had, pushing back against the demon’s soul. The darkness writhed, but Caden’s flames burned brighter, fueled by his desire to protect his friends.
**“You will not win, mortal!”** the Demon King snarled, his voice losing some of its confidence.
But Caden was no longer afraid. He had something to fight for, and that gave him strength. **“This is my body, my life. You won’t take it from me!”**
With one final surge of power, Caden unleashed his flames, engulfing the dark presence in a fiery blaze. The Demon King screamed in rage, but the flames consumed him, burning away the last remnants of his soul.
Caden collapsed to the ground, panting, the artifact now silent and cold in his hand.
Lira and Finn rushed to his side, their faces etched with concern.
“Caden…?” Lira whispered, kneeling beside him.
He opened his eyes—his own eyes, no longer clouded by darkness—and gave her a weak smile. “I’m… okay.”
Lira let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, her relief palpable. “You fought him… You won.”
Caden nodded slowly, his body trembling from exhaustion. “But the artifact… it’s dangerous. We need to destroy it.”
Finn, still pale but recovering, looked at the artifact warily. “I think that’s the best idea you’ve had all day.”
As they sat in the clearing, catching their breath, Caden knew that this was far from over. The Demon King’s soul may have been banished, but the artifact still held dark power. And whatever it was, others would come looking for it.
But for now, Caden had won the battle—and he wasn’t going to let anything take that victory away.Download Novelah App
