Chapter 3: Slacking Off in a Zombie Wonderland

The week unfolded in a haze of laughter, snacks, and an absurd sense of freedom that Kelly had never experienced before. Each day felt like a vacation from the humdrum of her work life, and as the sun rose over the chaos of the zombie apocalypse, she found herself thriving in the surreal environment.
“Welcome to Day Six of the Zombie Holiday!” Kelly announced cheerfully as she poured herself another glass of wine on the balcony, the sun shining brightly overhead. She had taken to starting each day with a toast to her newfound freedom. “Here’s to more zombies and fewer spreadsheets!”
Mark, lounging on a nearby chair with a book in hand, looked up and chuckled. “I can’t believe you’ve turned this into a daily ritual.”
“Why not?” Kelly replied, twirling her glass in delight. “This is the best week of my life! No work, no stress, just good food, good drinks, and—zombies!” She gestured dramatically to the street below, where a couple of zombies were trying to get into a parked car, their movements slow and clumsy.
Mark shook his head, still bemused. “I don’t know if it’s healthy to be this relaxed while the world is falling apart outside.”
“Healthy? Who cares about healthy?” Kelly retorted with a playful smirk. “This is my time to enjoy life without the daily grind. Look at them down there! They’re just living their zombie lives.”
“Yeah, but we should be planning for the future,” he said, flipping a page in his book. “What if this lasts longer than we think?”
“Longer than we think? What’s the worst that could happen?” Kelly laughed. “We just keep drinking, eating, and watching the chaos unfold! Honestly, this isn’t so bad.”
She leaned back in her chair, tilting her head toward the sky. “I could get used to this. Who knew being in the middle of a zombie apocalypse could be so liberating?”
Mark sighed but couldn’t hide his amusement. “You’re ridiculous. But I guess it’s nice to see you so carefree.”
As the days rolled on, Kelly fully embraced her new lifestyle. Mornings were spent sleeping in, afternoons filled with snacks, and evenings dedicated to wine and whatever ridiculous game she could think of.
“Let’s play ‘Zombie Bingo!’” Kelly suggested one afternoon as she rummaged through the drawers for paper. “Every time we see a zombie do something ridiculous, we mark it down. First to five wins!”
“Seriously?” Mark asked, raising an eyebrow. “This is what you want to do with your time?”
“Absolutely!” Kelly replied, excitement bubbling over. “This is the best game ever. Trust me, it’ll be fun!”
As they crafted their bingo cards, Kelly couldn’t help but laugh. “I can’t believe I’ve spent so much time working when I could have been doing this! Who knew zombies were so entertaining?”
Mark stared at his card, a mixture of amusement and disbelief on his face. “You really have lost it, haven’t you?”
“Lost it? No way! I’ve found myself!” she declared triumphantly, holding up her card for him to see. “I’m living my best life! Look at this place—how often do you get a front-row seat to a zombie apocalypse?”
“Only you would find a way to make this fun,” Mark muttered, shaking his head with a smile.
“Fun is my middle name!” Kelly declared, crossing her arms over her chest with pride. “And you’re lucky to be here with me. Now, let’s get started! First one to see a zombie trip over something gets a free drink!”
The week continued with absurdity and laughter, each day blending into the next. Kelly found herself in a blissful state of slacking off, often losing track of time as they watched the zombies stumble around the neighborhood.
“Mark, check it out!” she shouted one afternoon, pointing excitedly as a zombie tried to climb a fence but ended up getting stuck. “Bingo! That’s totally tripping!”
“Okay, that counts,” Mark said, laughing as he marked it on his card. “But you can’t keep winning just because they’re clumsy.”
“Clumsy zombies make for the best entertainment!” Kelly replied, her eyes sparkling with joy. “And you know what? This makes me think… Maybe I don’t want to go back to work at all.”
“Really?” Mark asked, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“Maybe I can find a way to make a living without being tied to that desk,” she said, her voice thoughtful. “I mean, look at us! We’re having the time of our lives! Why would I want to go back to the grind when I could find something fun?”
“You’re serious about this, aren’t you?” Mark said, watching her closely. “What do you want to do instead?”
“I don’t know,” Kelly admitted, leaning back in her chair. “But I want something that makes me feel alive! Something where I can laugh and enjoy life.”
