Chapter 15: Doubleganger

The tension in the air was palpable as Arthur and his companions approached the ominous, mist-shrouded gateway that marked the beginning of the next trial. The once bustling atmosphere of the Trial City had faded into the background, leaving them alone to confront whatever challenge awaited them next.
Arthur could feel his heartbeat quicken as they neared the entrance. He had faced countless trials already—tests of strength, stamina, teamwork, and courage—but something about this one felt different. The air was thick with a sense of impending doom, and a cold shiver ran down his spine.
Alice, walking beside him, glanced up at the towering gate. Her usually calm demeanor was tinged with unease. “This place… it feels wrong. Like something is watching us.”
Elfaria, who had been trying to lighten the mood with her usual cheerful banter, had gone quiet, her eyes narrowed as she scanned the surroundings. “Yeah, I don’t like this one bit. It’s too quiet. Too… sinister.”
Liam, clutching his staff tightly, looked at Arthur for reassurance. “Do you think we’re ready for this, Arthur? I mean, we’ve come so far, but…”
Arthur forced a confident smile, though inside he shared their apprehension. “We’ve faced everything these trials have thrown at us. We’ll get through this one too—together.”
As they stepped closer, the mist parted, revealing a figure standing in the shadows just beyond the gate. The figure was tall and cloaked in darkness, its features obscured by a hood. But there was something unnervingly familiar about the way it moved, the way it held itself.
Arthur felt a jolt of recognition, and his blood ran cold. “No… it can’t be.”
The figure stepped forward, the darkness around it receding just enough to reveal a face that Arthur knew all too well—his own. But it wasn’t exactly him. The doppelgänger’s eyes were cold and merciless, its expression twisted into a cruel smile.
Alice gasped, stepping back in shock. “Arthur, what… who is that?”
Elfaria’s hand went to the hilt of her sword, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. “That’s not just some random enemy, is it? It looks just like you, Arthur.”
Arthur’s doppelgänger chuckled darkly, the sound sending chills down their spines. “Well, well, well… the great Arthur Leywin. It’s about time we met face to face.”
Arthur took a step forward, his fists clenched. “Who are you? What kind of trick is this?”
The doppelgänger tilted its head, its smile widening. “I’m you, Arthur. Or rather, I’m everything you fear you might become. Every dark thought, every weakness you try to bury deep inside. I am your archnemesis, the embodiment of all your doubts and fears.”
Alice looked at Arthur, concern etched in her features. “Arthur… this is the trial. You have to face yourself.”
Arthur swallowed hard, his mind racing. This trial was unlike any they had faced before. It wasn’t about physical strength or endurance—it was a battle against his own inner demons.
Elfaria stepped up beside him, her voice steady but laced with concern. “We’re with you, Arthur. Whatever this thing is, we’ll take it down together.”
The doppelgänger’s cold gaze flicked to Elfaria, and it sneered. “How touching. But this isn’t a fight you can win with teamwork. This is about Arthur. He has to confront his own darkness… alone.”
Arthur’s heart pounded in his chest. He had fought countless enemies, but this was different. This was personal. And deep down, he knew his doppelgänger was right—this was a battle only he could fight.
Taking a deep breath, Arthur stepped forward, his eyes locked on his doppelgänger. “You’re right. This is between you and me.”
Alice reached out, as if to stop him, but then hesitated, her hand falling to her side. “Arthur… be careful.”
He nodded, grateful for her support, but he knew what had to be done. This was his trial, his battle to win. He couldn’t let his fears control him any longer.
The doppelgänger grinned, its eyes glinting with malice. “Finally, some courage. Let’s see if you’re as strong as you think you are.”
With a flick of its wrist, the doppelgänger summoned a shadowy blade, the weapon seeming to pulse with dark energy. Arthur summoned his own weapon, feeling the familiar weight of his sword in his hand.
The two Arthurs circled each other, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. The world around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in a dark, swirling void.
“You’ve always been afraid, Arthur,” the doppelgänger taunted, its voice dripping with venom. “Afraid of failure, of letting down the people who depend on you. You put on a brave face, but inside, you’re terrified.”
Arthur gritted his teeth, refusing to let the words get to him. “Maybe I am. But I’m still standing. I’m still fighting.”
The doppelgänger lunged, its blade flashing toward Arthur’s heart. Arthur parried the blow, their swords clashing with a deafening ring. The force of the impact sent shockwaves through his arm, but he held firm.
The fight was brutal and relentless. The doppelgänger was fast, its attacks precise and unyielding. But Arthur fought back with everything he had, refusing to give in to the fear that gnawed at his insides.
As they fought, the doppelgänger continued its verbal assault, its words like poison. “You think you’re a hero, Arthur? You think you can save everyone? You’re just a scared little boy, pretending to be something you’re not.”
Arthur blocked another strike, but the doppelgänger’s words hit harder than any physical blow. He could feel his resolve wavering, doubt creeping in like a shadow.
But then he remembered his friends—Alice, Elfaria, Liam, Seraphina. They believed in him. They had fought by his side, trusted him with their lives. He couldn’t let them down. He wouldn’t.
With a surge of determination, Arthur unleashed a powerful strike, pushing his doppelgänger back. “I’m not perfect. I’m not fearless. But I’m not alone. And that’s what makes me strong.”
The doppelgänger staggered, its expression darkening. “You think that will save you? You’re nothing without your friends. You’ll fall the moment they’re gone.”
Arthur shook his head, his voice steady. “No. I’ve learned that true strength comes from facing your fears, not running from them. And I’m done running.”
With a roar, Arthur channeled all his energy into one final attack. His blade glowed with a brilliant light, cutting through the darkness like a beacon of hope. The doppelgänger tried to block the strike, but it was too late.
Arthur’s sword sliced through the shadowy figure, and with a final, agonized scream, the doppelgänger shattered into a million pieces, dissolving into the void.
For a moment, there was only silence. Then, the world around him began to reform, the mist clearing to reveal the familiar surroundings of the trial arena.
Arthur stood there, breathing heavily, his sword still clutched in his hand. The weight of what he had just faced began to sink in, but with it came a sense of peace. He had confronted his darkest fears and come out the other side stronger for it.
Alice, Elfaria, and the others rushed to his side, relief evident on their faces.
“You did it, Arthur,” Alice said softly, her eyes shining with pride.
Elfaria grinned, though there was a hint of concern in her expression. “I knew you could do it. But don’t ever scare us like that again, okay?”
Liam patted Arthur on the back, his smile wide. “You’re amazing, Arthur. We’re lucky to have you leading us.”
Arthur smiled, though he was still shaken by the experience. “Thanks, everyone. I couldn’t have done it without knowing you were with me.”
As they regrouped, the mist that had surrounded the trial gate began to dissipate completely, revealing a new path forward. They had passed the trial, and though they knew more challenges awaited them, they were ready to face them—together.
Arthur took a deep breath, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. He wasn’t just fighting for himself anymore. He was fighting for his friends, for their future, and for the hope that they could all make it through the trials alive.
And as they set off toward the next challenge, Arthur couldn’t help but feel that they were one step closer to finding the answers they sought—and to finally escaping the nightmare they had been thrust into.
