Chapter 28 Repercussions of the Seal

The silence in the cavern was deafening after the blinding flash of light faded. Ji-ho, Hwan, and Elysia stood in the middle of the now dormant space, their breaths shallow, still feeling the tremors in their bodies from the overwhelming surge of energy. The sealing ritual had worked, but the toll it had taken on all of them was visible in the way they sagged, drained of their strength.
The cavern, once a place filled with energy, light, and the chaos of spirits, was now hollow, like a shell of its former self. The walls were cracked, and the very earth seemed to hum with the memory of what had just transpired. A strange stillness hung in the air, one that was both a relief and an eerie reminder of the danger they had just averted.
— That... was too close, — Hwan said, his voice strained as he sheathed his sword. He wiped the sweat from his brow, glancing at Ji-ho, who was still kneeling near the altar. His eyes softened with concern. — Are you alright?
Ji-ho nodded but didn’t rise. The altar was cold beneath her hands now, the once-glowing symbols darkened and lifeless. She could still feel the remnants of the power they had unleashed lingering in the air, like a faint pulse. Her body felt heavy, as though the energy she had used in the ritual had drained more than just her strength—it had touched her very soul.
— I’m fine, — she replied, her voice quieter than usual. — But this isn’t over. Sealing it is only a temporary solution.
Elysia, who had been pacing anxiously, turned sharply toward Ji-ho, her eyes wide. — What do you mean? We sealed the mountain’s wrath. That thing is gone, right?
Ji-ho’s gaze remained on the altar, her brows furrowed in thought. — Yes, we sealed it. But sealing doesn’t mean destroying. The mountain’s fury is still there, waiting. We just... contained it again. And if the balance isn’t restored, it could break free once more.
Hwan, crossing his arms, stepped closer. His face was set in a serious expression. — So, we’re back to square one. We saved the village from the mountain’s wrath, but for how long?
The weight of the truth pressed down on Ji-ho. She had known, deep down, that sealing the fury wasn’t a permanent solution. There was something more they were missing, something that tied the mountain’s anger to the imbalance of power in the land. And if they didn’t find out what that was soon, the cycle would repeat itself, each time more violently than the last.
— We need to figure out what caused this imbalance in the first place, — Ji-ho said, finally pushing herself to her feet. She swayed for a moment before steadying herself. — Something disturbed the natural order, and until we fix that, we’re only delaying the inevitable.
— Disturbed the natural order? — Elysia’s voice was incredulous. — We’ve been through hell just to keep that thing from destroying everything. And now you're saying it could happen again?
Ji-ho met Elysia’s gaze, her expression firm despite the exhaustion weighing her down. — Yes. And the next time, we might not be able to stop it.
Elysia’s frustration was palpable, but she didn’t argue further. Instead, she kicked a stray rock across the cavern, letting out a frustrated groan. — Fantastic. Just fantastic.
Hwan looked between the two women, his usual calm demeanor showing signs of strain. He understood the gravity of the situation as well as Ji-ho did, but the exhaustion was making it hard for them to think clearly. — We should rest, — he said finally. — We can’t figure out the next step like this. Let’s head back to the village and regroup.
Ji-ho nodded in agreement. Her muscles ached, and the mental strain of the battle and ritual had taken a toll. She could see it in Hwan and Elysia too—the weariness in their eyes, the heaviness in their steps. They needed to recover if they were going to face what came next.
As they made their way out of the cavern, Ji-ho couldn’t shake the feeling that something more was watching them, something beyond the mountain’s fury. The dark energy they had felt earlier hadn’t entirely dissipated with the sealing. It lingered, a cold presence that trailed behind them like a shadow. The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
The trek back to the village was quiet, the once vibrant forest now feeling muted and strange. The animals that usually stirred in the underbrush were nowhere to be seen, as if the entire forest had gone into hiding. The only sound was the crunch of leaves beneath their feet and the distant echo of their labored breathing.
When they finally emerged from the woods, the village lay before them, peaceful and quiet. The villagers, unaware of the danger they had been saved from, went about their evening routines, oblivious to the storm that had nearly torn them apart. Ji-ho watched them for a moment, a pang of guilt settling in her chest. They had no idea how close they had come to losing everything.
— We need to speak with the elders, — Hwan said as they approached the edge of the village. — They might know more about the history of the mountain. Maybe there's something in their stories or records that could help us understand why this happened.
Ji-ho nodded, though her mind was already racing ahead. There had to be something, some clue they had missed. The mountain’s wrath wasn’t just a force of nature. It was tied to something deeper, something that had been set in motion long before they had ever arrived.
Elysia, still simmering with frustration, sighed heavily. — Let’s hope they have answers. Because I’m starting to think we’re running out of time.
As they made their way toward the village elder’s house, Ji-ho couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that their victory had come with a price they had yet to fully understand. The mountain’s wrath was sealed for now, but the darkness they had felt was still out there, waiting.
And it wouldn’t wait forever.