“Maybe you should consider writing or vlogging about this,” he suggested. “You’ve always had a knack for storytelling. You could share your experiences with everyone else who’s stuck at home.”
“Vlogging?” Kelly echoed, her eyes widening. “That could be fun! I could document our zombie escapades and share tips on how to survive—while having fun, of course!”
“Exactly!” Mark encouraged. “You could inspire people to find joy even in tough times. It could be a new career path for you!”
Kelly’s mind began racing with ideas. “And I could include tutorials on how to make the best zombie-themed snacks! Or create a series called ‘How to Party in the Apocalypse!’” She laughed, the possibilities swirling in her mind.
“Now that sounds like a blast!” Mark replied, genuinely excited. “You could even get people to send in their own zombie survival tips and stories!”
Kelly’s enthusiasm for the idea grew. She started jotting down notes and brainstorming content while still slacking off, of course. “Who knew slacking could be so productive?” she quipped one afternoon as she typed out ideas on her laptop, the screen reflecting her beaming smile.
“Just don’t forget to enjoy the moment, too,” Mark reminded her, sipping on a drink. “This is still a zombie apocalypse, after all.”
“I know, I know!” Kelly said, waving her hand dismissively. “But this is part of the fun! Who would’ve thought we’d turn a disaster into a creative opportunity?”
Their days were filled with bizarre fun, including dancing on the balcony and inviting their neighbors to join in. One evening, Kelly set up a mini outdoor movie screening, using an old projector she found in her closet.
“Tonight’s feature: ‘Night of the Living Dead!’” she announced dramatically, setting up blankets and snacks. “Perfect for the occasion!”
“Only you would think of that,” Mark said, chuckling. “But I guess it’s fitting.”
As the movie played and the sun set, casting a warm glow over the balcony, Kelly couldn’t remember a time she had felt more alive. She glanced around at the makeshift gathering of friends, neighbors, and even a few zombies shambling around in the distance, and her heart swelled with happiness.
“Cheers to the zombie apocalypse!” she shouted, raising her glass. “May it last forever!”
“Forever? That’s a bit much,” Mark said, smirking at her. “But here’s to the good times!”
They clinked glasses, and the laughter echoed around them. As the film flickered on the screen, Kelly felt a sense of contentment wash over her. Maybe this was the reset she needed—an opportunity to find joy in the chaos and to discover who she really was outside of the confines of her job.
The week continued to roll on, and every day brought new adventures and ridiculous ideas. Kelly embraced her role as the ‘Zombie Queen,’ declaring herself the ruler of her newfound kingdom.
“Long live the Zombie Queen!” she shouted one afternoon, a plastic crown perched atop her head. “Let the festivities begin!”
Mark couldn’t help but laugh as she flitted around the balcony, entertaining their little group with tales of her imagined adventures. “I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in the world who can say I’ve spent a week partying during a zombie apocalypse,” she declared, beaming.
“Only you could turn this into a celebration,” Mark said, shaking his head. “But it’s been fun, I’ll give you that.”
“Fun is the name of the game!” Kelly replied, raising her glass high. “Here’s to a life of adventure, whether it’s filled with zombies or not!”
As the days passed, the initial panic of the apocalypse faded into a strange sense of normalcy. Kelly no longer felt the weight of her old life pressing down on her; instead, she felt light, free to explore who she truly was.
“Maybe I don’t need to rush back to work,” she mused one evening, sitting on the balcony with Mark as they watched the zombies wander by. “Maybe I can create a new path for myself.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Mark said, nodding. “Just remember, while it’s fun to embrace the chaos, we still need to keep an eye on things. We don’t know how long this will last.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kelly replied, waving her hand dismissively. “But until then, let’s enjoy the ride! We can be the happiest survivors in a zombie apocalypse!”
Mark chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. “Only you could turn this into a life lesson.”
“Every moment is a lesson!” she declared. “And
this one is all about living life to the fullest! Now, who’s ready for more snacks?”
As the sun set, casting a warm glow over their chaotic oasis, Kelly felt a sense of happiness that she had long forgotten. In this world filled with zombies, she had finally found herself—and she was ready to embrace whatever came next.
